As far as I'm concerned, the new standard in JRPG (and video game) storytelling. Watch the endurance run videos; should be self-explanatory.
Another great game (with some story-based reservations). Very similar to P4, but more of a niche, hardcore title. The FES chapter is particularly cumbersome. I'd recommend playing P4 first.
Square's best attempt at innovation in some time. This is a decent DS RPG, but a bit overwhelming for a portable title.
Easily my favorite game of this console generation.
This is one of the earliest Xbox DLC packs, but still one of the best ever. 30 hours + and a whole new world of content. This is how to do an expansion.
I didn't play this until after the SNES era, so this one didn't have the lasting classic appeal. However, it's definitely a step forward for the time, and remains a good game 15 years later.
One of the best video game soundtracks ever made. Also, the game had serious replay value, to add to the 40 or so playable characters.
These are more history pieces than anything, for the time, great games, but not much to them now.
The DS remake is the ideal version of this game, but it is a simple, fun RPG.
One of the classic JRPGs, and probably the first "true" modern JRPG, given its deep story elements. Both the original SNES version and DS version are worth playing.
Perhaps the most forgettable in the series, this one was notable for its job/class system.
The quintessential FF title. I loved it as a kid, and it remains my favorite in the series. The gameplay still holds up. In current form, you can only play the GBA version, unless you have the original SNES cart or PS reissue.
In my view, one of the most overrated RPGs of all time. But still not a bad entry. It's important for being polygonal, but I never thought it looked good...
I am one of the few who actually enjoyed this one. Ridiculously long summons aside, I found myself caring more about these characters than those in FFVII
All around, a very good game, but extremely disappointing in that it's the first where being lvl 99 did not max out anything stat-wise.
Many years of development and square falls flat on its face. Terrible storytelling and linear environments held this one back. Excellent graphics and battle system though.
My favorite Tales game; something worked for me here...it may have been the characters.
My first BioWare RPG, outstanding, but buggy as hell. The universe is very well realized.
Not as deep or as good as its predecessor, but all around a good action rpg. Story-wise, it's emotionally blunted.
These games are excellent, despite the odd disney content. Nice to see Squaresoft doing action RPGs
I mostly remember this as a series from the Dreamcast era, but cannot recall much.
This is THE anime RPG for the PS2, it doesn't do anything remarkable gameplay-wise, but the story and scope are incredible, voice acting not too bad either.
Continuation of the XS1 story
Much like SH1, but improved over its predecessor. Highly recommended for its tone and story.
Overlooked RPG gem for the PS2, great story and pacing, also a relatively innovative battle system.
Nice DS remake here, classic game.
My second DQ game (since the original dragon warrior) very good, but forgettable at the end.
The original rpg, the first one I ever played. Probably why I'm so hooked on the grinding. (I was 5)
Outstanding traditional RPG; wonderful characters and development, despite lackluster visuals.
Proof that a Bioware RPG without good character development is not worth playing. There's great loot here, but nothing to do with it. However, trying to develop 6 new chars. in a 12-hour game didn't work one bit.
Not nearly as good as its predecessor
Quests, quests, quests, and more quests. I can't say the writing was great, but it was an open-world Diablo-style game that is almost too big to be fun.
Great dungeon crawler, a good way to get your Diablo on.
This game was a bit of a mess; it's a great universe, but I found it to be cumbersome. The weird censorship of the North American version was also a bit strange.
Generally speaking, this was a disappointment, which is true for all the Fable games IMO
Not bad. Better writing than its predecessor, though buggy as all get out
This was better than I had assumed it would be. Terrible voice acting, but great-looking armor sets and more quest variety than I would have thought.
This one was better than I expected. So many good ideas that were executed so poorly; sad that there will not be a sequel.
So difficult, yet so addicting. This game is certainly a trail by error, but when you're in the "zone" the sense of accomplishment and progression is unlike much else
This one just felt unfinished, from top to bottom. The problem is that the game had wonderful ideas, and the best soundtrack I've heard in years. If you do play it, it should be done several times to get the full story.
