Games released in 2014 that I played in 2014

Gotta keep track. Will probably be ranked after preference.

List items

  • [PC] Very funny game. Enjoyed the gameplay and the story. Packed with references to old South Park and plenty of new stuff. I've always liked South Park so it's to have a 12 hour (if not more) or so "episode" to play. I even missed some of the side missions. Was fun all the way through.

  • [PC] Great combat with lots of options. Fun to talk to different people about their builds. Fantastic presentation, graphics and music is spot on. Voices are solid, but the Transistor voice over was just kinda annoying in spots. A bit short and fairly easy even with limiters.

Best Soundtrack so far. Darren Korb is a genius.

Strong candidate for Best Looking Game.

  • [iPad] Threes! is great. Simple little addictive game. Play around 15 minutes pretty much every day while listening to an audiobook or podcasts.

  • [PS3 + PC] Still a solid game in a fantastic franchise, but probably my least favorite of the souls games overall. A lot of the changes take a while to get used to and can be a bit frustrating. The boss design is unoriginal and very few bosses are noteworthy. The story made little sense to me and I lost track of it near the end. Played on PlayStation 3 and there are a lot of framerate issues. Final play through time was at 50h 30m and I finished at level 167, which seems really, really high (strength build).

Did a second play through as a magic character. Level 175 at the end. It is really easy to trivialize dying with the change to Life of Ring Protection (repairable ring that nullifies death, but breaks). Magic is kinda boring at first but mixing sorceries and miracles and be quite interesting and some of the later spells are pretty cool. Super easy to get overpowered though.

PC version is better than the PC version of Dark Souls 1, but is still nowhere near a good port. The more I played Dark Souls 2 the more obvious some of the design problems were (reused bosses, boring enemy design, terrible level design). I've put in over 200 hours so I don't hate the game (I guess). Overall it is enjoyable, but a bit lackluster. Hell of a time sink, if nothing else.

  • [PC] Nidhogg is a lot of fun. Simple gameplay makes it easy for everyone to quickly learn. Few elements that I don't like, but overall a great pass and play.

  • [PC] Nemesis is a cool idea, but wears thins after a while. Overall the game gets way too easy and the mission design, story and characters are uninteresting. I enjoyed the first 5 or so hours of running around the open world hunting Uruks, but the game did have a lot else going for it. Solid PC port. Hope to see stuff like the Nemesis system return.

  • [PC] After 90 min:

(Shay - spaceship) This game looks fantastic. The hand draw art is beautiful and the animations are great. The voice acting is really good. Not gotten stuck on a puzzle yet, and some of them have felt a tad child-game-like (the crane mini game especially). The writing seems good so far and have managed to make me laugh on several occasions. The cereal selection was great. Jennifer Hale and Elijah Wood are outstanding.

After finish Shay and playing ~1 hour of Vella:

Lovely shift in the art direction. Great story setup. More solid voice acting and funny writing. Puzzles a bit more challenged, but still really simple.

Doesn't feel buggy or broken, but not fully polished (slight animations errors here and there).

After finishing Act 1: Overall a really solid adventure game. Great art direction with plenty of variety, funny and clever writing, good voice casts. The score is good and well orchestrated.

Looking forward to act 2. Great reveal at the end of act 1 to maintain narrative engagement. Glad to see this game came out the way it did.

  • [PC] Initial thoughts on this:

Seems like a solid game. Call of Duty style arcade shooting isn't very noteworthy. Story, setting and characters seem pretty interesting. AI is pretty dumb. ID Tech 5 runs pretty well on PC, but still has texture pop in issues.

  • [PC] Bought in at Alpha on January 20. (This is probably gonna be a 2014 game, but I guess you never know.)

After playing around an 1½ hour with a friend:

The game runs a lot better than the mod for me. The new loot spawns and added interiors really make a nice difference. Did not see any other players but ran in to some major bugs. Pants disappeared, couldn't die until I threw myself off a barn. Inventory and controls take a while to get used to, but overall a pretty good first impression. Lost of added depth, but still very alpha.

After playing more it's evident that there's not a lot to do other than get some gear and try not to get shot. Game needs more depth and zombies should be more of a threat.

Never really returned to it, despite the many updates.

  • [PC] Comfy little town builder. Not that deep in terms of mechanics but overall it is very enjoyable. Would love to see different time periods, but hey it's one guy making it.

  • [PC] First PC version of FIFA with the new engine. Presentation is top notch, but most FIFA players will skip most of it. Looks and runs really well. Has a few bugs here and there. AI seems improved in some places, and worse in others. I wish career mode had more roleplaying, but I guess that's not what people come to FIFA for.

  • [PC] Fun and fast paced, but too little content for your money. Managed to prestige once and was pretty much done with the game after that. Maps can feel really empty, and the AI is pretty terrible. Burn cards are a nice idea and will probably pop up in other games too.

  • [PC] Not sure whether to count this or not as Xbone version was 2013. Overall it's enjoyable, I guess? My mind kinda turns off when I'm just mowing through the impressive hordes of zombies. Nice amount of combo weapons and they are very imaginative.

  • [PC] Could not really get in to this game. Slow start and the combat didn't seem engaging at all.

  • [PC] Not optimized, boring, bad voice acting, world doesn't feel very organic, buggy, horrible looking during daytime. Plenty of stuff to do, but none of it seems that interesting. Vigilante framework falls apart when you mow down 20 pedestrians chasing after one bad guy, and all that happens is your rating going down.

  • [PC] Only played tutorial. Will have to return to this later.

  • [PS Vita] Will have to return to this later.

  • [PC] - Multiplayer is hectic and can be fun, but can also turn in to quite a mess. Spawns seem to change a lot because of all the movement so I feel like I get shot in the back more than ever.
