I think you're right. I played some very good freeware games that deserve to be here. For example, Notrium is a pretty good freeware game with some interesting gameplay. Those games totally need a place on this website.

Now, some Flash games are exceptional too. Flash is just another platform to build the game upon you know. The problem with Flash games is that people only see them as some 5 minutes distractions when you are bored out of your mind on the Internet (and they're not totally wrong about this either).

Some old and new commercial games also went freeware. I'm thinking: Beneath a Steel Sky, Dink Smallwood and GTA 1 & 2 for the older games and the F.E.A.R. Combat multiplayer game for the newer ones. There is a rather long list about the subject on Wikipedia.

You can add it by going into the Release page for the game and click on "Add to my collection" if there is a release for the game.

If not you can't add the game unless you create a Release for it beforehand.

I submitted a new game entry for the arcade game Varth but I did a pretty dumb mistake in naming the game... >_<

The real name should be Varth: Operation "Thunderstorm" but I submitted it as "Varth: Operation Thunderbolt".

It would be very much appreciated if a mod could change the name. :-/

I don't think this is a controversy or a scandal but it absolutely is a sensitive matter. I have a hard time comprehending how any of you people can compare this to hamburgers...

There's a long history between the two nations involved. Something like this could be small to contextually impaired individuals but to the people that is relates to, it can be of a much bigger importance.

The fact of the matter here is that the man is right.

This is a picture of the Serbian Parliament in Belgrade and it is in the Bosnia page. See for yourselves.

He even supplied a better picture...

Yeah! I replayed Castlevania: Symphony of the Night recently and all the time I was thinking about how awesome it would be to have a new Metroid game on a home console with detailed 2D graphics and perhaps some nice 3D particle effects. I think there is a way of mixing both old and new technologies to make some very good retro-modern games.

I think you did the right thing by sending the question in but I don't think it is acceptable to have to wait two days to get an answer on this.

Someone from the staff needs to come out and say "No to freeware games on GB." or "Yes to freeware games on GB." and settle things straight...

I think the main problem is that there are too many submissions being made. They had over 20000 subs to approve so their main priority is now to reduced that number to an acceptable level and that reduces the quality of the content on the website.

I think that if things continue going on at this pace, they're gonna have to limit submissions to a certain number per day/week/month. Maybe something like 5000 submissions max for a week and just display a message like this when the limit is reached:

"Hey! Sorry but we have reached our submission limit for today. This is to make sure that we keep a consistent submission approval quality. Please write down the idea you had somewhere and come back tomorrow!"
Because I think the system wasn't built to have so many different mods approve stuff at the same time. I mean one mod could be approving a "Hot Dog" page just when another one is approving the "Hotdog" page and stuff like this happens...

I had made a submission for a character for the freeware game 5 Days a Stranger and it got rejected on the basis that freeware games are not added to the database.

Here's the message left by the moderator:

This character is from a freeware game which are not being added to the database. Thanks anyway!
The message left here could mean two thing actually. Either that freeware games are not added to the database or freeware game characters are not added to the database. My problem is that the game is already in there and it was there when the site launched.

So what is the stance of Giant Bomb about freeware games and their place on the website?

Like BinaryDragon said, the Chzo Mythos by Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw (of Zero Punctuation fame) are very, very good.

They are mostly adventure, survival-horror point-and-click games but the story and the characters are extremely engaging. The gameplay is nostalgic and pretty solid and the script is really good. The graphics and animations are also very old school but the game has such a professional vibe to it. I think that if this game was release some 10 or 20 years ago, it would have been an adventure game classic.

You should at least check out the first in the series:
5 Days a Stranger

--

Anyway back to the subject, by the time I was consciously into gaming I think point-and-click games were already dying. I played through Maniac Mansion just recently and loved it. I also player some Monkey Island as a kid but I never really got more into the genre at the time. The Croshaw games really brought me back into it though. When I was a kid I would play any game that would come as a demo with a magazine. So I played the demos for:

  • Grim Fandango
  • Blade Runner
  • Men In Black: The Game (a pretty bad adventure game based on the first movie)
  • Broken Sword II (which I only knew by its French title: Les Chevalier de Baphomet: les Boucliers de Quetzalcoatl back then)
  • Sanitarium (a crazy game where you started in a mad house with no memories)
  • ...so many other random adventure games I played but don't remember the details of.

I never really had the chance as a kid to get the full version and play them so I pretty much played those same demos over and over. I should get a move on and play those games now that I'm an adult but life ain't all about games like it used to be when we were kids. :-/

There used to be this maddeningly-hardgame about you being a detective (or a cop) and having to solve a crime for some lady about her missing sister I think. That was the classic story starter back then. :D

So, I was really into it but I just couldn't get out of my office. There was this dude (my partner I guess) and he wasn't helping much either. The game was mostly black and white and with live-action style characters I think... not sure... wish I could remember the name of that game just for the kicks of it.

There's a pretty good community still maintaining the game to some point. Here are a couple links that will definitively help you get through the game with a bit more elegance:

As for obtaining the game. There are obvious illegal ways to get it but you should probably download a demo and see if you like it and then perhaps go to the next step and hunt for it on eBay or Amazon Sellers listings. The game is still kinda hard to come by these days but it's still not impossible to find.

eBay has a few as of writing this:
