Battleborn's steam sales (according to player population) are terrible, maybe the worst major launch title I've watched on steamcharts for years. It's a bummer, because I think it's a perfectly competent game that's been over-maligned due more to the recent Randy Pitchford PR fuckups than to the actual quality of the game. It's not up to Borderlands 2 quality by any means, but in my opinion there's a lot more fun to be had there than the gaming press is taking the time to investigate.

Yeah not surprising. The marketing and messaging of this game from Gearbox has been awful that no matter the quality of the game it was DOA and that's a shame.

And While I was not completely sold on the game when I played the beta, I thought with a bit more polish and a discount or two I could see myself purchasing it down the line, but it seems that there won't be anyone playing it by next month.

Regarding scaling to make hand-tracking work The Climb, all you would do, is scale the Camera-Rig up or down, to make all players the same height, it actually would be pretty simple.

Say I wanted everyone to be 6ft tall... I'd measure the players current height, (maybe ask them to stand up tall and press the trigger). Lets say they are 5ft tall. You'd just do something like this in Unity:

cameraRig.localScale = Vector3.One * 6 / 5;

Done! Your 5ft tall player is now 20% taller and has 20% more arm length; All players wil be the same size, and can climb the mountain with roughly the same reach.

Interesting and not surprising at all. I have seen zero hype for that game, and the reaction to the beta that I saw was largely negative.

Yeah in my now 7 weeks of experience with a baby, if you're changing diapers with any regularity, you're going to end up with poop on your hands. And you stop caring almost immediately.

@amyggen: Definitely, but on the flipside every person I've played a co-op match with since launch has seemed as though they were genuinely enjoying the game and excited about it. I think it's a massive case of PR fuckup. If they (by which, I suspect, I mean Pitchford) had never thrown their hat into the arena with Blizzard as an Overwatch competitor, nobody would be viewing the game as a multiplayer-focused team shooter which is obviously inferior to Overwatch.

The core experience here is really more like Borderlands meets Destiny meets League of Legends, though admittedly without the best elements of any of them. The co-op missions are like extended Destiny strikes, minus the best-in-class shooting but plus some fun melee mechanics and team synergy. The PVP feels like silly first person League matches, where everyone is running around popping Destiny supers and hopefully not taking it very seriously. I think there's a solid, enjoyable game to be found here that has been hugely penalized by terrible marketing.

It's fine if they don't like it, but..

Well it's possible that he doesn't know any of those 634 people. I'm sure I don't.

Yeah, I can't imagine ever putting any stock in user reviews.

Either:

  • A) the internet hate machine has decided they don't like a game because it has too many women or visible minorities or feelings in it, so it will be overwhelmingly negative for absolutely no good reason
  • or B) if it's any other game, the user reviews have a good shot of being "positive" or "very positive" even if it's a stunningly mediocre, unoriginal game because gamers have low standards and only downvote games for ideological reasons or if the game is entirely riddled with bugs

The masses are a bunch of idiots, so I don't know what I'm supposed to get out of letting me see the average of their opinions.

This show needs time stamps of the topics discussed in the show notes. Sometimes I just want to listen to the intro talk (which is getting too short for my liking) news, and emails. There is a growing list of topics I don't ever need to hear about again.

@matiaz_tapia: If you or anyone else on the concept art team have personal sites with more art I'd love to see it.

EDIT: I especially love the design of the main villain with the elongated limbs and asymmetrical design. Just love everything about that, kudos to whoever came up with it.

Now I am just theory crafting here, but.

It really feels like Gearbox is suffering from some major Alien:CM marketing backlash. And I am not talking about the obvious external backlash from media and players. But internal backlash. People, rightly so, shitted on them for promoting ACM the way they did. So, at some point the upset Gearbox team were like: "ok no more of that, we will just let the game speak for itself, screw the usual marketing overload, how about we try it". Except sadly it doesn't really work like that for a major title (that's not a runaway hit).

None of this may be true ofc, but that's how it feels from outside looking in.

Wow, this is genuinely impressive. I can't remember having ever seen a giantbomb post filled with so much prejudice and oblivious hypocrisy...is this satire, or did I miss a /s at the end? You manage to label anyone who disagrees with you negatively as belonging to extremely small ignorant minority groups while simultaneously labeling anyone who disagrees with you positively as belonging to extremely large ignorant majority groups. It must be difficult to be surrounded by such a magnitude of bigotry and idiocy in equal measure.

While I love Borderlands 1/2, I had zero faith in them being able to balance a multiplayer shooter. Class design/balance is incredibly difficult and you add the type of team dynamics that MOBAs have and you're probably going to end up with a mess.

Guys, please do yourselves a favor and stop promoting games like Clash of Dullards and Clash Buttrash. Will anyone need games journalists when all we have is mobile, free to play wale fishing boats? You are all smart enough to know that is where the industry is heading... your constant promotion certainly doesn't help. Again, the Clash games have gotten so much more coverage than so many other great games. Why?

Jeff's Thanksgiving pizza is a reality at Fellini’s Pizzeria on the east side of Providence.

Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and gravy on pizza crust. That sounds really good, if done right.

And the video review makes me hungry.

@jgzilk: This is a really tricky one I find myself considering after a lot of recent podcasts. At the end of the day, the giantbomb team are now more internet personalities than critical, informed game journalists, and the media products they're distributing are based heavily on their individual personalities and what they're currently enjoying/discussing. I don't mean that to be derisive in the slightest, it's more an objective statement about what 'giantbomb' the company is currently prioritizing/selling.

If you heavily disagree with their opinions on games and have no interest in some percentage of what they're discussing, then ultimately it comes down to whether you still gain enough enjoyment from their products to justify paying for them (if you're not paying then get a job hippy). Complaining and asking them to change their opinions/tastes in order to provide you more interesting discussion is in conflict with the fundamental nature of their product.

Man, I bet Vinny would have a field day with their audio cue system.

To me, the best part about "Top/Best/Worst X" lists isn't the lists themselves, but the people getting mad about what is or isn't on it or the category itself.

Strawberries and bananas are the best, so says I.

I'm trying to understand why Dan would want more grounded shooters but I just don't see it. Maybe it's the 10+ years I spent playing only WWII shooters because that was the only type of game developers were interesting in making after 1996. Maybe it's my love of Dead Space and all things cool and sci-fi, but I'm more than happy to go play Space Call of Duty and leave that "real CoD" behind. Titanfall, Infinite Warfare, Battlefield Space-Nam, bring 'em. Give me weird trippy homing bullets, dispersal lasers, jump jets, robots. I have shot enough Garands and m16s to last me a lifetime, I really don't have any urge to go back to that nitty gritty FPS wargame with the all too familiar stable of realistic rifles. Give me the FX490 Wave Breaker Spectral Rifle man, let me disperse some atoms through sonorhythmic displacement - bullets are for chumps.

Wow, I didn't realize how hated Dead Nation was. Me and my wife enjoyed the shit out of it and we played both the PS3 and 4 versions. It was kind of annoying how dark it was and the game is really short. We were really excited about Alienation until I saw that it had no couch co-op. Atleast Helldivers had that.

I'm quite puzzled by their (especially Dan's) complaints that the technology in COD has gone "too far out". When I saw that trailer I was astounded by how UNIMAGINATIVE this supposed far out future looks. Those scenes set on Earth look like they could be set in present day apart from some fancy skyscrapers and the now standard exosuits (the thing that REALLY stood out for me like a sore thumb were the CARS: they looked EXACTLY like present day cars, they didn't even get the sleek concept car treatment). This game just screams "It's LITERALLY COD only we're in space now! With robots!". Give me fancy laser guns and weird Dead Space/Mass Effect-like technology any day.

No offense to Jeff, but saying that The Climb is mediocre is meaningless considering he's playing it by cheating... the fact you have to control your grip with the triggers is what creates tension! Then as you get better at it, you're moving around faster and faster and it feels like your confidence/skills are slowly increasing.

It's like playing a shooter in god mode (no clip, no damage, infinite ammo) and judge the game based on that... it boggles my mind that a "professional" reviewer would think that's an okay way to experience a game.

Blizzard releasing games/betas to screw over other companies is far from a new thing. They've been doing it for years with WoW against other MMOs.

I'm with Jeff on CoD4 remastered. I don't want some weird half remake where they mess with the multiplayer. Just give me the entire original game properly updated to modern standards. Sure, bring some of the big modern features to it that they have added over the years and fix some stupid bugs that broke the game, but overall I just wanna play some Modern Warfare. Like, the later games gave you more stuff for prestiging, so I guess they could include that? But yeah just give me all the maps that were available in the original/all the DLC maps included with the game and make it a separate thang.

Drew brought up Halo 1's remastered edition which sucked because it didn't have the original multiplayer, which was like 75% of why I wanted the Anniversary Edtion/MCC, just give me the original game with modern trimmings and modest, sensible additions.

I have played TF2, not a lot (because I didn't like it very much). But to me Overwatch feels MUCH more like a UT, Quake kind of game. It's super fast paced and the characters feel like mini moba characters. It is by far the best FPS I have played since UT in 1999.

It is more than fair to critique their incessant coverage of a malignant piece of software. They are trapped by the design of it, as so many are. People are literally losing their jobs over these games. They have high end psychologists producing algorithms to determine the best way to ensnare people. I assume these guys kind of see the writing on the wall for their long term future, but it still warrants consideration... Is this what we want to look like? Are these the developers/ practices we wish to promote? If we all sit silently and worship at the GB altar, we fail in our role as part of the GB community. That is all.

The xbone controller on Windows 10 problem sucks. Most Unity engine games are broken with it at the moment. It's a driver issue that MS fixed briefly but the driver was causing other issues so they rolled back the update.
