Alex, Spain can actually be pretty goddamn good. In addition to gaining twice the happiness, they also get twice the yield from natural wonders. Obviously, how useful this is depending on how lucky you are with your start, but with a decent to good natural wonder nearby, this can translate into some sick food/production/faith. Lake Victoria and Solomon's mines with Spain, for example, will give you 12 food and production respectively, and that's huge. Their conquistadors, however, aren't very good units, since their unique ability, which lets them settle cities, isn't very useful- for me, anyway- since you're probably done with settling cities by the time you unlock them.
Also, please talk about Civ 5 on the podcast more! Very much like you, civ 5 is my "comfort game" which I keep coming back to, and until now, I didn't think there was anyone at Giant Bomb who shared that interest.
@sharkman: In that case, I totally agree with you. I find that over the past few years, AAA games have accounted for fewer and fewer of my favorite games of the year, which is a damn shame,
