Electrocutie's Games of 2017 Thing

Look I didn't play 10 games, let alone 10 games I felt strongly enough about to put on a GOTY list, released in 2017 so 4 of these are games I played a LOT of in 2017 that received major updates in 2017.

List items

  • What a roller coaster of opinions I had with PUBG, From really enjoying it to thinking it was an awful mess. PUBG 1.0 brought me back to really enjoying it, while I still think the shooting is bad and super inconsistent, a lot of the changes and additions from 1.0 improved the game so much.

Miramar is so much more interesting and well designed when compared to Erangel, Vaulting was legit game-changing making me rethink how I looked at every encounter, Weapon rebalance did what I wanted which was make all the guns feel closer to the Mini-14 instead of just nerfing the Mini-14 (cause it was the only gun pre-1.0 that felt amazing)

I don't think PUBG is perfect, but it's come a long way and I can gladly say it's one of my favorite games of the year.

  • I have a love/hate relationship with Destiny 2, it's an improvement in some ways over the original, but so much more a downgrade that it's hard for me to really enjoy it more than just a one day a week game. I turn it on, do my weeklies in about an hour of play and I'm done for another week, for a game that's so much fun to play as Destiny 2, I don't think that's okay.

The lack of an end-game, the lack of meaningful rewards and the lack of fun but challenging activities makes Destiny 2 just not worth playing to me at the moment. Leviathan is the worst raid in all of Destiny and while they made a great raid in Eater of Worlds, the of lack rewards makes running it feel pointless.

I might be coming off like I hate Destiny 2, because I do, but I also love it and would easily recommend the game to most people. There's 40-60 hours of meaningfully fun and exciting gameplay to enjoy, just don't expect much of a reason to play after that.

  • Plains of Eidolon

I've been playing Warframe on and off since it's Closed Beta or whatever it was called, despite all that time (about 40 total gameplay hours) I couldn't find what people saw in it. The gameplay was fun, but so much of the system felt impossible to understand. With my enjoyment of Destiny 2 dying and the Plains of Eidolon update dropping I decided to give the game another go... Let's just say at the time of writing this I currently have 418 hours played according to Steam.

(Note: A lot of these changes came before the Plains update) Changes to systems that I found incredibly complicated or grindy where made simple and much more grind friendly and the new junction system gave me a tangible and trackable progression. With that I had a basic goal set which lead me to understanding the systems and gameplay much better.

While I don't think the monetization is perfect, I still think buying frame and weapon slots suck, it's easily one of the best that isn't Dota out there right now. Everything in the game is directly purchasable, albeit at way too high of a price, and everything is so easily obtained by playing the game. (Btw, outside of 4 I'm still chasing, I've crafted every single frame in the game without spending a penny to buy them)

Also the Story and characters are surprisingly great, I never thought I'd care about them as much as I do :P

  • Year 2 (Velvet Shell, Health, Blood Orchid and White Noise)

I didn't play Siege at launch so I can't be 100% about it, but it really seems like Rainbow Six Siege has had one of the biggest comebacks I've ever seen. I only just picked up the game this year, around the time of Operation Health, and almost immediately fell in love with it. I think it says a lot that I'm not very good at the game, it's rare for me to get kills even rarer to do well, and I still love the game. Just giving call outs to my team mates or even a simple "great job" when they get a kill is enough for me, but I'm a simple girl :P

(If you're interested in getting into the game and you're on PC, I recommend avoiding the Starter Edition.)

  • Patient Zero

Giant Bomb's 2016 Game of the Year, it's pretty good. I missed out on the game last year, but I picked up the game this year and yeah it's pretty good. Being a fan of the series, I was extremely disappointed by Absolution, it missed a lot of what made the series special. Hitman brought back the series' humor and murder exploration, the creativity in the ways you can approach every assassination is just so damn good.

Patient Zero didn't add so much, but it's an excuse to have it on this list.

  • Rise of Iron, The Age of Triumph

Destiny Rise of Iron, The Age of Triumph is better than Destiny 2 in nearly every possible way and it's a lot of the reason Destiny 2 was such a disappointment. The revised Raids gave my group a reason to get together every week and play, doing Vault of Glass, Crota's End, King's Fall and Wrath of the Machine felt rewarding again. On top of all that the improvements that came before with The Dawning, made playing Daybreak Nightfalls and just Heroic Strikes insanely fun and rewarding.

It took Destiny three years to get to a near-perfect state, let's hope it doesn't take Destiny 2 that long.
