Happy Birthday MTV...I Guess...

No Caption Provided

On August 1, 1981, at 12:01 a.m. viewers were greeted by John Lack and his words "Ladies and Gentleman, rock and roll."   Then there was an MTV montage video spliced with images of the Apollo Moon 11 landing. Immediately after this viewers were treated to their first music video, The Buggles's aptly titled "Video Killed the Radio Star." After this over sixty more music videos would then play, one after the other, all the while viewers would occasionally be treated with the voice of a Video Jockey, latter called VJs.

This first broadcast was only seen by a few thousand, but latter a few million would watch this same very channel. Many would consider these first few hours as one of the most important moments in television since the switch to color. As many consider MTV the "killer-app" for cable television. With numerous teens begging their parents to subscribe to television and pay for a service that numerous households thought was a free commodity, cable TV had become an acceptable form of television delivery. And for that MTV, maybe we all should thank you.

However, to many you have become an abomination. For with the advent and growing popularity of reality television you have become something that you were never intended to become. To others your founding was detested since your inception.

However for a select few we will merely watch you with the tinge of nostalgia, realizing that you have moved on. On the same hour you aired your first broadcast MTV, you now will air a documentary detailing the life of Michael Jackson, times have surely changed since your first days. Today you now have grown larger and now with numerous tentacles, and you even have become involved in the video game industry. I'll go ahead and say it.  MTV sucks.  It's sucked for years and years now.  They rarely play music and I will never forgive them for canceling Clone High.

@PenguinDust: Hey and I'm not here to say that you are wrong, in fact I agree with you. I'm just here trying to describe the launch of MTV and the fact that MTv is now 28 years old.

@ZombiePie:  Yeah, I know.  I didn't mean to convey any criticism of your post.  In fact I was going to write something longer about what I remember about the first few years of MTV.  I didn't get MTV until 82 or 83, but I do recall the immediate impact it had on music for my generation.  HA!  I used to watch NBC's "Friday Night Videos" in place of MTV back then to see what all the cool kids with cable were talking about.  Early on, there were no videos being made by most American music companies, which is one reason there was so much Brit pop on the channel.  When US record labels started making videos, most were just cleaned up concert films.  Some early directors saw something in the medium and tried to push what was expected.  It would be a few years after '81 that videos really came into their own.  The 10 most memorable videos for those early years in my opinion are...

Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel
Take on Me - A-ha
Money for Nothing - Dire Straits
Relax - Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Safty Dance - Men Without Hats
Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
Love is a Battlefield - Pat Benatar
Hungry Like the Wold - Duran Duran
Burning Down the House - Talking Heads
Come on Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners

If you haven't seen these, then you should because they are constantly referenced in popular culture.

Nobody did MTV better than Michael Jackson.

Not only did he revolutionize the music video, he was the first black artist to be aired on that channel. fuckin A!

About the only time I watch music videos now is when I watch VH1's Metal Mania at one in the morning to get my fill of hair metal. A guilty pleasure.

MTV used to be so good that the fact it's so bad now is even more depressing. It's the same with all their channels besides maybe MTV Dance and VH1 Classic.

Even MTV 2 doesn't play music any more What the fuck.

Like now, you could start a station, and be like Hey Kids, heres an idea you've never seen! its a station, that plays MUSIC VIDEOS! Crazy, I know?! And it would be crazy.

I blame TRL as the downfall.

MTV used to be something. It ain't anymore but it was a cultural landmark back in the day. I think it is a shame it is nowhere near as important today than before; there really hasn't been anything noteworthy from that channel in many many years.

It's sad to see MTV become what it is today.  Oh well, at least I still have my memories.

Totally. I used to wake up early on Saturday just to watch the top rock videos. If I did that now, I would be welcomed by some teenage pregnant slut or Parental Control. What the fuck happened?

@CitizenKane: In the end that's how I feel about MTV today. When MTV aired it's first broadcast the channel was great until shows like "The Realworld" became popular. I detest what it has become today, but there's no going back...

Oh and for those who have no idea why a lot of us are mourning the change of MTV, this is what MTV USED to be like...when they actually reported stuff about music:
