Games of my childhood

Growing up, I played a lot of games that were both good, bad and sometimes a little in-between. It was mainly PC stuff, usually stuff that was pirated and brought home on a CD-ROM from some shady guy who worked at my dad's store. It was still in those days when piracy was limited to some guy you knew who knew another guy.

On those CD-ROM's was usually a game, some programs, a couple of trailers for games as well. I saw that original 1997 (was that it?) Duke Nukem Forever trailer where he's chugging sodas in Vegas and using a riot shield. I remember some of the games were kinda shitty like Three Golden Skulls of the Toltecs, which was some SCUMMVM game, and Daikatana. But a lot of these games left a huge impression on me.

It's all PC stuff here. I didn't have a console growing up (PC only) and I had my own computer, usually made up of parts that had come out of my dad's computer; he'd upgrade and I'd get the hand-me-downs.

  • I can barely remember playing this - I know that I did - but I do remember the bright colourful graphics and the sense of adventure. I think that SENSE of adventure is really hard to bring across now. I don't know what it is but the idea of an immense quest or a large world just seems harder to convey now. Hype really got me excited as a kid because I felt like I was really on an epic quest, with large stakes. It fell into a similar camp as Drakan, where I had a feeling that I was in a large, unfamiliar world and that I was holding it all together

  • The sound of the railgun. The noise Bitterman makes as he jumps. The pump of the shotgun. COM-PU-TAR UPDATED. The armor shards clink. Those and so many more of those noises are just inside my head, burnt in. Quake 2 was a game I never actually played as a kid but one that I watched my dad play over his shoulder. I'd sit next to him and watch him play and I'd have a go if he died or whatever. I eventually took to playing it as well and fell in love with the fast gameplay - shooters of that time period felt fast, violent, frenetic. I don't know why we can't get that today. I get told games are fast, or that "X games is similar to Quake/DOOM" but it never FEELS like that, you know? Maybe it was the simplicity of the levels, maybe it's nostalgia but I think Quake II stands as a sort of pinnacle of fast shoot'em'ups. I loved Quake II as a kid, still do today.

  • I actually never played this online - I didn't know how. I never asked my Dad to show me how and maybe I should have. I was literally just playing against bots all the time, usually on Facing Worlds. I really liked the maps with the objectives - the ones where you had to plant bombs or run through a trench. As a kid, I'd go into these levels to figure out what they'd be like to play on as a team - the level I liked the most was the beach assault level. The side-effect of playing against bots was I only ever did one thing: I'd sit at the top of the tower on Facing Worlds, sniping people the entire game. This lead into my Quake III days as an eleven-year-old, when for a brief time I was actually good with a railgun.
