Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Review

5
  • XBGS
  • PS3N
  • PC

Starbreeze's fairytale adventure is so finely crafted, you'd be hard pressed to find many better games this year.

Large stretches of the brothers' journey are less than friendly.
Large stretches of the brothers' journey are less than friendly.

The airy, heartfelt Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons isn't the sort of game you'd expect from Starbreeze, the purveyors of grit and grime that previously brought you sordid fare like Syndicate and The Darkness. Unlike those grimly onerous games, Brothers operates with a beautifully spare efficiency in every aspect of its narrative and design, propelling you through a striking storybook landscape in which gameplay mechanics and thematic storytelling thread together more tightly than most games can manage. The resulting journey is so singularly devoted to creating a specific tone and atmosphere that you won't likely be able to stop thinking about it until long after you've seen it through to the end.

The simple premise has two brothers traipsing across a brilliant fantasy world seeking a mystical cure for their ailing father. The characters speak in a made-up language, allowing the game to paint its emotional hues with a broad brush. That makes it easy to get caught up in the nuances of the individual personalities; the younger brother was present for the drowning of his mother, for instance, so naturally he's afraid of swimming himself and relies on his older brother for help. But his size comes in handy in places only he is small enough to fit. The moment-to-moment journey revolves around the ways these two use their relative strengths to support the other through each of the obstacles their quest subjects them to.

It's the game's uniquely simple control scheme that makes you fully appreciate how much the two characters rely on each other while navigating the harsh landscape in front of them. You move each brother with one of the analog sticks, and perform a single context-sensitive action with the respective trigger. Brothers is a puzzle-driven adventure game, if you want to pigeonhole it, but this isn't a game about brainteasers. The solutions to any given scenario are usually pretty obvious; the challenge comes in managing two distinct characters at the same time. You might find your hands refusing to obey your brain on occasion, but even then, this isn't a difficult game to make your way through. Rather than challenge your manual dexterity or puzzle-solving abilities, it's a game that asks you to focus on the emotional context of the actions you're performing, and you won't be able to play for long without doing exactly that.

No Caption Provided

Though the core of Brothers is its character-driven story, the game would have lingered in my mind for no other reason than the incredible design of its world. You start your journey in a sleepy seaside village, but before you end your quest you'll have encountered numerous, fantastically imagined landscapes and characters plucked from all sorts of classic mythology. And you never linger in one place too long; the game moves you so expeditiously from one location to the next, showing you so many marvelous sights, that it assumes a dreamy, fairytale quality. There's an incredible mastery of distance, scale, and perspective in the way the environments are built and framed; though it naturally looks better on a PC, it's also one of the best-looking games I can remember on consoles as well and performs perfectly fine on those machines too. For a "small" downloadable game, it's stunningly impressive.

(It's tempting to rattle off a dozen specific examples of memorable moments in this game, but this feels like one of those rare games where the less you know about it, the better a time you'll have. Discovering each new environment, and all the imagination and detail contained within, is one of chief joys of playing it.)

The world is so rich, it's tempting to sit down and just gaze at it from time to time.
The world is so rich, it's tempting to sit down and just gaze at it from time to time.

Given the economy of its pacing and storytelling, Brothers is another of what I've come to think of as single-sitting games. Similar to short, emotionally charged experiences like Journey and Gone Home, Brothers isn't especially long but packs such meaning and quality into each scene that it never feels like it's wasting or padding out a single minute. Like those other games, it's designed to follow a specific narrative trajectory, and build up a certain emotional pitch, such that you'd get the most out of it by absorbing it holistically from start to finish. And this is coming from someone who never, ever marathons their way through video games.

Brothers isn't necessarily an uplifting game; to compare it to a fairytale is to evoke the original meaning of that term, the one designed to scare small children. Some grim things occur in the course of the brothers' quest. But the brothers' commitment to their goal and to each other is so strong, the various parts of this game so superbly crafted and woven together, that it's hard not to feel deeply touched when you finally reach the end of the road and see how deftly this game marries its gameplay to its themes in a way few have before. If you're the sort of person who thinks video games are capable of not just entertaining us but also making us think and feel, you owe it to yourself to play Brothers.

@sweetz: By "embarrassing," I mean it's embarrassing for the medium. You press a button and it wrenches control away, goes into a cutscene where the older brother takes the broom, sweeps a couple times, and hands it back. That's character development? That's interactivity?

I don't need them to do something "mature" like taxes or gambling or whatever. I just want stuff that's organic in the world. Remember when Nate could pet the yaks in the Tibetan village? That was organic. That was natural. That wasn't some big production. It was just a thing you could do. Same with petting dogs in Assassin's Creed III.

The interactions in Brothers, just purely based on the demo, seem like something you'd find in an early PS2 game. It felt like when you could fart in Fable and citizens would watch and then clap for you.

so the glitches previously documented in the quick look arent enough to knock this down a star? must be a hell of a game if a glitch that busts a puzzle in a narrative based puzzle game doesn't warrant a drop in the reviewers eyes

@whatisdelicious: To each their own, but I bet you could pick 10 games from that list of 22 that you would rather play than Brothers. That was the only point I was trying to make.

I loved the game, but this year is crazy full of great games. Top 10 of the year is a tall order, Mr. Shoemaker, especially with this year's releases.

yep, I really enjoyed this one. Even more so because it came out of nowhere. I hadn't even heard about it until it popped up on Xbox Live. One of my favorites of the year so far. In the top 10? you bet.

@duxa: Oh, yes. Definitely. GTA V has already taken up about five spaces for me personally.

I guess I'm just not bothered by Brad's comment because he can put whatever games he wants on his personal top ten list.

So many 5 star games this year, there's been what, 3 in the last week lol (Rayman, GTA and this)? Quite a few strong 4s too. 2013 best gaming year ever? And we've still got the new console games coming up, some of which look pretty promising. GOTY is gonna be a blood bath.

@whatisdelicious: But at what point did the game give you the impression it was trying to recreate a "realistic" world? It's an interactive fairy tale, those moments didn't seem unnatural or inorganic to me given the context. As in Fable, it's going for a specific "storybook" tone and I found the interactions to be perfectly suited to that tone. If you're going to be that nit picky about a single little moment in the game, then no you will not enjoy it, especially since you'd probably be going in with that pre-formed opinion and just looking for things to validate it.

I really wish the Brad we see in writing came out more in other venues. When you write you sound excited, you sound enthusiastic about the possibilities of what gaming can do and is doing. Its very jarring, to me, hearing you be the opposite for the majority of the rest of the time.

I thought it was pretty soulless, clunky and self-obsessed, myself - an extreme disappointment. There was a nice payoff right near the end, but shortly before that there was an attempt at an emotional moment that I laughed my arse off at. Brothers kind of felt like everything that those ridiculous, cynical detractors of indie games would champion as why they (misguidedly) don't play the games.

I think I could come up with 20 games I've liked more than Brothers, let alone 10. Comparing this game to something like Journey is frankly insulting to Journey.

Everybody says that the game is so incredible and moving and has such an awesome ending. I really liked the concept, and I was really pumped to play it. Then I played the demo.

.....

So what I want to know is this: Is this game really that good, or does it just have a neat concept and an emotional ending? I've gambled on artsy games before and I'm usually all for them, but $15 is maybe asking a little too much given what I played of the demo.

The demo doesn't do the game justice. I tried the demo and almost didn't buy game. Glad I pulled the trigger. I 1000% agree with Brad on this one.

@sweetz: You use "realistic" in quotes as though I said anything remotely similar. Realistic is not the same as organic. And no, it's not just that one specific moment; I just didn't have that many to pull from given that I've only played the demo and that was the one I remembered. Earlier you mentioned how the brothers "come upon a flower and if you interact with it, the other brother smells it, the younger brother smashes it." That's the exact same thing. It's like, I get what they're trying to do, but they're going about it in such an archaic way. I was doing that kind of stuff in Black & White in 2001.

@ptc: Good to hear. I assumed as much but I wanted to hear it from somebody else first. I might pull the trigger and just buy it soon, but I think I'll try and hold out to wait for a sale. I'm usually pretty terrible at that though.

@whatisdelicious: OK I guess I really don't understand your criteria for what an "organic" interaction is and what distinction you're trying to make. As much as I can gather I think you mean "not cartoony", hence me saying "realistic". As said, I think the interactions being a bit blunt or cartoony are appropriate to the game's style and add to it's charm; I know you disagree but I still don't get what nuance you're expecting in a short form game that's meant to be like a storybook.

I didn't know Brad still wrote reviews, I figured his job was sitting in on quick looks and playing Dota2 at this point.

Haven't played the game, but I kinda ran into huge spoilers casually tuning into JP McDaniel's stream and it didn't really hit me, although you probably get more emotionally attached by playing anyway.

I'll give it a shot, as to what Brad might consider better. Let's see.

  1. DOTA 2 (duh!)
  2. Bioshock Infinite
  3. The Last of Us
  4. Grand Theft Auto V
  5. Rayman Legends
  6. Gone Home (long shot)
  7. Saints Row IV

Now for those that have not come out yet.

  1. Watchdogs
  2. Wind Waker HD
  3. Battlefield 4
  4. Resogun
  5. South Park Stick of Truth
  6. Zelda Link to the Past 2
  7. Super Mario 3D World

Of course this is just a list for Brad and knowing him, Brothers will still end up in his list because by his logic, many of these games will be on everyone else's lists. But I want to see him fight it out with the guys to keep this on the top ten or even if he wants to push it as the game of the year. But look at that. How can he reconcile Dota 2 and Brothers. That requires a podcast all on its own.

I wholeheartedly agree with the review, but I guess Brothers can be a bit of a a hit and miss since it relies so much on your emotions being the defining part of the experience. I, for one, was a sobbing mess by the end of the game and even got goosebumps reading the review, even though it's been a week since I played the game. That's something a game (or a movie or a book) has never done to me before and for that it deserves all the praise it's getting.

However, looking at it objectively I can see that without the emotional payoff it can end up being a pretty empty experience; at worst you're just left with some gimmicky gameplay, simple puzzles and a few nice vistas. But then again it's fifteen bucks and three hours and could very well be an experience that stays with you for a long time so there's really no reason not to try it yourself.

If you could unlock The Darkness and Riddick in this game it would easily be top ten of 2013 material. Without that, I dunno, man.

Riddick and Jackie Estacado are brothers.

Jackie would have to be the younger one. I'd play it.

Sadly, I don't think Brad will put The Last of Us on his list because I don't think he'll play it, at least not this year. I can see Brad nominating most of what you stated in the first 7, though. As for those that haven't come out yet, I doubt Wind Waker HD will make the cut because it's just a remake. Super Mario 3D World is doubtful as Brad doesn't have a Wii U. There's nothing special about Battlefield 4.

I wonder if the tragic events this year amplified the emotional punch of this game for shoemaker.
