Tetris Effect Review

5
  • PS4

Solid Tetris and the unique visual style of Tetsuya Mizuguchi fit together like two L blocks.

Editor's note: This review was originally conducted in a podcast format, available as a video above or right here as an audio file. A summary of the review follows.

How do you innovate on Tetris? The core game itself is just as playable as it was over 30 years ago. Sure, you can change the rules of how the game plays, create new modes, or mash it up with other games. It feels like many modern versions of Tetris have asked “how do we make Tetris more fun,” but nobody has asked “how do we make Tetris more of an experience?”

Enter Tetsuya Mizuguchi and Enhance Inc. with Tetris Effect, which blends the core mechanics of Tetris with the unique visual and audio stylings of past Mizuguchi games like Rez and Lumines. In the game’s main Journey mode, players are taken on a trip through 27 levels, each with their own unique and interactive skin and music. Clearing a set number of lines will bring players from one stage to the next, transitioning between visual soundscapes that are themed around flying windmills, volcanic hulas, and space whales. Beating Journey from start to finish will only take about two hours or so, and it takes you through levels that are range from relaxing to very technically challenging. There's decent replayability to be found with different difficulties and modes that you unlock after completing it.

Tetris Effect does an incredible job of keeping the player immersed, and one of the best ways it does it is by giving the player control of the music. Moving tetriminos, rotating and dropping them, and clearing lines affects the music in dynamic ways. This is only complimented by playing the game in VR. This, surprisingly, was my favorite way to play the game. The first time I booted up the game in VR and was able to look around me and see myself being showered in falling stars as trance/world music washed over me was my favorite VR experience to date. The interactivity of the music, the intense and sometime overwhelming visuals, and solid core gameplay all blend together to create a cohesive and sometimes emotional experience. The few songs in the game with lyrics all share a common motif--togetherness--and as cheesy as it sounds, you feel like you’re part of something bigger when playing in VR.

In addition to the Journey mode, the game features Effect mode. These are a series of Tetris variants, and feature some models you might be familiar with. There are established modes like Marathon (clear 300 lines as fast as you can) or Sprint (clear 40 lines in a set amount of time), but also new modes such as Purify, where players must kill off infected tetriminos as fast as possible. These offer a good break from the core game, and even act as tutorials to a degree. Take, for example, the mode called All Clear. This mode gives you a partially filled in well with a set number of pieces to drop. I found playing this mode allowed me to spot unique solutions to problems in my regular Tetris play. Tetris Effect will also have weekend challenges, where players must come together and clear a certain number of lines to unlock new avatars for players to use on their profiles, adding a reason to come back to the game frequently.

Tetris Effect, from top to bottom, is my favorite iteration of Tetris yet. The music and visuals work together to create a truly unique Tetris experience, that is only enhanced by VR.

The review is back, and I'm gonna have to bust out the PSVR for this. Good review Ben.

*PS, I played the weekend demo, and didn't seem to have a handle of the game. Then I watched some videos of it being played on Twitter and realized I was playing it completely wrong. I'm looking forward to buying it giving it a second go around.

I kept thinking God of War or Red Dead 2 would be my game of the year but I’m ever more convinced that Tetris Effect is the best experience I’ve had with video games this year.

@iammattfox: I haven’t tried any kind of VR yet but personally, in a dark room with good headphones, I was completely entranced the whole time I was playing. This game is incredible.

I still fully assume that Tetris using the word "tetrimino" instead of "tetromino" stems from someone trying to type tetromino on a keyboard and missing the o-key by one.

This is the correct score. Now it's a matter of where I'll rank it in Game of the Year, but it's looking like a top 3.

They put a Lumines skin on top of near-perfect game design, while adding cool modes and implementing VR really well. Turns out that's all I needed.

This fucking game came out of nowhere for me and it seriously is one of the best artistic experiences this year. It certainly is the most memorable tetris game in recent memory...(besides Dr. Dog, the dog doctor from poyo poyo tetris)

Even when you set the camera to zoom all the way out in the menus you can still zoom out sometimes. I always zoom all the way out to get a better overview in VR. This is a problem when some of the levels drop pieces so quickly RIGHT from the start that I barely have a chance zooming out at all. That pisses me off a little bit.

And thirty seconds after I type this, Ben mentions it. THANK YOU, BEN.

Oh and let me CHOOSE one or more default songs for my own playlist that will play in order or shuffled no matter what level I play because I'm - not - a fan of some of the songs.

Great review. So excited to see people warming up to the good that VR can offer. I only played the demo of this, and I loved it. Waiting for a 30%ish sale before I buy it, kinda pricy for someone who isn't a tetris superfan (although I still regard Tetris as amongst the most perfect games ever created.)

Keeping my fingers crossed for more trippy VR games. Nothing more soothing in this world!

I'm a diehard Tetris fan who has logged in well over a 2000 hours across multiple entries in the series. Tetris Effect is the best version of new Tetris yet. The huge array of visual options and soundtrack really make this game stand out among its peers. Add to that the many interesting and fun effect modes and the fun Journey mode and well it's a perfect package. I got PSVR for this game and while VR I've found somewhat lackluster, without a doubt Tetris Effect is the most fun I've had with it.

@sil3n7 To be fair, Rez came like 15 years later on PC. Hopefully we won't have to wait as long. I too wish to plug in my Rift again (the last time was for Rez). BIG UPS MIZ!

I don't understand the huge emotional response some reviewers are having to this game (not necessarily Ben, though he mentions an emotional response; I'm talking more like Peter Brown's hyperbolic review). There's just utterly nothing in the game that inspires any sort of euphoria or awe in me; I've never had such a gulf between what reviewers are promising and my actual experience with the game.

Actually, I find Tetris Effect quite unpleasant overall, since the gameplay is usually cranked up to such high speeds that you have to rely on infinite spin (and slopping pieces over to places they shouldn't be able to get thanks to the weird-ass physics engine) to get anywhere. That ain't Tetris, man.

This seems like a game best suited to the Switch. Tetris, afterall, was made famous because of the GameBoy game, and it's one of those games that's perfect for a portable.

Or... considering the VR aspect, it would be perfect for Oculus Go and Oculus Quest.

Tetris Effect goes out of its way to include extra boneheaded gameplay elements on top of the perennial wackness of the guideline.

It looks very nice, but ultimately it plays pretty fucking bad.

It's the Detroit: Become Human of Tetris.

@subscryber: yes, that is exactly what it is. Why is that a bad thing? you can do that for anything, can't you?

PUBG is just "shooting people on an island"

geometry wars is just "flying in space and shooting shapes with cool effects"

you know?

@griz: Because Tetris has been a game with a million iterations already. Does Tetris with a visualizer really deserve all this high praise?

I'm not being reductive, but you are.

PUBG is not just shooting people on an island (there's looting, positioning, communication, teamwork, and a whole hell of a lot of other things), but Tetris is literally just Tetris (you stack different shaped blocks). It's not like a game like Crazy Towers, which is a riff on Tetris rules and a new game (not saying Crazy Towers is an amazing game or anything.) There's nothing wrong with Tetris, but this is literally just Tetris with a visualizer and music. And it's $40!

The unanswered question is: "why is 'just Tetris with a visualizer' getting such glowing reviews and outlandish praise?".

You know?

Um, people are reading the reviews. That's how they know it's Tetris with a visualizer and that the reviews are good in the *first* place. Please keep up with the conversation.

Me, I've cleared the damn game a couple times, and I still don't what the reviewers are banging on about.
