Giant Bombcast 569: Please Tip Your Jumpmaster

Respawn drops a new game out of nowhere and we spend a bunch of time talking about it, plus a smaller Switch, IRC memories, a world of Dr. Mario, a visit to the Strangereal, and a fresh serving of new-console speculation.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

@adamstambaugh: Windows is a privacy nightmare? Jesus, some of you people really go off the deep end. Turn the telemetry to the lowest setting - there, same crap that was in Win 7, same as what is on the iPhone and other iStuff. Thinking you should be able to turn it off entirely, is fine - basically lying about how "bad" privacy is on Windows is FUD. Acting like there are not ways to turn that stuff of (a search for such is easy), is bizarre (people seem to suddenly not get Windows "modding" for things important to them, and instead need to puke 'sky is falling' nonsense into any comment thread online, even ones nothing to do with MS/Windows).

BTW - how much of Google and/or Facebook stuff do you use? If any, you are a massive, massive hypocrite. (particularly if you use Android, a more person device with infinitely less privacy than if you have telemetry on full in Windows 10)

@binarygod: Oof, aggressive. That's probably my fault but I can't think of a better word than "nightmare" from my perspective. I don't really keep up on the news around Windows anymore. I fell off back when Vista came out. I have seen plenty of discussion around some of the things people have found that Windows scrapes and reports. That said, I'm not an expert. If someone is interested in privacy on Windows, there's plenty of resources out there and I'd encourage people to look up information about it. I'm pretty sure privacytools.io has a section dedicated to Windows 10. Though, Debian has super user-friendly tools anymore out-of-the-box.

No, I don't use any Facebook or Google products or services, outside of some people I watch still use youtube as a CDN (which I either access through Tor Browser or MPV [via youtube-dl]). The worst I put up with is Twitter, ProtonMail, and this site. As for Android, I do have a smartphone running LineageOS. I'm also really excited for the Librem 5 (if it ever comes out).

I just stick to a simple rule: I don't trust proprietary code. Am I worried about proprietary code doing anything malicious and harmful? Not really. I just don't really have any reason to trust it. So I just firejail any proprietary software with the "--net=none" argument. I'm not insane enough to go full RMS.

The main thing I was pointing out is: with EA's history, I figured most EA users would just assume they were scraping everything they could. I wasn't trying to fearmonger or anything, I think my post came off in a way I didn't intend. I figured at this point most people have made their decisions and set their priorities. If someone is fine with analytics, then I'm not going to judge them. One person's privacy nightmare is another person's well supported platform on the gaming front.

I guess they forgot about that H1Z1 auto royale mode they played on UPF when they were discussing that Burnout email. Not that it's some shining example of car combat quality in a battle royale, but still.

Isnt ray tracing already something they've BEEN doing in prerendered videos like at Pixar? i thought the big deal about it WAS that it was real time...?

Also i dont think ray tracing is the thing thats going to stick, everything ive seen about path tracing seems like its going to be the better, faster way to go
