GOTY 2012

Here is my list of the best games I played this year. They are all in order so it does actually mean I like #1 the best and so on. The way I made this list is EXTREMELY subjective of course like any list. Some of these I have only played a bit of them. Some of these I couldn't put down until I saw the credits roll. So I'm just going with my gut on this. So I guess if you actually care about disclaimers and stuff here goes. I actually pick some games I haven't finished above games I actually beat. WHO CARES. I liked those games THAT much.

List items

  • I like all things 2D a little too much I guess. This game plays in 2D. The art is done in a classic Disney-like 2D hand drawn style. THIS is how I thought as a kid playing my SNES and Genesis games would eventually evolve into. You can imagine how bummed out I was seeing games drift into 3D all blocky and ulgy. So consider this game a celebration to the fact that there are still at least one person who wanted to make a game for the ten year old me.

The game is a fun and engaging of course. It doesn't just look good but it plays great. The combat mechanics are classic but with some new twists that reward you for making insane combos that go beyond one thousand hits.

Story isn't complex at all but always kept me going. I did not stop until I finished it. Well worth it. I love this game.

  • I had no problems with the ending. It finished the story and I did not need it all spelled out for me. I was able to piece together what happened at the very end. The game was fun to play and the characters are fun to interact with like in previous games. It was like saying goodbye to an old friend. Not all goodbyes are sad ones.

  • Anyone who likes Anime like Dragon Ball Z or anything like it HAS to play this game. Asuras Wrath is all about the ultimate power fantasy. ITS SO CRAZY. No amount of text can explain the fun I had playing and watching this game.

The visuals are stunning and the epic battles that you have in this game are taken to an extreme that I can only compare it to the clashes in Dragon Ball Z.

Sure there are a bunch of Quick Time Events but I think they work well here. Thinking about Quick Time Events we usually go to games like Shenmue or other games that have you perform kills on normal enemies. The craziest it has gotten is in the God of War series with Kratos just brutally killing Gods and other mythical beings. Yet they seem tame compared to the battles waged by Asura. THATS just how over the top this game gets.

  • Awesome soundtrack and new mechanics added to the classic Double Dragon formula that make this game a blast.

  • A Sonic game in my Top Games list!? YES! Wait don't go!

This game fixed a lot of the problems in Episode 1. Sonic just works better in 2D and this game just shows it.

What makes this 2D Sonic game so good is the fact that they actually created fun mechanics based on having Tails around. Rather than having Tails around as a punching bad, you can summon him to perform two abilities. The first one is the standard flying mechanic found in Sonic 3, only that you don't need a second player. The other one is this brand new super spin move. Sonic and Tails team up to create this huge spinning ball of death. You can't stop unless you hit a wall and go extremely fast. You kill any enemy in your path and open up new areas as well.

Yes, there are still good Sonic games once in a while.

  • Now this game came out of nowhere to me. Has a lot of great mechanics to play around and the fact that it's open world make it even better. The story so far has done a great job and just grabbing me right away. The villain Vaas is very intriguing and his performance is very good.

  • This game is a ton of fun with other people. The new version of the Siren class is great. Getting loot is still satisfying

I want to play some more of it right now. There is only 1 other shooter I wanna play more.

  • BIG BO, French Robot and a crazy story make this one memorable game. The shooting is a bit clunky but there are some great mechanics in this game that really make it fun to play.

Each member in your squad has a meter that reflects how they feel about you: positive or negatively. Performing well in combat and responding well in conversations will boost that meter and same goes for the other way. Some of the story events actually change depending on how full this meter is. Team members can even DIE if you don't have them on your side enough. I can go so far as to say that the changes in story are almost as much as those found in The Walking Dead.

There is also some other RPG elements like power-ups and equipment you can buy for you and your team members.

This was such a fun game to play due to it's interesting mechanics, funny characters and just crazy story.

  • I had never played a Diablo game before. The closest thing I had played was Phantasy Star Online. Playing alone or with friends this game was really fun. Loot is also great. The story for me at least was also very interesting. Clicking a lot can get boring though and the launch issues really bugged me.

  • This is one of the weirdest games I played this year. It is really hard to explain it but just is really fun. You play as one of many animals that are left since humans have been wiped out. So you run around eating and mating to survive. Wacky story but the risk-reward mechanics are rewarding and fun.

  • I loved the first two Max Payne games and am invested in the story of the character. This game just isn't a great follow up to that story. Max just drinks all day long lamenting what happened to his family and sometimes Mona Sax. I thought he'd be over that by now. The story is alright but I expected more from it. The new characters are good enough. The new location is probably the best thing in the lore of the game. Also Max's motivation to complete his mission is great to see.

Playing the game is very standard stuff: shooting, taking cover and going in bullet-time to make cool looking shots.

  • People seem to love this one to the point that it ends up being on their personal game of the year. It is a terrific game that plays with your emotions having you make tough choices all the time.

The thing that holds it back for me is the fact that most of the choices you make don't really have a mayor impact and it really isn't much of a game. It's a straight forward experience that has a lot of great moments.

The game also had a lot of technical issues in my case (PS3 version). These didn't have any mayor impact in the experience overall but they exist.
