I know exactly what Jess is talking about when it comes to spicy food. I have no tolerance whatsoever for it, either. I've only had Chipotle twice in my life, because the meat is too spicy for me. People I know find that insane.

I live near where Rorie mentioned he traversed sewers to get to a library (which I now also vaguely recall him mentioning that he lived here on some random UPF, years ago). I wonder what library it was... that's hilarious, lol.

Never heard of the term grey soda, but I used to mix all the shit at a soda fountain together all the time as a kid. It's great.

Did Jeff G really acknowledge a couple of corrections?? This ain't the Beastcast.

So the eShop technically closes much earlier - after May 23 2022, you won't be able to add funds to your account, and August for prepaid cards. Meaning the eShop will be functionally dead (in terms of buying games) after May for anyone who doesn't already have funds on their account.

Talking about Kirby copying Mario Odyssey: but it's absolutely the other way around. Kirby was sucking up dudes to take their powers long before Mario ever threw a hat at them. The hat is basically a slightly different style of Kirby powers. Mouthful Mode is an extension of Kirby's already existing powers.

Nice to hear some more positive things about Cyberpunk 2077. (Danny had some last year, I remember.) Got tired of all the crapping on it. I'm still looking forward to trying that game out some day... when I can get a new video card, which will be in 5 years at this rate.

I can never think about ghosts without thinking about Vinny's "ghosts are aliens" idea.

I know I'm commenting 7 years and change later, but I recently have been playing Dragon Age Inquisition for the first time, and what the fuck they chose Iron Bull?! That's an insane choice. He's literally the worst character out of all the possible choices from that game. He's just a boring mercenary. He's even worse than the Tiny Tina knockoff, Sera. And it absolutely sounds like Freddie Prinze Jr.; saying it doesn't is straight nonsense. He actually did a decent job as Vega in ME3, because it was natural. But Iron Bull very clearly sounds like Freddie forcing a terrible accent.

I know 2014 was a somewhat dire year in terms of games in retrospect, but honestly, I don't think anyone from DAI really deserves a nomination. The first two games had far stronger characters.

Can't believe they ended up talking about a corn zone but no one made a cornhole joke. Was perfect for it.

To me, Dying Light (the first one) was first and foremost a co-op game - had a lot of fun parkouring and grappling around the city while bashing in zombie heads with a friend. But it wouldn't have been nearly worthwhile playing alone. (Although, side note, it did have a couple of frustrating missions that forced you to play alone for no good reason. Those missions were dumb as hell and really ground the fun to a halt IMO.) I get that Jeff G simply doesn't play games that way, and I'm sure there are people in the audience that appreciate hearing whether or not these types of games are worth playing solo. I do see the value in that perspective. But it's weird to not even address the co-op part of the game other than saying "the game has co-op too." Because I think it's what the game is intended to be. Just seems like a blindspot they have.

Ah yes, Detroit, famous for... not being a city? What? That made no sense.

Oh god, the intro song managed to be even worse than the version that played on the GOTY casts, which was already bad. The progress is working in the wrong direction. I know Jeff G and Vektroid are friends, so he's definitely blind to this, but come on, man. The music is straight fucking garbage.

Speaking of mixing powdered things in unintended liquids - my grandfather makes Ovaltine in coffee. It's really bad.

I do not understand skipping cutscenes. Why are you playing a game if you don't care about it so much that you can't even care to watch a cutscene? I only play (or keep playing) games I actually care at least a little about. (Obviously this does not apply to people reviewing games, but 99% of the audience of this podcast are not doing that.)

Bakalar calling Ahh Real Monsters "later era" Nickelodeon is hilarious. Real ok boomer energy

The "Should be on Switch" category lasted way longer than it should have. Did not warrant that much discussion... especially considering the winner is literally already coming to Switch, as they even pointed out themselves.

If Jan hates random battles, then how the hell does he still like Pokémon? That's every game until like 3-4 years ago. He hates one of the core mechanics of the series? lol

Only 3 days this year? I guess they at least cut out (some of) the chaff.

Can always count on Jeff G to be the sole person against whatever the indie darling of the year is - this time, Inscryption.

I think a reason why Jan's speech for Guardians of the Galaxy rang hollow was due to the fact that he was solely talking about the story. It really highlighted how GB didn't do a Best Story category this year. The GOTY category should not only be about story, and that argument belonged in a Best Story category.

Jeff G's passion about Halo Infinite felt a bit disingenuous because, as Jess pointed out, it was not that long ago that both Jeffs were saying how "no one cares about the Halo story" on the Bombcast. (Granted, Bakalar was the one who said that quote, but Gerstmann agreed with him. Danny was the one who had to say that's not true.) And here he is now, saying he cares about it? And even saying he was disappointed that story threads from 4 and 5 were finished off-screen? He was saying almost the exact opposite not that long ago. Felt like he picked a horse to back because he really didn't want Psychonauts 2 up there. And I don't even care about Psychonauts - I'd probably put Halo above it myself.

Chicory being at 1 just feels like they gave up and wanted it to be over. They usually do that with the middle of the list, not the #1 spot...

Yeah, the new intro is horrendously awful. Guess I'm skipping forward through that from now on. Not only is the prospect of having to hear that from now on not good, but we also miss out on the jazzy GOTY version they normally play. Although I just went back and checked, we also didn't get the jazz version last year, either. Lame. It's funny, though: most people comment on the "random noise" at the end, but I actually think that's the best-sounding part of it. It's the only part that sounds like it could be an actual song, and not like a dying Speak & Spell. But I want to stress that calling it the best part is far from a compliment - it's still awful.

Holy shit, I didn't realize that three of them literally have J O initials until Jan mentioned it. That's insane. "E is big with eye exams" was a legitimately good joke. I guess even Bakalar can hit one once in a blue moon.

I'll agree that Deathloop's time loop mechanics end up being lackluster, but arguing that it's somehow not a time loop game is simply wrong. Bit surprising that everyone else said they more or less liked it that way though - this is the only GOTY podcast I've listened to where that's the case. Pretty much everyone else thinks it's disappointing that there's only one critical path. Although in Jeff G's case it sounds like he likes it that way because it means he doesn't have to actually think while playing it, lol.

Also, I don't get why they kept saying Loop Hero is not a time loop game - the first sentence of its synopsis on Steam says "The Lich has thrown the world into a timeless loop." Timeless still involves time.

I happened to rewatch School of Rock for the first time in like 15+ years a few months ago, and I still like it, but it's actually kind of fucked up if you put it under any kind of scrutiny. Jack Black's character impersonates someone and ruins at least one semester of those children's education, and gets zero punishment for it. Also he's kind of a selfish jerk who only happened to instill a few decent lessons into the kids by complete chance.
