I'm really put off by jeff shitting on Alyx, He's so negative, and everything else I've read is overwhelming positive. He was the same with death stranding. Watching his quick look didn't even look like he wanted to be playing this game. Brad was mostly all positive on what little he played.

Jeff especially has been overly negative, even more so on big budget games. It's almost out of touch to a certain extent.

@therealturk: I'd have to disagree on the glory kills there. In Doom 2016 I felt the constant need to use them on higher difficulties to survive tough fights and scrap together any healing. Also, for what it's worth in Eternal you can equip the rune to make the glory kills basically instantaneous.

I've noticed if Jeff shits on a game the other guys become kind of timid not wanting to disagree out right. they all kinda fall in line and start putting in their complaints where If jeff didn't start out crapping on something you would probably here them be much more positive.

I think Doom Eternal is a really good riff on 2016. I'm pretty surprised by the takes on this episode. I don't know what 2016 game everyone else played but I was chainsawing and glory killing all the time in that one too.

I always thought it seemed like 2016 Doom lucked into being a good game with wide appeal rather than deliberately being that way, and it seems like that may be right. (Note I said wide appeal - I know people still like Eternal.) I was never interested in that Doom myself, and it seems like Eternal has doubled or tripled down on the exact aspects that I didn't like, so I guess I'm glad I never got invested in it.

The thing about Animal Crossing fruit is, you actually kind of don't want to start with what your favorite fruit is. Your native fruit ends up being worthless, as non-native fruit sells for more. So once you start collecting the other fruit types, you'll start ignoring whatever your native fruit is because it sells for much less. So it's actually better if you start out with a fruit you're not particularly fond of.

Also yeah the music playing in the background was annoying as hell, please don't do that again.

At least from watching Brad’s Doom Eternal Quick Look, I think he treats the enemy weak points as if they’re a layer of armour he HAS to destroy first before dealing with the enemy. The number of times where he just DPS’d a Revenant to death with a weapon was almost zero, compared to the number of times he insisted on using sticky grenades or whatever to blow off both shoulder cannons first.

Overall, some of the GB crew Doom criticisms are personal taste (writing is bad, levels too long, platforming not a preferred use of time in a Doom game), but their combat complaints seem to stem from trying to force a certain play style which sometimes makes the game harder.

Did Brad completely miss Microsoft's tweet clarifying that their BC stuff for Xbox Series X won't be 100% and that they're doing as much testing as they can to ensure as many games are ready for launch as possible?

@nickhead: this is the part I find a little baffling about some of the more pointed criticism here. Especially because I am replaying 2016 right now. Even on Hurt Me Plenty you bleed health so fast in ordinary encounters ON THE FIRST Mission that glory kills are a constant essential element to survival. And then bigger combat sequences, bouncing between the chainsaw and the glory kill is the same. I love 2016, but the big difference is that some of the weapons in that are basically worthless, whereas in Eternal I feel like I can survive long enough with any gun if used the right way. Or at least, long enough to chainsaw again.

It makes me feel like many are misremembering 2016, because it was not this vastly different game from Eternal. It was just kind of a more limited version of what Eternal is, and honestly it plays worse in retrospect.

Yeah I too am increasingly disliking DOOM Eternal. Doom 2016 was my one of my favorite games of the previous decade, but Eternal's new systems and changes are just so stressful and un-fun. I got 6 missions into Ultra Violence and felt worn out in a negative way.

I'm kind of surprised by the negativity towards Half-life Alyx... because I've had an Oculus Rift since day one... and this was possibly the coolest thing I have ever done in VR. Just the attention to detail in the environments, the amount of interactivity... the whole package is just amazing. Yes, in a way it is 'every VR made in the last few years' but they upped the ante on almost every single level. Like the drawings on that first window and lining up the drawings with the environment by moving your head around, or playing with that video camera looking through the window... just the incredible amount of detail everywhere. I'm kind of blown away. It totally is a reason to have VR in my opinion... I'm a bit surprised that other people don't see it the same way. It's definitely the best LOOKING vr game I've played. Granted... I have an RTX 2080 and settings cranked to the highest... I will spend 5 minutes per room just looking around sometimes... it looks so amazing.

@sethmode: agree totally. Some enemies are best tackled with certain weapons but if those weapons are out of ammo I can still hang and take care of business.

I'm really curious as to what part of Artifact's business model that Ben found "terrible." In a world where every digital CCG is a money pit cesspool like Hearthstone and Magic, having an actual TCG where you can just, y'know... buy the cards you want and sell/trade the ones you don't, all for a few bucks instead of hundreds of dollars, it seemed like a no-brainer.

Then the internet decided that was bad... because the game was also $20? I don't get it. I bought the game, immediately made more money back in Steam credit than I spent on it, and still had the cards I wanted. It was awesome. My problems with Artifact had to do with the absolutely absurd RNG, not the fact that was the first fully functional digital TCG I'd ever played.
