Driveclub Review

2
  • PS4

Driveclub looks nice and has a couple of good ideas about handling leaderboard challenges, but the core of it--actually driving a car--drags the entire thing down.

Driveclub looks nice, but doesn't have a ton of options.
Driveclub looks nice, but doesn't have a ton of options.

Driveclub is a very rigid driving game, where the only tweakable gameplay option at your disposal is a choice between automatic and manual transmission. In an era where driving games on both ends of the arcade-to-simulation spectrum deliver car upgrades and a lot of other things that players can use to tailor the experience to their liking, Driveclub's complete lack of meaningful choices makes it feel like a weird throwback to the old, dark days of console driving games. The larger problem, however, is that the game's overly mechanical AI drivers and weirdly grippy car handling make the on-track action lackluster, at best.

The action in Driveclub is broken up into a small handful of events that you can play a couple of different ways. In the single event mode you can set up on any of the game's tracks using any of your unlocked cars in a simple race, a time trial that lets you race as long as you like to set the hottest lap you can, and a drift challenge that scores you based on your speed through the straightaways and your drifts on the curves. If you like, you can have those events fed to you in a more-or-less set order via the game's tour mode, which sets up specific events and classes while also adding some occasional side objectives that earn you stars. Stars are used in the tour mode to unlock additional events in the tour mode.

As you race in any event, you'll earn experience points depending on how you drive. Earning stars in tour mode is a solid way to earn them, but doing things like drafting behind an opposing car, drifting, and clean passes will also add to your total. You lose points for leaving the track, colliding with other cars, and the total at the end of a race is added to your overall score. You'll level up along the way, which is how additional cars are unlocked. The car options are weak, with an almost-exclusive focus on European manufacturers. The developers have plans to sell car DLC, so perhaps this will eventually get addressed, but launching without big names like Honda, Nissan, Toyota, or Ford? It seems almost insane. On top of that, you can't do much with the cars once you've unlocked them. There are no tuning or upgrade options and, aside from a loosely customizable "club" paint job set by the leader of your current car club, even the paint options are extremely limited. Even the "factory" paint job option only offers one color. At some point Driveclub's lack of options crosses out of barebones and into simply appearing to be unfinished. Furthermore, the idea of a set progression of car unlocks instead of offering some way for players to unlock the cars they're specifically interested in feels old and somewhat restrictive for a game that seems like it's trying to lean in the simulation direction of things.

The challenge system is one of Driveclub's high points.
The challenge system is one of Driveclub's high points.

But it's worth pointing out that Driveclub isn't an especially realistic simulation of driving, and apparently that's by design. The cars have an overly grippy feel on the track, letting you get away with some occasional shenanigans by braking at the last possible moment instead of gently braking or coasting into the curves. The developers claim this is an attempt to make the game easier and fun for everyone. But this doesn't make the game feel more fun or thrilling. It just makes what otherwise feels like an attempt at simulating real cars instead feel like it misses the mark by a mile. If this were on by default as an assist for new drivers that could be disabled, potentially along with a series of additional options to let people tailor the driving a bit, maybe this would make sense. Instead it makes the game feel inauthentic to real-life racing while also not going far enough in the "fun" direction to make it an exciting, arcade-style racer.

It gets even weirder when you throw in the game's occasional attempt at enforcing rules. It'll let you brake extremely late into turns and you can pull e-brake drifts and such, but if you get off the track at all it immediately throws up a three-second timer that compels you to get back on the track. If you cut a corner in a way the game feels is giving you an advantage, it gives you a "corner penalty" and reduces your ability to accelerate for a few seconds. Same deal if you decide to slam into another racer--or if the game's single-minded AI decides to slam into you. Though cutting corners isn't cool, the way the game handles it with penalties is the opposite of fun. This seems like the sort of thing that should have been handled on the track design end instead of slapping drivers with penalties.

The game has a proper multiplayer option in addition to the single events and tour, and this allows up to 12 players to compete. The menus are slightly confusing, with a series of choices that don't seem especially different, since the game moves you from one event to the next and one car class to the next as you finish one event and start another, but the online portion of the game is certainly functional. Considering the game's focus on creating groups of users via its club functions, it seems odd that there isn't a big focus on clubs in the multiplayer. It's just a never-ending hopper filled with one-off races. It's worth noting though, that on launch day, and as of this writing, the Driveclub servers have been offline, preventing players from competing against one-another directly or via leaderboard challenges. Without these features, Driveclub feels like even more of a husk, but one has to expect that these servers will work eventually. They worked just fine during the week prior to release.

Your car customization options consist of basic paint style changes and putting numbers and accolade icons on the side.
Your car customization options consist of basic paint style changes and putting numbers and accolade icons on the side.

If there's anything Driveclub can hang its hat on, its that it's a nice-looking game and that it does leaderboards well. Of particular note is the game's day/night cycle, which you can speed up if you want to see the passage of time happen in a more dramatic way. Driveclub's night driving showcases its pretty lighting quite well, though considering you're trying to set good times and win races, I found myself gravitating towards having all my races take place at noon once I had seen the night stuff a few times. Cars shine nicely, again showing off the way light hits them, and it all looks quite striking when you hit dusk. That said, sometimes the ground and wall textures look overly flat and undetailed, and you'll see some scenery pop into view as you get closer to it. Nothing major, it looks good.

The leaderboards in Driveclub are supplemented by a challenge system that lets you take any of your recent past performances and send the time around to your friends. You set a time to respond when sending a challenge, so you can give those friends (or, if your challenge is open, strangers) a few as 30 minutes or as long as a week to respond. The winner of the challenge gets more XP and the prizes increase as more players join a challenge. This also carries over to clubs. Car clubs in Driveclub can be open or invite-only, and clubs are ranked on leaderboards, as well. You can create club challenges to challenge other clubs to beat your performance, and this makes it so each club only gets one entry on the leaderboard. So you can put your entire club onto one challenge and have them all bang away at it in an attempt to win, if you like. Annoyingly, people can send you challenges for cars you haven't unlocked yet, but all in all it's a decent system that would be a lot more useful if it were in a better game.

And, ultimately, that's the real problem with Driveclub. It's a shame that there aren't more options to choose from and the challenge system has potential. But it just isn't much fun to play. The core act of driving a car feels off in a way that completely put me off of playing the game. Without that in place, the rest of it just falls apart. The PlayStation 4 has been without a serious racing option since launch, and Driveclub doesn't fill that gap.

Thanks for the review it made me feel better about suddenly bailing on getting that 10$ discount. I do like race games and will give it a shot it doesn't sound terribly busted but a good rainy day driving game when the release calender winds down and the price drops

I'll try out the PS+ demo later, so I might like the controls better than Jeff does, but you can't dispute one thing:

These guys should've stuck with Motorstorm.

Bummer, I was looking forward to this being a solid racer for my PS4. Hopefully The Crew will be better.

Anyhoo, back to Assetto Corsa on my PC :)

Im not a big racing game fan but this game never looked good to me. Especially when compared to something like Horizon 2. Hell, even The Crew looks more interesting than DriveClub ever did.

I'm definitely going to try the PS Plus version when it comes out. I've been playing Foraza Horizon for the past few days and I'm really enjoying it. It has some issues here and there, but it's the most fun I've had with a racing game in years. There are so many cars, so many different events, so much content. Driveclub seems to offer so much less. I don't really care if the graphics are incredible if the game itself is mediocre or average.

I'm sorry, but I can't take your word for it. The game has been out for less than a day and people claiming it's some incredible game simply can't be trusted.

You're saying that review sites shouldn't matter, but the opinions of random people on the internet who ran out to buy the game on day one should?

I'm never going to trust someone who rushes out and buys a game on day one and starts going on and on about how amazing it is. People like that almost always love the game they just bought. It's basic human psychology and the weakness of the average person. Very few people and strong enough to admit fault in something they are invested in. Especially people who play games and especially those that have an interest in projecting their love for their platform of choice and its exclusives.

Jeff has always liked racing games and I've trusted his opinion for the most part. Should I trust the guy that has been playing it for a while and has seen everything the game has to offer? Or should I trust the guy that ran out to buy the latest PS4 exclusive, played it for a few hours and is gushing about how incredible it is?

I think I'll go with Jeff.

I'm not saying review sites don't matter(although I certainly don't care much about scores), but was questioning why you only care about 4 or 5 websites.

And lots of people buy games and realize they're terrible or at least disappointing in some ways. I certainly didn't try to justify that Colonial Marines was a good game as I played it the moment it unlocked at midnight. Plus the game was 50 dollars, that might be a lot for some people but it's not something that really would effect me in any way.

And it's hard to say when the quick look was recorded but I'm level 20 with about 5 hours played and Jeff is only 22 in the quick look. He could have spent a lot more time with it post QL, but if not we spent around the same time with the game. Game has been out a day at this point.

I could tell by the QL, but damn, Jeff really didn't like this game. Playing FH2 before this probably didn't help, either.

DRIVECLUB would've been a great title, had it been released back when the PS4 launched: An awesome looking racer, fun arcade racer, even if is lacking in features. It sure does play a hell of a lot better than NFS Rivals

PS: Also: DRYCLUB.

If nothing else I can't understand the soulless complaints, driving as day comes to a close and the sky turns bright orange at dusk is exhilarating. The day/night cycle and lighting really make the game come alive in a way very few racing games have for me. The game might not have personality in the sense of Horizon 2's frat rave dude or Top Gear humor in Forza 5, but it really comes out while racing. Of course, some events are shorter than others so it doesn't always shine.

Ugh and double-ugh. At least they weren't pushing the preorder angle as hard with this one as some other recent disappointments. And I'll at least give the free Plus tracks a whirl.

At least I have WRC4 and Grid Autosport to play, having picked those up on sale recently on PSN, so I'm not totally out of driving games.

Listening to the bombcast I wondered if Jeff was considering giving this a 1.

I guess it's not completely busted, just profoundly underdone.

Honestly not sure why this game even exists, I always thought GranTurismo was the Sony Racing game. I think Evolution Studios was on a better path when they were making Motorstorm. Driveclub sounds like a very un-needed wannabe serious racing sim that doesn't do anything particularly well.

And the shit show that is the PS4 exclusive content continues.

I seriously do not know why that console is even selling, the Wii U and Xbox One have WAY better exclusives, I haven't touched my PS4 since last year....

Interesting, it is the opposite for me. PS4 and WiiU get all my play time. Forza Horizon 2 is the first game I have played since Peggle 2 came out.

I will give PS+ demo a go, and judge for myself if its worth the purchase.

Gran Turismo is a simulation, this is an arcade game where you take turns at high speeds and complete score based challenges such as staying over 120 MPH around a corner. It's really not meant to be a sim, nor does it try to be. There is a middle ground between iracing and Need for Speed, and this fills it well while having incredible attention to detail. If one likes Project Gotham Racing, this is very much in the same vain (in terms of handling, no city racing :/)

Shame Jeff didn't like the handling, but it's worth giving the PSN trial a go and seeing if it catches you.

Besides being beautiful this game never looked interesting in any way, no surprise then that it's a disappointment. Will be interesting to see if Sony green light a sequel. I think normally they might consider it but given the problems they had just getting the game out then maybe not.

P.s. Some of the comments on this review are insane.

It's alright. I like the handling. The game is just middle of the road on everything else so far. I guess sterile is my first thought. Better than Rivals. It sucks that a piece of crap like Rivals is the bar on PS4 for racers.

Yeah, gonna have to say that so far I agree with Jeff. The handling sucks. And I'm sorry, but locking up the best cars until you reach a much higher level is bullshit. I hate it when driving games do that. Just let me drive the fucking cars.

And the AI is way too rigid. Doesn't help that I haven't even been able to log on to the servers all day, so I haven't been able to play with actual humans.

It's just so disappointing that everything in this game is so half-baked.

If Driveclub PS Plus edition ever goes live on PSN, I really want to give this a shot and see if it's a stripped-down racer I can enjoy. I just cannot gel with games like Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsports, but things like Forza Horizon or The Crew look about right for me.

I've been enjoying the game even with the poor reviews. It's a pretty good 'relax' game that I can play while looking at the very, very pretty cars and tracks and put on a podcast and listen to it.

I just wish the servers were working.

Weird that I watched the Quick Look and actually thought that, in all seriousness, this may be the car game for me. Forza and Gran Turismo have always been daunting and overly feature-rich and Need For Speed is too blazing-around-crashing-into-crap style for me. There's a place for Burnout Paradise in my heart, but I almost think this game might (might) be the kind of experience for me. At least it's easy to get your hands on and try it out.

I think a good approach to a driving game is to find one with a handling model you like, and then just put on a good Spotify playlist and relax. I'm still willing to give the PS + version of this a shot, but there's still Gran Turismo 6, that I've been tempted to get back into.

Weirdos.

The whole point of having a comments section on a review is to discuss it and compare experiences and the like, otherwise it'd be closed. No one is really being rude or nasty, and I've just presented my more positive impressions of the game. Think there's a lot to love if you enjoy the handling which many do.

I've had a couple of goes of this and have to say I enjoyed the way it handles. I also think racing games are getting a bit bloated with all the different modes and gimmicks that get included in them these days so the stripped back nature of this might not bother me. (I'm not that keen on BO Paradise so I know me and Jeff don't allign when it comes to racing games, although I did like Forza Horizon as did he)

I've got plus so I'll grab the free version to make my mind up.

It boggles my mind how people didn't know this wasn't a simulation game. They presented it as arcade from the start. How Jeff didn't know this i'll never understand.

I totally thought this was a simulation game. They way they went on about it and the presentation made it look like a rival to Forza.

Justin Towell of Gamesradar game it a 4 out of 5.

"Driveclub echoes the 1994 Need For Speed in that it just wants you to enjoy the act of driving. Even newbies can just hold R2 and zoom along.." ".. use other cars as brakes and leave the road without getting left in last place for the entire race. And there are a lot of straight road moments where all you have to do is hold 'go'"

I guess there are a lot of different things we want for in a car game i guess. Me myself was hoping for a bit more Forza like experience on the handling.

Seems like Jeff pretty much nailed the score of this game (based on my preferance)

I can see where this score is coming from, the game seems to lack some stuff you just expect to find in a 2014 racing game. Like instant replays, actual car damage (not just paint scraped off), track damage (fences being obliterated), etc.

I like racing games, I've bought this one and played for 30/40 minutes. The whole online stuff is not working yet, which is a bummer, because I think it makes the games' options even more simplistic. The handling of the car was fine, it's somewhere between GT and an arcade racer. Due to weight shifting and lesser grip (off the road) you really can spin and when you do you have no chance of coming back.

This game is a bit weird as in it's not a real racer I like. I like being on a closed circuit, improving lap times and fiddle a bit with car settings. I like championship races, with a lot of other cars on the track. I could also enjoy a good rally game, but again because of the championship options.
Driveclub feels to me more like rally game, because it's outdoors and most of the time (correct me if I'm wrong) there are no 'laps', but sectors. It's a straight A to B race.
The roads are very narrow and there is a lack of tight corners, so this results in cars hitting each other. If an opponent is driving in the middle of the road, you can not pass him without either going off track or scraping his side.

I really wanted a racegame on the PS4, so Driveclub it is for now. If only F1 2014 was released on current gen consoles :(.
