@bladededge: You mean the part where she said that the mere presence of sexist/racist choices as a selectable option ruined her sense of escapism? Yes, I heard that. I also heard the part where she said that the character she picked was responsible for their presence, strongly suggesting that she hadn’t gone back and rerolled to give the game another chance, and had, in fact, stopped after the quicklook. I particularly enjoyed the part where Ben took the fact that the game suggested that he might be a fascist as a reason to be more careful about what ideas he was supporting through his choices.

@worlddude: The entirety of these discussions is about how the staff views the quality of these games. She didn’t toss those arguments out there just for the hell of it. I suspect that we’re going to hear more explicit condemnations of the game as a artistic work with those talking points front and center in the next two installments. I’d he happy to be wrong though. I like a lot of what she brings to the site. The Nancy Drew games and the Sims are major franchises that just wouldn’t get covered if she wasn’t here, and I was one of the apparent minority of people who liked Sea Beasts, but she and Dan are the most obstinate people on the site, and when either one of them picks a hobby horse it can turn discussions into a repetitive slog. I’m worried that that this game is one of those slogs. I have a sneaking suspicion that Outer Wilds and Death Stranding will be the other major issues, but I don’t think she’ll be the issue there.

@BladedEdge: Turning off a game after an hour and a half and responding to positive mentions with criticism is, if not “categorical rejection”, within striking distance.

@bladededge: You don’t know what the words “open minded” mean. Please stop using them. Categorically rejecting a work because it doesn’t exclude your personal bugbears from view is what people shit on Christian fundamentalists for. It’s not “open-minded”. It’s reactionary and dogmatic to a degree that even second-wave, radical, sex-negative feminists demonstrated more nuance. “Open-minded” is how society at large describes people who are willing to listen to alternate viewpoints and experiences, even if they themselves disagree with them. Not somebody who shut off a game three minutes in because she saw a woman’s ass.

@raszagal: “I liked River City Girls but it doesn’t hang” - 5 seconds

ETA: The previous format caused half the nominations list to be filled with glorified name drops. I prefer the new format, because I can hear SOMETHING about the game before it gets unceremoniously dismissed.

@relkin: exp. share use to (I think it still does) share EVs too. Those are the easily controlled way of optimizing your stats, so if GameFreak didn’t remove the EV sharing or allow respecs like they used to, that’s basically a huge middle finger to their entire competitive community.

Also, the vitamins Jan was talking about existed in previous games. They added EVs to your pokemon. I heard of a way to change your pokemon’s nature in this game, but it might not unlock until later in the game.

Good job, Jan and Ben.

@brad: I don’t think you spoiled anything other than the game mechanics. You even left Sam’s full name out, and I’m pretty sure that was put out during pre-release. Maybe they’re talking about the Diehardman thing.

@11111110: The Chinese government uses the threat of withholding access to its consumer base to control the behavior of companies outside of its borders. The incident happened on a Blizzard stream, so Blizzard cut ties with the casters and punished Blitzchung to make it clear that anti-Chinese-government behavior won’t be tolerated on their platform to pacify the CCP. Whether it’s legal or not in the broadcasting country is irrelevant to the Chinese government.

@sloppydetective: the crew is referring to the video of what happened. Nobody on the crew speaks mandarin to my knowledge, so if it’s set up they probably wouldn’t know from the video. I suspect that the casters would have been expected to cut away the second Blitzchung showed up with a mask on.
