Playing FF7 Rebirth is giving me the Bad Thought of replaying other FF games.

My Favorite Video Game Music of 2014

As I attempt to plow through a few final games before scrambling together a top 10 list, I’ve also been thinking about the year in video game music. I won’t say that 2014 has been one of the better years for video game music (just like it hasn’t been one of the better years for the games themselves), but I still played plenty of games with excellent soundtracks. In fact, some of these soundtracks join my all-time favorites, and all of them did a lot to enhance their respective games. Video game music can be a powerful thing when used well, and props to these 10 games for doing it better than any other I played in 2014.

One minor aside before I start. Every year I’ve debated whether I want to consider licensed and/or remixed music for this list, and this year I’ve finally settled on being all inclusive. If a game has great music and uses it well, then it’s eligible, plain and simple. Every year there’s at least one game that uses pre-existing music to great effect, and I’m going to give those games some well deserved recognition too.

Finally, games are ordered by release date, not by preference.

Wolfenstein had my favorite soundtrack this year. The music has nasty, gritty atmosphere and reminds me of Neurosis, Cult of Luna etc.

Also, the in-game collectable Nazi polka renditions of classic radio hits were very well done. House of the Rising Sun sticks out for me.

@beghead: I also really liked the music in Wolfenstein! I especially liked some of the really gritty, dirty tracks like Prototype. That was one of the games that was right on the edge of this list!

I had forgotten how beautiful the music in Child of Light was. I remember one of the battle themes sounding a little bit like that piece from Requiem for a dream that was everywhere at one point.

Oh man, those Mega Man 2 tracks from SSB are amazing.

The music I have enjoyed a lot this year came from Velocity 2X. I could leave it on the title screen playing Flight Computer forever, and most definitely Wolfenstein. If Id don't use the same composer for the new Doom they will have made a huge mistake.

I really liked Kill Everyone, Ransacked and the title screen music in that game, especially the version of it that plays over the last mission. Prototype is pretty much the best musical representation of an Evil Nazi mech ever recorded.

I also think Lara's theme in that new Temple of Osiris game is the best Tomb Raider theme since the one in Angel of Darkness.

Mitch I had a meaningful comment, but I accidentally deleted it and I don't remember what I said...

In any event this blog post is awesome and fun!

Mega Man music really is timeless.
