Giant Bombcast 05-14-2013

With Jeff out of the office on pre-E3 business, we spend an inordinate amount of time on Durango speculation while also finding the time to talk Metro: Last Light, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Prison Architect, and more!

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

Avengers Blu-ray came out in September 2012?

You've had 8 months to watch it.

Re: steakhouses and medium rare, I'm with you Patrick. I gotta scope out places first before I go with that because I can't trust every place to do it right.

Re: corn, that was definitely How It's Made. I think you were sort of right there Brad. They started out less edible, were bred to be more edible, but not the large ears of yellow corn. The modern bulk foodstuff for the world is a more recent thing.

The Woman Rack thing reminds me of a weird conflict that occurred in my house. My wife makes really excellent mashed potatoes, all thick, fluffy & buttery, and one time when my parents were over for dinner my dad made some comment about how you can stand the serving spoon up in them. Unbeknownst to me, my wife took this as some kind of snide comment and harbored a quiet resentment about it that she eventually voiced "offhand" on another occasion when we were making mashed potatoes. I quickly explained that the comment was unironic admiration, and that I'd previously heard him talk about how "the spoon stands up" is an indicator of good mashed potatoes, including in context of his mom's astonishingly good cooking. I think she believed me but I can never tell...

Holy shit, I can't believe you guys just made a joke about a poop gong. My roommate and I actually have that in our main apartment bathroom. And it is for exactly what you mentioned; after you drop a deuce, you bang the gong to warn others that the bathroom is temporarily not safe. And, y'know, sort of also to self-congratulate for creating masterful toilet logs.

@patrickklepek As a Russian myself, I'd like to bring some Russian perspective to your idea of "Russian" games and things.

First: Metro is "Russian" only as a weird amalgamation of ideas about what Russian or, even closer, Soviet people were like. That kind of attitude has been dead for decades. The scummiest NPC in Metro 2033 is an Ex-Con with a heart of gold. The whole thing is like an old propaganda movie. Perhaps intentional but in the end providing an incredibly blunt and one note story. By the way, All of the English text has been rewritten to make it even less "Russian" or even just for the hell of it ( In russian a person would be saying "Demons!", while the english would be "Hurry up guys, the flock has noticed us"). All of it is more alienating than relatable. It's weird and feels almost pandering.

Second: The term "Stalker", as it's used in Metro and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. , comes from a novel by the Strugatsky Brothers called "Roadside Picnic" (it's a great book, if you want to understand more russian Sci-Fi and where these games steal their ideas from, read it). In it there is no Chernobyl. The Zone is an aftermath of an unfortunate attempt by the Aliens to interact with humanity. The Aliens left and the Zone is all that's left. Stalkers are artifact hunters, traversing the Zone, avoiding the dangers and discovering mysteries.

Third: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (man, that name is terrible and hard to type, no it doesn't stand for anything) is a really neat game, taking direct inspiration from Roadside Picnic while twisting it a bit to get rid of the more fantastical parts. It's also way more "Russian", it looks like Russia, talks almost like Russia and just much more authentic and interesting of an experience and gameplay. Also it respects the original book in some very nice ways so if you'll read it beforehand you will enjoy the game more.

P.S.

Sorry for a long and rambling post but I haven't slept for close to 25 hours now so writing stuff is hard yet I was determined to give you a few pointers while you are on the Russian roll. Oh and the last thing: Singularity, while an alright game, is almost like a polar oposite of Metro in it's treatment of the setting, if Metro is a Soviet Propoganda movie, Singularity is an American anti-soviet one. It's so wrong on all points that it's almost offensive. But it's also so goofy that it feels like a pulpy comic book. So unless you took anything seriously from it, it's ok.

Thank you! Seriously. Very cool insight.

@zagzagovich: Wow, I'll have to read "Roadside Picnic". The Andrei Tarkovsky movie (which I don't know how I've gone this long without knowing it was based on a novel) "Stalker" is one of my favorites. Thanks.

I'm pretty spoiler sensitive myself, so I actually watch/read/play the things I don't want spoiled for me ASAP. If you are that upset over Avenger spoilers, you should have saw it a year ago. I have almost no sympathy for you.

If you want a fantastic Robert Downey Jr film....you simply cannot go wrong with Less Than Zero. His portrayal as Julian, an out-of-control Beverly Hills crack fiend is just brutal to watch.

Never thought I also see a scene where RDJ is busted by Andrew McCarthy about to suck a guy's dick to pay off a massive drug debt.

Ryan should have added a Sous Vide Supreme machine and a good vacuum sealer to his wedding registry. Once you try cooking sous vide, you never go back to just grilling your meat again. Tested opened my eyes up to the technique and I've never had a more tender or perfectly cooked steak. It can be incredibly inexpensive using a beer cooler and Ziploc bags. It'll even turn bargain bin steaks that are mostly gristle into something surprisingly tender.

@ryan@brad@vinny

Loading Video...

Just finish them with a super hot pan or grill sear instead of the blowtorch. Will's just trying to be flashy. You'll want to let them cool for a few minutes and pat them dry before searing so you can get the right Maillard crust texture without cooking the inside any further. The juices left over in the bag can be used to make an awesome sauce or to add extra flavor to a meal you're having later in the week.

Regarding STALKER: Patrick is wrong. The best and most fully realized STALKER game is Call of Pripyat. Shadow of Chernobyl is the most modded because it's the one that required the most work for modders to fix. Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat have had many ideas and fixes modders implemented in SoC put into the base games.

@scubasteve1974: That Sony press conference was not really for the consumers first rather for the developers first. By being for the developers it is ostensibly better for the consumers. It wasn't about the games. They acknowledged their mistakes and said here is how we are going to address it. It showed a lot of promise, because in a way they wanted to show that they do care about their gamer audience and their experience. That is something that Microsoft has seemingly gotten away from especially with all those rumors.

If you wanted the games, then wait for E3. Many of the games they showed at the press conference were more technical stuff that were meant to show what the PS4 could do, stuff that most people other than developers or people who know a lot of that technical stuff would not know.

I don't blame you for not enjoying the conference or "Playstation Meeting" I don't think that was for you. E3 should be though.

I love when Brad gets deep in a game hole such as with SC2 or DOTA. Possibly because it's one of the only times he sounds really excited about anything. Rivaled only by Viva Pinata, as also demonstrated in this episode. Man, Viva Pinata brings the enthusiasm out in Brad.

Nah, he still played a good bit of Starcraft until a few months ago. Talked about it a bit less but there wasn't as much to talk about with it. When Swarm came out, he certainly talked about it.

Buying consoles at launch is something I can thankfully resist completely. I'm a big video games fan but I tend to wait at least a year before buying the next console.

First they need to prove they have enough worthy games. Then I will consider buying.

With regards to Ryan's new corn de-silker, you can just microwave the whole thing pre-husking for 3-4 minutes per piece then chop off one end and the corn will slide right out with no silk attached. Enjoy the magic.

I'm going to laugh my arse off if every single console that comes out tanks because they let the current gen stagnate too long, and a large enough amount of people that play games have in the last few years moved on to PC (anecdotally I have, and know several people that have, and none of us will ever buy a console again now). That would be pretty amusing to say the least.
