My Thoughts After E3: Kinect, PS Move, and More

Introduction

So this isn't a majorly thought out blog or anything its more of a spur of the moment thing but after everything that went on at I felt I needed to say something. First off did anyone other than me feel like E3 was a bit of a downer this year? I mean it seemed like everything was aimed more at a casual gamer or every company was just trying to one up the other using the exact same thing. I understand that the whole motion gaming ordeal is the big thing right now but it seems like even putting that aside there was nothing announced for the harcore gamer this year.  Here is my summary of the three conference's and my winner.

Microsoft

So they came out right away and pretty much the whole time was focused on Kinect. Now I think I am the only one who actually thinks that in the future this might have some serious potential. Everyone is counting it out right away because they think that the release day games aren't very intuitive or anything special. I don't understand what people want. The 360 release games weren't special but look at the console now, they have some great exclusives. I thought Dance Central and Kinect Adventures were cool and Forza showed a lot of potential for what racing games could be with a little bit of tweaking. Also the Gears 3 demo was sweet.

Nintendo

I really don't have much to say about this conference. It was my least favorite of the three. The reason why: Nothing new. You're saying, "Hell yeah there was. Look at all the new Mario and Zelda and DK games and....oh I see." Yeah....same old characters from a company who can't come up with a single new IP. I mean yeah those characters are great but they have relied on them for over 15 years. I love Mario and Zelda too but since they are used so much Zelda's adventures arent refreshing and new anymore. I cant say much about the 3DS till I see it in action, all they did was talk about it. Seems cool though.

Sony

Sony had a solid conference. They talked about many new games releasing and also focused on the move. While I think the Kinect has a lot of potential in the future right now Move will have the better release sales and critics will like it more cause its still a controller. Sorcery looks pretty sweet hopefully it will be more than just a dungeon crawler.  The 3D looks cool for Killzone and LBP2 is going to be a must buy for me on release day. MediaMolecule could work its way into my top 3 developers depending on just how good LBP2 really is.

The E3 Floor

Surprisingly I actually didnt get to watch a lot of videos from the floor but the few I did watch really looked cool. Bulletstorm looked solid. Dead Space 2 is going to be a must buy for me now, that gameplay was solid. Black Ops will be a pass for me. Too many COD games coming out. And they all play way to similarly. Portal 2 and Fallout New Vegas also were impressive. So overall Sony was my conference winne r but like I said watch out for Kinect in the future(anyone agree?) because it has potential. And for now I leave you with this hahahaha.

I rank the conferences as follows:

1. Nintendo
2. Sony
3 Microsoft

Why?  Nintendo's big thing to show off couldn't really be shown off on the main stage.  Their game announcments made me tear up with joy.   We havn't seen a new DK Country game in over a decade, so that announcement in itself was huge.  Goldeneye returning after 15 years was a huge one.  Kirby getting his own staring game for a console in 10 years.  Kid Icarus returning to the fray.  Disney Epic Mickey.  An amazing show for a company that didn't have big tech to show off.

Sony.  Kevin Butler and Twisted Metal  Nuff Said.

Microsoft didn't really bring anything amazing to the show.  Gears 3 looks exactly like Gears 1 and 2.  Halo Reach is the same Halo we have been playing since Halo CE, and they spent too much time on Kinect.  Like way too much.  Woo hoo I can video chat with my friend who is on Windows Live Messenger.  Woo hoo I can watch ESPN shhhhhhtuff.  Woo hoo.  Controller free gaming.  No thanks.  Pass.

S'funny cause you open up with E3 being a bit of a downer, but then the rest of your write up makes it sound like it was alright.
I agree with on most points, more so than most people whose impressions I read.

I feel like you're the only one who feels how I feel about Nintendo. While everyone talks about what an incredible show they had, all I can think is how Kirby, Kid Icarus, and Donkey Kong Country have more value as names than they do as games. Is the nostalgia tank really that endless that any game that ever appeared on a Nintendo console will instantly receive AAA reception upon announcement?  But I digress.

As a whole E3 on a presentation level seemed more polished and less directed at me than ever - but hearing about what was on the floor, as opposed to what happened in the highly touted "Big 3" press conference has left me with an overall warm feeling inside.

(Nice broken up format by the way, very digestible)

Actually the 360 launched very strong with Kameo Perfect Dark Condemned and a month later DOA 4 and Oblivion were out. As for Kinect I see it as a failure from the start especially if the rumored 150 price tag is there. None of the Kinect games looked like most own games even the star wars game looked like crap. As for the rest it was a microsoft press conference gears halo and a new xboxlive app with some fable thrown in.

I dont see how every name thrown out in that Nintendo Press Conference didn't  impress you (other then just dance 2 ) Every game looked fun and made me happy to own a wii and know friends with a ds. Yea there all sequels ,but so was microsoft and sony I am ok with that. Also the 3DS looks amazing

Sony pretty good games games and more games and hella montages I wish there was less focus on 3D but ill live and instead of pimping out 3D they probably shoulda demoed some psp games like persona 3 or the 3rd birthday cause they all look awesome

Sony's announcements were actually quite exciting for me, actually Portal 2 and Steam on my PS3 were exciting to me. Other than that and the only other thing I was remotely thrilled about was the announcement of ships in The Old Republic and the new cinematic trailer they released for it. Everything else was just kind of "meh" for me. Ya Gears of War 3 was cool looking but you knew what it was going to be, and ya another Zelda game is interesting but its just another Zelda game. Overall I was underwhelmed by E3 this year, EA was the most exciting press conference for me and even that was lacking Dragon Age 2 content.

Oh well, there is always next year.

Well I made it seem alright because I made the best of it. E3 still wasnt as cool for me as it was in past years.

Well I will probably play most of those Nintendo games and I know they'll be good because Nintendo doesn't make bad games for their iconic characters, its just for years all I have wanted is to see something completely new for Nintendo. i mean surely with how many amazing developers they have, they can put their heads together and make a brand new franchise everyone would want to play. That truly would make them the king of gaming for me, but until then its a three way tie. And I didnt see much of the 3DS so like I said I dont want to comment on what I havent seen. And I know $150 seems pricey but if Kinect turns out to be what I think it will be in the future then it will be totally worth it.

@BibleDoctor:
Yes Portal 2 excited me very much. it seemed strange though. They made it seem like a PS3 exclusive but it will be on PS3, 360, and PC. And I will have to pull a Jeff on this one. "You right click and kill stuff." I am a huge Star Wars fan and hopefully it will be better than that haha but like Jeff, I am not content till they quit showing CG trailers and show us some gameplay.
