@ian_williams: That's pretty much right with the trend in fantasy. Once they put 1/2 pt units in which translated to have 200-300+ model armies which translated to a $400-500 investment before any hobby supplies.

GW literally couldn't afford to redo all of fantasy again with that game dying and after they overreached with the Lord of the Rings line.

6th ed was really good with the exception of some of the leadership/fear rules and some lapping things!

I'm real ready to do a deep dive on this.

@l1ama: Bolt thrower is my fav metal band whose name is take from warhammer mini

@barrabas:@austin_walkerit is a giant. I think 5/6th edition period before it became a plastic kit

Games Workshop has always been a black hole when it came to marketing and licensing their products. They have a self published glossy magazine that never mentioned any of their licensed products.

The reason for the shift that Ian astutely touches on is the long decline in sales of both warhammer products. Part of the reason for the ending of the Warhammer universe was that sales for that game were cratering. The Age of Sigmar is much more of a casual skirmish game which have really become en vogue within the tabletop community.

Enjoyed the tabletop talk. I think the fundamental split between players is wether you think game systems exist in service of telling stories. There are plenty of people who want to play games with minimal storytellung and much prefer challenging puzzles and encounters. If you want to be snarky this is called "role play" vs. "roll play".

I definitely tend towards the former and it seems to be the way Austin and GB in general go. I will say storytelling systems with looser rules interpretations are best for podcasts.

Good book to dip your toe into the 40k universe is Dan Abbnet's Brotherhood of the Snake. It's a fun, low stakes, standalone space marine novel. It gives you good warhammer flavor without getting bogged down in deep lore or series building.

I want them to continue this for the Playdates!

Question to 40K fans.

I am extremely interested in getting into the 40K universe, but have absolutely no interest in the tabletop game. I adore the setting and everything I hear said about the universe, are the Eisenhorn books a good intro to the universe? As in do they do a good job of explaining stuff or do they assume you know the universe well already? What is a good starting point to getting into this stuff? Horus Heresy?

I already have read a lot of random stuff on the wiki about 40K because that a thing I do about basically everything.

There is a hundreds of books and every series is a good introduction in to the universe, There's all sorts of types of stories though. Eisenhorn is more of a 40K hard boiled noir/detective story I believe, there's Ultramarines, SpaceWolves and other books about chapters if you want to learn about their back story and ways. There's also books about the imperial Army, the regular folks fighting the good fight and assisting the power stronger armies and chapters. Gaunt Ghosts seems to be a good one I hear.

And then there the Horus Heresy series which takes place 10.000 years before the 40K universe and follows Horus's betrayal of his chapter and becoming the tyrant he became.

Some book series are about 12 books long so beware, It's best to see what you want to read about from the universe and look for those books. The Black Library has a massive collection of Warhammer books.

Look for books by Dan Abnet, he's one of the best sci fi writers out there.

Also if you're interested about the lore and not the tabletop games, I highly suggest getting a bunch of 40K video games as well. All of the Dawn of War games as well as the THQ Space Marine game are fantastic. And there's the new Gothic Armada space fleet game which seems really great so far.

So I asked a family member who works for the PGA about chasing the snowman. Chasing the snowman is bad!

Specifically it is when you get an 8 on a hole that would normally take four or 5 strokes. There isn't much else to the saying other than an 8 looks like a snowman.
