I see nothing wrong with developers choosing whatever race, gender, or ethical background feels the most comfortable. Regardless of our abilities to play in another persons shoes, both race/gender have an effect on the way people live out their lives. It's called culture. A developer should not feel forced to depict a black male/female when a white-protagonist (like the developer) works just as well. The point that there is no difference between having a black/white protagonist both works for the side wishing for more, and against it. If there is no difference, why do we care?
I'm not saying that there is no room for gender/race variety, but lets leave it up to the developers who are becoming more diverse to weed that out. We see a pre-dominant stance on white-male protagonist instead of female simply because that is the majority of what the industry has for developers. Once more females and other ethical backgrounded people show up (more than there is currently) - we will automatically see a larger appeal to a broader audience. Until then, there really is nothing wrong with the industry except that a select few tend to voice their concerns on something that is completely imaginary.
I don't agree with that. Apart from being white and male, the typical video game protagonist has very little in common with the typical developer-slash-game writer.
