Giant Bombcast 02/03/2015

Our very favorite Irishman Danny O'Dwyer joins us to shake off Super Bowl hangovers and talk about European American Football, the down low on Dying Light, SOE's sudden independence, the dangers of Mendocino County, and the most learned analysis of Nintendo financials you'll hear anywhere.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

I dunno about this ProFlowers thing, guys. Last time I went to a mail order service and typed in "BOMB", it got me on a government watch list.

So it seems the argument against the N64 isn't against what it is or the games but against what expectations were, which were severely overhyped among those in the media. I don't understand how it can be a bad machine when it was the more powerful machine at 2/3 the price. And it did 4 player and game saves without any accessories. Sure the screen was fuzzy but it also didn't suffer from texture swimming/dancing or whatever you want to call it where textures were constantly moving even when nothing was happening. That is way more distracting.

@alejansolo: Yeah, a lot about them don't hold up, but they hold up more so than their PSX counterparts. Take any given genre, menu-based games like jrpgs aside, and there are playing/performing games on the N64. The Turoks, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark all hold up way better than any shooter on Playstation and that's not even close (also they taught people to play southpaw, the right way to play console shooters ;-) ). Rogue Squadron 1 is better than any flight game we've gotten on consoles since Rogue Squadron 3 (or any Star Wars game since then for that matter). Also No Mercy was the last good wrestling game* aside from Def Jam Vendetta (which was a No Mercy reskin).

And I'll take the N64 controller over the PS1/2/3 controller any day. Yeah it had less buttons than the eventual Dual Shocks but by the time I was 14 and bought a PSX off a classmate in early 2001 my hands were already too big for it. Those controllers were the least ergonomical design to date.

I'm not saying the N64 was perfect nor am I saying the PSX was bad, but as far as playability some of those games hold up just as well as anything else at the time. Many of them are still fun today.

*Wrestling games peaked with WCW vs. NWO Revenge. Another reason why 1998 was one of the best years in gaming.
