Where does Bad Company 2 fit in your "Best of 2010" list?

People who love Bad Company 2love Bad Company 2.

So when I was sorting through my irrelevant "Best of 2010" list, I had to contemplate where I would place it. I haven't reviewed Bad Company 2 on Giant Bomb mostly because I have been so busy playing it, so I have a lot of opinions about the game.

Singleplayer

There has never been a singleplayer in any of the previous Battlefield games, so DICE took quite a risk with the original Bad Company. If they had stumbled and failed miserably, I would have been fine saying "Those guys should never try to make a singleplayer game again. Stick to multiplayer". However, the original Bad Company had such a creative story with great characters and writing that is set the bar pretty high for Bad Company 2

The early marketing for the game made it clear that DICE was moving away from what the original Bad Company was in favor of a more "serious" game. But considering how humor was the strong point of the BC1 campaign, and after playing BC2 through a couple of times, I can say that moving away from the original Bad Company was a terrible mistake.

The humor that lightened the first game and that was always present in cut-scenes now had to be discovered by setting your controller down for a few minutes. The wide-open levels and player-choice from BC1 were swapped out with linear levels and scripting a la COD. The story from the first game was never even acknowledged to have existed.

I spoke to the lead-writer for Bad Company 2 (different than the one from BC1), and asked him why there was such a shift in tone between the two games. Unfortunately, he said he "couldn't go into it"

Is this the type of game someone can consider to be their "Game of the Year"?

Yes.

I have spent... *checks 360*... 216 hours playing Bad Company 2 online. Yes, I have a lot of free-time resulting from a relaxed highschool workload... and let's face it, I'm not getting panda every weekend. Anyways...

Despite having some very linear maps with annoying choke-points, the Bad Company 2 multiplayer experience is the best I have ever had on a console. (I still value BF2 as the "true Battlefield game")

Tight infantry combat, something the Battlefield series was never known for, was coupled with refined vehicle combat and large maps. The Rush gamemode that was originally introduced with BC1, is one of the best gamemodes in a multiplayer shooter ever. The way the balance can shift as the combat takes place in different environments is amazing, and I hope Rush is something that is elaborated on in future Battlefield games.

The unlockables are great, and while not as varied or as deep as in Call of Duty, still offer a great incentive to keep on playing without unbalancing things too much. Again, I hope this is expanded on in Battlefield 3.

Okay, so let's take a look at how the game has been supported.

VIP Maps: Disappointing. The game should have been sold with all of the modes unlocked for all of the maps (although even to this day there are modes that are not playable on certain maps). It was nice to have new maps, like with Map Pack 7, but the majority of previous VIP maps were pretty underwhelming.

The summer was a time when a lot of my friends stopped playing Battlefield, instead opting to play Starcraft 2 or Halo: Reach; the support was not there when it was needed most.

However, just this month, VIP Map Pack 7 was released, featuring two BC1 maps remade, as well as two ported maps from the BC2 singleplayer. Those maps were great, providing so much content for the price of: free!

While it would have been nice to have those maps during the start of the summer, at least they got to the community eventually.

Finally, Vietnam! I am stuck in Canada at the moment, away from my Xbox, so I have been unable to play Vietnam. However, Screened.com's Matthew Rorie has given his opinion on the expansion here

Overall, I feel pretty good calling Bad Company 2 my overall Game of the Year for 2010 (full list). What about you?

I wish the single player had continued where the first left off. They just took that awesome contemporary Kelly's Heroes feel and then acted like it never happened, despite The Legionnaire surviving and totally making it seem as if he would be there in the sequel. And then the game went way too far away from the original's mostly lighthearted and fun tone. Wasn't expecting/wanting that shift. There are plenty of ultra serious war games out there. I was hoping Bad Company would continue to buck that trend. Oh well, I played the multiplayer beta and loved it, but didn't play it when I rented (no gold, see). So my only real opinion is on the single player, which I just didn't like that much at all.

Probably won't be on my list. Really want to play Vietnam though.

@Ben Yeah, I really wish they had continued the story, as they left it at such a cliff-hanger ending.

5th. Awesome single player. Awesome multiplayer.

Multiplayer then gradually ruined for me by pricks boosting their stats.

That's why it's 5th.

I really don't know what to do with Black Ops and BFBC2. If I were to play only one console shooter, I would go with MW2/Black Ops but I've had more fun this year with BFBC2. At the moment I have BFBC2 at #4 and Black Ops at #6 (I really don't want to move it past P.B. Winterbottom). I also have the same problem with my #1 (FFXIII >_>) and my #2 (Pac-Man C.E. DX). If I hadn't played Pac-Man C.E. it would be my current favorite game this year.

#8 on my list. Second shooter behind Halo: Reach. I really loved the game, probably my favourite multiplayer shooter this year, but I wasn't crazy about the campaign and got bored with the maps for whatever reason. Wish there had been a real map pack earlier this year. Though apparently Vietnam is pretty good so I might have to check that out.

Good question!  I bought it for the campaign, didn't like that much at all, then decided to give MP a go and ended up sinking about 50 hours into it (not much by some standards perhaps, but I doubt I've spent more than 5 hours on any competitive MP since Battlefield 2).  It's a contender for a 5-10 spot.

Not on my list, because it was not fun enough for me but within a week of it's I already had all the unlocks, most of the achievements, at least 25 hours played and the maps and gameplay just started to bore me. Not to mention half the time you either get a crappy team or crappy connection that just made me mad. Also the whole VIP thing pissed me off because I had used the code on my father's XBL account while on my console and if it was any other DLC or game it would have worked under my XBL account as the downloads are registered to both the Gamertag and the console, but it did not work. So I was stuck playing the same couple of maps because my VIP status was not registered and instead of making all the maps playable on the different modes they decided to hold them off and make them "free" DLC. Overall I would probably put it around 15th-18th of the games I played this year.

Edit: I did love the SP and all the random crap that they came up with while standing around.

It's 4th, after WoW, SSFIV and P3P. I think SSFIV, P3P and BC2 are pretty much equal though. Definately best multiplayer shooter this year. I couldn't get into it on 360 but when I played on PC it just clicked. The multiplayer combat is intense, while remaining strategical and skill based. The maps are in my opinion pretty much perfect. The only thing that detracts from it is the amount of CoD kids who used to play rushdown snipers in it, but that's a thing of the past and nothing the developers could do anything about.

Damn, we once had a full squad of irl bros running around (2 medics, 1 assault, 1 engineer) and we wrecked SHIT, the game really promotes teamwork and communication like that.

Somewhere near the bottom, sure I had plenty of multiplayer fun with it but when a game has a single player that lacklustre I just cant convince myself to put it any higher.

It was first for me since this is the first fps game that I really played multiplayer for. (Actually BC1 was the first, which was earlier in the year, but it wasn't released this year so... yeah)

It's hard to describe why I like it so much; the large maps, destruction 2.0, team based objective play. Probably all of them are good reasons for this game being at the top position for me. Like I said before, this is coming from someone who is not too great at fps games (I think my both my k/d & w/l ratio is only 0.77 or so) and really who only plays fps for their single player campaigns.

I think it's safe to say that Battlefield BC 2 is a game I'll be playing for the better part of 2011 as well, especially with Vietnam out now... Hopefully BC3 is announced soon, since I would like to see where the story goes.

See you guys online sometime.

Its 6th out of 8 on my list. The reason for that is the way the changed the characters and story. Now BC1 wasn't the greatest thing ever in the story or campaign department but it was fun and funny at times BC2 is just flat with a typical super weapon/super villain story. I was surprised given the ending of BC1 that they didn't bring back the legionnaire for more gold stealing action, I mean the last shot of BC1 just sets it up. I might be a little bit harsh on the game since I love the multi player a lot but the single player cant be ignored when looking at this game and it drags the quality of it down for me anyway. This is what I wrote on my list for the games single player " A disappointing single player that totally changed the guys of Bad Company from likable buffoons to half-assed Modern Warfare clones spouting bullshit military jargon".

The multi-player is great though I played a serious amount of it and still like to go back and play given the free map pack that was just released. I would put the multi player put there with some of my favorite ever but when the game is called Bad Company 2 I want a decent campaign with the guys from Bad Company.

I played through both Bad Company games this year. I found the first one to be charming, but I can't remember a single fucking thing about BC2's campaign.

MP was a blast for a while. But I got tired of it fairly quick. It might make my top 10 only because it was a pretty lean year overall. Would definitely put it behind Black Ops though.

#1 on my list. I have to agree with you that it strays a bit from the 'Battlefield experience' that Battlefield 2 offered, which was already less impressive in scale than 1942. However, BC2 still manages to give the 'combined arms' feeling that the Battlefield series is known for. Also, I love the tactical possibilities the destructible environment offers (and it looks awesome, too).

I've only played it for a couple minutes, so it's not going to make my top 10 list just yet. I will say that I enjoyed what I played, and in many ways, the game seemed more impressive than Call of Duty. It's definitely a game I need to play more.

Third, would have been more satisfied had they not completely disregarded the first game's story and made the single player much more linear.
