I got a PS4 pro last week and have been playing Horizon Zero Dawn! Even though I'm starting to get sick of open world games, I am thoroughly enjoying it! I think it has a really good quest amount balance, where there's enough quests to feel like you always have something to do, but not so many to feel overwhelming. Same thing for quest objectives and resources for crafting. You don't have to do or collect 15 things, it's more like 2 or 3, which I really appreciate. I'm also really happy with the amount of story and cutscenes, it really breaks up the open world grind, and I really like Aloy as a protagonist. Also I didn't think I'd have so much fun with the photo mode, it's such a great small addition that I've spent much more time in than I thought I'd do!

ME1 had open world elements, and from what I've read about Andromeda, they are trying to continue on that path but better.

I feel like an Inquisition-ish style exploration system could potentially be perfect in Mass effect if done right.

I think one of inquisition main drawbacks was that the exploration is tied to quests. You explored to get new quests, and quests told you to explore. In Mass effect 1 however, the spirit of exploration was right, you explored because you wanted to, and you wanted to gain knowledge of the planets (or at least I did). I think it's because it's optional and if you are invested in the lore, you got a lot out of it, lore wise. If you didn't want to explore though, there was a tight story you could focus on completely. I had a much better time driving around the Mako on empty planets and reading text about planets than exploring in Inquisition.

Have exploration mostly optional like in ME1 but expand the open levels to the detail of Inquisition. Throw in some of Inquisition systems like a war table where you can choose a team to do some side stuff and some occasional setting up bases (but don't overdo it like in Inquisition!). The reward for exploration should be the mystery of the planet or whatever you are exploring, throw some interesting lore at the player for exploring, preferably some obscure sci-fi stuff that wouldn't normally fit in a "mainstream story". Have a tight narrative of main missions in the style of Shepard trilogy that you can focus on solely if the player wants.

I feel like that would be the perfect Mass effect.

Also, in new GI articles Biware have stated that the game has open world elements, and isn't a fully open world. Whether or not that distinction matters only time will tell.

I think with a game of this scope, it will have a much longer development time. This isn't anything new, there are plenty of games (great ones) that had a development time longer than 3 years. The difference is that we've been able to follow it from its conception, whereas most other games you hear that it exists when the majority of time has past in its development. I think it makes the game feel longer to come out than it otherwise would. From what we've seen from demos and behind the scene videos, I think they've come far enough for the game to be legit. From the little I've played of it, the foundation is very solid, and I'm loving how they've build the engine.

Children of men has a some Deus Ex feel, also a bunch of Half life, it doesn't really have any cybernetics, but human biological change is central to the plot. I guess it's mostly tangentially related to Deus Ex, but Children of men is probably my top dystopian future movie, it is really great!

I knew pretty early that No man's sky wasn't for me. I've always preferred tightly designed games as opposed to open games like this (There's only a few open world games that I can play). But I'm glad that people who like these types of games enjoy NMS!

I do find everything around NMS interesting though, the development and hype gone off rails. It's funny because I did the same "imagine ideas that weren't there" with the original Crysis. I imagined Crysis to have this living world, where the aliens were in the background and could strike at anytime and their AI would be like nothing we've seen in the gaming world. The story would be the most complex story written and the game would literally change the gaming world etc. Turns out it was an OK shooter. Although Crytek really did put more fuel on the hype fire, and promised a lot of stuff that they never delivered on. Still, it's actually really interesting to see it happening to NMS from the outside, I can understand how some people expect and imagine stuff that isn't there, I've done it as well.

I see a bunch of no in this thread, so here's a yes! I myself have already started and am currently level 16. I will play through both DLC's for the first time and I'm excited as all hell!

Haven't played Doom yet, but I have a hard time imagining that I would like Doom more than The new order as a whole package to be honest. The things I love about Wolfenstein goes beyond the gameplay, while in Doom the gameplay has center stage. From the looks of it, I'll probably enjoy the shit out of the gameplay in Doom, but there was just more for me to enjoy in Wolfenstein.

I started playing Project reality like half a year ago, found a group within a couple of weeks. I have been playing all kinds of games with them since then, and I pretty much talk with them every day on team-speak. Project reality is a pretty team orientated game, so as a result the group is pretty team orientated which is super cool

You know what I want? A straight forward story. None of this conspiracy "one man controls a rogue group that is doing some bad shit, and this other secret-black-special-forces-ops have to stop this one guy" shit. It's all the same, and it's all stale and boring. It doesn't mean anything and has no impact if I don't care about anything that happens. Get me back to the straight forward stories, about soldiers in war, and what they experienced like CoD 1,2 and 4. You can even through in some commentary, but for the love of god don't throw in some shady organization straight from a conspiracy.

This video brings it up in a good way, it's pretty long though. https://youtu.be/AvN51r1o1Nc
