2020 is almost over and I think the only 2020 release I played was the C&C remaster.

if it was about his sanity he should have been working on minecraft. he should not have abandoned it.

The sanity part seems to have been about all the people sending him threats and shit when he didn't want to be their computer support.

Not the entire reason, but he clearly didn't feel like keeping on working on a massive project like this when most of the interaction with the gamer crowd can be so draining.

It's not the first time a developer has stepped down because of this, not even this year.

I'll just put this out here: Borderlands, Defiance, MAG, DC Universe Online and Dust 514 did most of what Destiny does on old consoles (or, PS3 specifically, I don't actually know a lot about 360 games) without having the load time issues, poorly implemented clan systems or suggesting you should use a phone app to hear the actual story. The landmass in at least Borderlands and Defiance is probably bigger than any single area in Destiny too. Defiance told it's story in pretty similar ways, but rather than saying "check out the story on bungie.net" it sometimes popped up "press start to see the codex entry on this/listen to this audio log about what happened here", and when it came to the audio logs, it was like in Bioshock or System Shock, where it was possible to move on and do whatever you wanted or needed while listening.

I don't see anything about Destiny that is overly ambitious for the old consoles, or that shows traces of having been scaled back in order to function there (like how the areas in Final Fantasy XIV are split up).

There have been a lot of industry casualties over the last couple of weeks, but what happened to Jenn Frank was easily the most heartbreaking. I know this is selfish, but I kind of hope she makes her way back to games writing, even if it's in a roundabout or part-time fashion.

Yeah, she was fantastic. I'll miss reading her articles and hearing her fucked up childhood stories on Retronauts. :(

I'd say yes, but none of the options apply. I don't play anything for end game content (there is only one game in which I've everreached the level cap, and that was Star Trek Online), but other than that it's pretty much equally divided between the three first points (maybe leaning slightly more towards the single player stuff - but even then it's probably more the random patrol missions rather than the campaign) and stuff like "I'm kinda fascinated by how it turned out", "I like to just explore areas and don't really give a shit about anything else". I'm kinda fine with just doing the patrol mode, running around in the world and not actually taking on any missions, and just look at how the areas are connected.

I played Defiance pretty much the same way, and rather enjoyed that too.

I don't think it's a fantastic game, but it's competent enough to have been worth spending money on just to see what it is.

So, err, they haven't made it easy to see who else in the clan are online when you play? I can only find "nearby players" (a.k.a "GAME") and people in my friendlist playing it.

I don't think I've played any franchise to completion. Quake would probably be the closest one, since I've at least completed Quake 1 and 2, and I think I finished the single player challenge mode in Quake 3 too. I have not played Quake 4 though.

This is one of the best goddamn games, with what is absolutely one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. Holy shit I love this game. I have, regrettably, lost my copy of it, or I would hack together a way to get it working right now. Conversations with big muppety aliens and delightfully shoddy CGI. THIS FUCKING GAME! If I could get my hands on the soundtrack I would probably never stop listening to it.

Oh yes! I fucking love this game. Stephane Picq's music is goddamn amazing, almost better than his Dune stuff, as are all the miniature puppet animations and all that shit. Cryo made some amazing games back in the day.

Here's the intro music for reference, for people who may not have heard this masterpiece:

I know of only a single other person who has even heard of You Are Empty, so I guess that counts. Also the Stalin Subway, I don't think that's gonna be well played amongst GB readers.

Oh, I own a copy of You Are Empty, but it was too buggy on my machine to ever get past the first level.

@fisk0: Thinking about it, Babylon 5 thematically felt very similar to Mass Effect.

Yup, lots of people said it was the best Star Trek game at the time it was released, but it's much closer to B5 in pretty much all ways. Maybe a little DS9, which also was really similar to B5.

I could kinda see Bioware doing a B5 game, though I'm not a huge fan of their writing, but if it was all vetted by J. M. Straczynski before it was put in the game, it could probably turn out alright.

None. I've played every game listed here and besides there is nothing that anyone has done that someone else has not.

Even the worst movies sell more than one ticket.

In the early 80's it probably was possible for a computer game to sell next to no copies. Generally, a computer games selling ten thousand copies back then were considered massive successes.
