The linearity of FFXIII didn't bother me too much. 
 
It was the fucking vague storyline and shitty characters.  I didn't care about a single character in FFXIII.  They were all annoying.  They talked a lot but never truly said anything.

Wow, that Best DLC argument was intense!

Personally, I'd say don't waste time with the PC.  Try to save up enough money during your portable period to make the big shift to Playstatus; it's going to take a LOT of money to get that license. 
 
Once you have the Playstatus license, it isn't as difficult to keep up with trends.   Just don't spend yourself into debt by the time you need to upgrade.

I think a lot of this game feels weird because of the Japanese to English localization.  I think a lot of the references are kind of lame.  I'd like some sort of wink to someone like Ken Levine or Hideo Kojima instead of "Donny Jepp".
