The game that got me into video games and still one of the deepest, most cinematic, and most memorable role-playing games ever made. Yes, I know it's a generic pick for a favorite list, but there is a reason why so many people cherish this game. It's an outstanding achievement and my favorite video game of all-time.
It took me about 2 minutes (the length of one run in career mode) to become hooked on what will always be my favorite Tony Hawk game. To me, this was the perfect balance between realism and arcade gameplay, with the controls on PS2 feeling as natural as can be.
My favorite fighting game of all-time, and quite possibly the most frantic game I've played in the genre. I love the crazy combos, ridiculous amount of characters, and the attention to detail that comes through in every sprite.
Another common pick for a list like this, but much like FF7 it's cherished for a reason. Looking back it's hard to believe that a game like came out so soon the life cycle for 3D games. The gameplay, graphics, story, just everything came together in the best way possible. This is a masterpiece of gaming.
The current standard for JRPG's, Persona 4 is an epic adventure that Giant Bomb users know well. I remember buying it right when it was first released in the U.S. and letting it consume my life for a good couple of months. Amazing experience, and it goes without saying that it is one of my favorite games of all-time.
It's really a shame that this classic is so hard to get a hold of. Few games can match the humor and charm of EarthBound, and few RPG's are as fun as this one.
I'm usually not a fan of shooters, but the Unreal series has always been a favorite of mine. UT 2004 has everything that I like about the genre- fast paced action, tons of customization, seemingly endless modes and maps due its strong mod community, and addictive gameplay that is easy to pick up and play but not devoid of strategy.
My first SMT game and the second to make this list, Nocturne is a brutally difficult RPG that absolutely blew my mind when I first got my hands on it back in 2004. The dark occult-themed story drew me in, but the narrative is one of only many brilliant aspects of Nocturne. There is a truly unique and polished game underneath the atmosphere, and it's hard to go back to traditional JRPG's after experiencing what the genre of capable of.
Super Metroid changed the way I thought about gaming. While I always enjoyed playing games as a kid, I remember playing Super Metroid at a friend's house and being blown away by the amount of freedom and exploration. I truly felt like I was interacting, not just trying to beat a challenge. Of course, there are plenty of other reasons why Super Metroid is remembered as a classic, but that one side of the game helped me really get into gaming as a hobby.
