This obviously needs to be locked. Ryan’s death isn’t a mystery. There are no open questions for The people who knew Ryan or people who follow the site. If you want to know more, research the site. But this is inappropriate for the site and the people here who actually knew him.

I’m pretty much always going to be on the side of people doing the actual work, here, which is Capcom.

The OP question has a lot to unpack which isn’t being unpacked.

ARE videogames a “medium”? Because calling videogames a “medium”, to me, is incredibly wrong and a huge chunk of the problem. “Games”, in no other context, are considered a “medium” and they are only considered a medium in the case of videogames due to a fault in our construction of language that we refuse to fix.

Not everything to make with a computer and play with a controller should be considered a “game”.

So to answer the OP question, I absolutely think a preoccupation with “cinema” (literally meaning like-a-movie) is bad for GAMES. But I think that many people call things ‘games’ which should more accurately be called something like “interactive media.”

@the_nubster: I’m a bit of a Kojima hater, but some of the stuff you wrote here is pretty compelling and makes me want to rethink some aspects of his games.

@frytup: I feel like I have this argument with everyone whenever Oscar Isaaics is brought up to play Snake, but the idea that a 6’2” wrestler is hiding under beds, in lockers, and climbing through vents is comical and absurd. Snake is a small guy.

I think Oscar is perfect casting.

I find the modern MK fatalities too be boring because they are just too self-indulgent. Once you cut to another camera, it loses the immediacy and transgressive nature of the old fatalities. I’m glad they included brutalities, because that’s what fatalities used to be. I also think they should not doing any “killing” moves until a character is actually dead. That ruins it, for me.

As for not liking them anymore because of the violence... I don’t feel that way. The violence was never really the appeal to begin with.

I kind of just need Assassin’s Creed to quit. I’ve only ever played half of Black Flag, but I’m sick to death of the series. I think the PREMISES are good. I’m just sick of the branding and the overtures to a story.

I wish they would just rebrand the whole thing as a historical adventure series that doesn’t have anything to do with one another, like Final Fantasy and go from there. Didn’t play one? It doesn’t matter.

@oursin_360: I’m honestly not trying to be insulting but I really do stand by that comment. I would imagine that you probably didn’t like ALL of G4’s content. If you are a reasonable person, you probably liked some of it and felt at least some of it was try-hard.

But for someone who saw g4 and thought, “there are some good things on this station”, they have a different perspective than tech tv fans who pretty much liked everything all day. It literally fe;t the same as mtv playing music all day to suddenly mtv playing jersey shore all day.

And then I reme, bet having a conversation with my new girlfriend saying that I used to watch tech tv all the time on television and then going, “oh yeah, I know guys who watch that channel. It’s basically softcore porn or whatever.” And then having to convince her that it wasn’t always that way...

@oursin_360: I don’t know about tech tv fans being snooty, but I think we were all righteously angry. Tech tv was an entire channel. I used to watch it almost constantly. The way mtv was about music, tech tv was about technology, and it was the only place to get that. G4 bought tech tv and even made the staff move to the new location right before it fired everyone who wasn’t “hot”. Then they gave all the women Fox News-like makeovers and made them “eye candy”. It was gross. The screensavers became tech tv and suddenly Olivia muni is licking controllers or whatever.

It went from being a show for everyone about smart things to being a channel for the dumbest people they could find.
