I bought a 60GB PS3 a few years ago to replace/upgrade my PS2 in my entertainment center since it was backwards compatible. It worked well when I played PS2 games or downloaded market games, but once I started playing Metal Gear Solid 4 it locked up after about an hour. Basically the screen just gets a slight bit of static-ness to it, and everything freezes. I have to do a hard reset, and it'll usually go back to the menu and then freeze after a couple minutes. I think it's probably a fan problem causing it to overheat and crash since it is super quiet playing anything (My friend informed me that his 60GB PS3 is MUCH louder). That and when I shut it off for a few hours I can usually start it up and play the game for about another 45 minutes before the same thing happens. I've gone through so many resets of versions and phone calls with Sony customer service that I give up trying to solve any problems on my own.
Our Futureshop (Best Buy) store in town apparently does a diagnostic for 60 dollars, and then subtracts that 60 dollars from the total repair cost if they found out it can be fixed. I'm guessing the cost for a repair will probably be anywhere from 150 to 200 dollars, if not more. The new 320 GB slim bundle runs at 299.99 with Infamous 2 and Modern Warfare 3 (although I'd probably immediately trade both in for credit towards Uncharted 1/2/3).
So here are my questions:
Does anyone think the 60 dollar payment is worth attempting to get an old system fixed, to potentially receive another refurbished console in return for ~100 dollars less than the new console?
I still have my PS2 sitting around if I ever choose to play the PS2 games again, so would the upgrade to the 320 GB Slim from the 60 GB be significant enough to lose the backwards compatibility? I'd prefer the backwards compatible PS3 to my PS2...but if the new version is significantly better... is it worth it?!
I hope someone can help me... I'm quite divided (always been more of a 360 guy so I don't know much about PS3s or their hardware upgrades from version to version). Thanks a lot! I tried to be as complete as possible in my situation.
