Hyrule Warriors Review

3
  • WiiU

This odd Wii U collaboration plays like a guided tour of The Legend of Zelda’s most iconic locations and characters. The price of admission? Playing a bunch of Dynasty Warriors.

For better and for worse, Nintendo has never shied away from taking its first party franchises in unexpected directions. Donkey Kong has been all over the map, from 2D platformers to a Mario 64 wannabe to bongo-controlled GameCube games. Star Fox traded in his pilot’s license for a staff in Star Fox Adventures. Metroid found success in first-person with the Prime series, only to disappoint some fans later on with the Other M experiment.

One franchise that Nintendo has never tinkered with to this degree is The Legend of Zelda. Possibly their most critically revered franchise, the detours the series has taken have focused more on unique gameplay mechanics (sailing in Wind Waker, manipulating time in Majora’s Mask, transforming into a wolf in Twilight Princess, etc.) than on genre-changing sequels. That’s why the announcement of Hyrule Warriors caught almost everyone by surprise. The relatively unsullied name of The Legend of Zelda (we won’t count those CD-i titles) has joined forces with Dynasty Warriors, a series with a less-than-stellar reputation that nonetheless possesses a following that’s warranted sequels in the double digits.

Numerous familiar faces team up with Link.
Numerous familiar faces team up with Link.

Hyrule Warriors is exactly what most people would envision when asked to conjure up the image of an Omega Force-developed Zelda game. Through and through, this is a Dynasty Warriors game that’s seen the characters and locations of The Legend of Zelda dropped into it.

To be fair, the nonstop barrage of Zelda references isn’t half-baked. Omega Force is clearly a fan of Link’s adventures, and reminders of this are everywhere. Locations from Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword make up most of the battlefields, so you can look forward to slaughtering hundreds of enemies at Lake Hylia, Gerudo Desert, Skyloft, Ganon’s Castle, and plenty more. Playable characters run the franchise gauntlet, including mainstays (Link, Zelda), side characters (Impa, Darunia, Midna), and the blue-haired newcomer Lana.

Taking control of these other characters is one of the great novelties of Hyrule Warriors. In a series that’s always forced us to play as various incarnations of Link, taking control of the franchise’s other memorable characters proves to be one of the best elements of the experience. Each of them features a variety of unique special attacks, many of which can take out dozens of enemies in a flashy spectacle. This gonzo approach to combat can be a fun alternative to traditional Zelda gameplay. Whereas the main series has players placing and throwing single bombs in measured, specific fashions to open a door or defeat an enemy, Hyrule Warriors unleashes a barrage of bombs indiscriminately with one button press. It looks like a Zelda game at first glance, but Hyrule Warriors doesn’t take long to establish its wildly different gameplay.

The new character Lana joins the Legend of Zelda mainstays.
The new character Lana joins the Legend of Zelda mainstays.

Unfortunately, that’s what brings down the experience as a whole. Dynasty Warriors games have earned their reputation as repetitive, mindless button mashers. There’s certainly a specific audience for this, but Hyrule Warriors does little to appeal to those that don’t already belong in that group. Even as a huge Zelda fan, the novelty of revisiting iconic locations and playing as characters that aren’t named Link wasn’t enough to make me look past the gameplay. Fighting as Zelda is pretty cool at first, but the effect wears off when you’re jamming the Y button for the 500th time as you slash through another castle full of mindless skeletons. A few battles against larger boss characters help to shake things up, but these are few and far between.

Elements of the game attempt to deepen the experience, but they’re mostly of the basic “find new weapons, collect materials to craft items, pay rupees to level up quicker” variety. Taking a trip to the in-game bazaar between missions is a nice way to tweak your weapons before your boots are back on the ground, but it certainly doesn’t distract from the mindless slashing you’re required to do 95 percent of the time.

If you want to tackle these repetitive missions more quickly, a co-op mode is in place that allows a second player to use the GamePad. This does cause the framerate and resolution to take a noticeable dip, however. It’s by no means unplayable, so playing with a friend is a nice alternative if you’re tired of slashing through the hordes solo.

Great Fairies can turn the tides of some battles.
Great Fairies can turn the tides of some battles.

If you’re a Dynasty Warriors fan that has stuck through its countless sequels and spinoffs and still aren’t tired of the formula, then Hyrule Warriors offers plenty more. If you’re a Zelda fan on top of a Dynasty Warriors fan, then it’s an obvious slam dunk. It has a full story mode, a free mode that allows you to play as any character, and even an NES-inspired adventure mode that has you completing challenges and collecting items across a map inspired by the first Zelda title. There’s no shortage of content, assuming the core gameplay is something that’s up your alley to begin with.

Hyrule Warriors is an odd move for Nintendo, but it’s one that will make a specific audience of the gaming world very happy. As someone who loves Zelda and is lukewarm at best on Dynasty Warriors, I appreciated the references to the former while becoming frustrated at the bare-bones gameplay of the latter. This quirky offshoot is better than any Dynasty Warriors game I’ve played, while simultaneously being the worst Zelda game I’ve ever played.

Sadly it was a review of hot garbage video game, but yay.

Really? A three is hot garbage? Harsh man harsh...

Kevin Van Ord at Gamspot gave it an 8.0 and he is a tough reviewer. He only gave Mass Effect 2 a 9.0... still haven't forgiven him for that one ;p

Does this game have the Dynasty Warriors morale system? Does your crew of dudes get a little depressed now and then?

I'm interested in playing this purely for the Zelda when I can pick it up for less than $20. And considering this is a Nintendo title, that may never happen.

Good review! That Lana character looks real lame though. Like they threw a vocaloid into the mix or something.

If I ever get a Wii U I'll probably check this out. Warriors games are fun enough.

I think I'm still going to get this. I've played one Dynasty Warriors game in my lifetime so the formula isn't old for me.

I kind of like the idea of fighting off a ton of enemies at the same time. Especially as Impa.

I am honestly amazed at all of the posts saying stuff along the lines of "I still might like this!" It just goes to show that slapping a fresh coat of Hyrule-themed paint onto these lazy games is having the intended result: Sales! Marketing triumphs once again and a game that is the equivalent of a clickbait article has people gushing over it despite tepid reviews.

There is a glitch which allows you to swap movesets between characters so... this is a five star game.

Or maybe three stars doesn't mean the game is horrible. It means that it's potentially okay, albeit with limited appeal.

Glad to hear you stuck to your opinion on this. I have been hearing some people say they love this game, same people who hate dynasty warriors. baffles me. I personally will be picking this up :D

Sometimes that shiny new wrapper is enough to get people into a thing, even if it doesn't change their opinion on the matter. I don't have an active disinterest for the Dynasty Warriors formula, but this might just be enough to get me to try it. I'm sure that was true for some with the Gundam licensed games.

I liked the second One Piece game they made. When I tried to play straight up Dynasty Warriors I was bored. Maybe because One Piece is very over the top and the characters have strange powers.

Dynasty Warriors isn't awful, but you only really need to play one of those games. They haven't really gone to that next level even though they started out with what seemed like a grand scope for the game. Just year after year it's failed to deliver that next level and it's still the same, lots of dudes, zilch for brains on the ai, shoddy graphiced game it's always been.

Thanks for the review, Dan. As a fan of both the Zelda series and pressing the attack button many times, I'm super excited for this and hoping it'll show up in the mail tomorrow morning.

I'm just a little disappointed by the lack of Lu Bu to pursue.

Grats on the first review, Dan. I'm very excited about this game, but mostly because I've never played a Dynasty Warriors game but I am a huge Zelda fanatic.

I do wonder... what about for those of us who are Zelda fans but have somehow never tried a Dynasty Warriors game? I played the demo of this at Target and enjoyed it a lot even though it was pure button spam nonsense...

Funny that people are surprised Dan is a solid reviewer. Have been following his name in GameInformer for a while and always found his writing up to par.

He may grace your screens and airwaves as a beer swilling taco eating wresting watching sonofa pretty cool sounding mum but he has to roll that paper somehow so he has learned how to write a good review.

Hopefully more content created like this will take the uncultured filthy redneck shine off the apple that is Dan and allow people to see why they picked this asshole out of a big ol tub of other qualified people.

As someone who doesn't buy many games near release anymore, I decided to take the plunge on this "Zelda" a month ago when I was able to get $8 off of the pre-order. I know that everything about this game screams PRICE DROP, but it still is a Nintendo published game. Their prices cannot be predicted by even the most Wizardly of Wizards. If I get burned by cheap copies everywhere in 2 months, then so be it. I know what I am buying and I have made my peace.

From your review, Dan, Hyrule Warriors is about what I expected it to be like. I've never played a Dynasty Warriors game but with the Legend of Zelda universe draped over it I'm willing to give it a shot. Plus I'd like to play something on my Wii U.

Has anyone seen if you can play as Ganondorf from the start or do you have to unlock him?

Well written.

"There’s certainly a specific audience for this, but Hyrule Warriors does little to appeal to those that don’t already belong in that group"

I think this the best line as that shows the real shortcomings of trying take a known ip into new territory. It's not enough to rehash ideas without adding innovation. I really want to play this game. I want to play as the characters that I love. What I don't want to do is play dynasty warriors.

When I saw that the game pad can act as the split screen, I was disappointed to find that mario kart doesn't do this. It's a shame as it can offer a unique change to the problem of screen real estate (not that a wii u game pad screen is the best thing to play on but it's something)

Never played a dynasty warriors game before, but i have played a lot of drakengard, which looks like it plays similar to a warriors game, and since it comes out tomorrow here I might give this a go.

Also this is a pretty good review, not that i expect dan to write a bad review, but its nice to see.

Is this Dan's first official Giant-Bomb revue?

I would play a Dynasty Warriors game if they made a street version called Da-NASTY Warriors.

And would Dan play a Defense of the Triforce (or whatever bullshit) Hyrule MOBA? What if it was on the 3DS? These are the important questions of our generation.

Those pics are hilarious for a variety of reasons. That was an excellent review, Dan. I don't want to judge reviews like a wine aficionado judges wine, but really, top form. Great combo of straight info about the game combined with your background with both series involved. Loved it. Thanks buddy. P.S. Your review had a nice afterbirth, with a touch of oak.

Other M was deeply discounted within it's first year of release in North America. The Wonderful 101 can be bought for around $30 and it is only now a year old. If Hyrule Warriors sells as much as those two, the game should get cheap relatively quickly.
