Those Quake abilities sound like abilities from the Shadowrun game on the 360. @jeff@brad Might be a good option for a UPF. I highly doubt people are still playing it tho. You could still do bot matches maybe?

@xymox I'm pretty sure I remember hearing that Drew used to stand a bunch. But that was maybe in another studio and definitely before he had to man the video controls.

Ah yes. The Iron Galaxy Trio. One of my favorite Hanna Barbara cartoons. Adam Boyes with mastery over vapors, Dave Lang with the power to increase his size and mass at will, and Chelsea Blasko with the ability to fly and control gravity. He's not here but would Johnny V be Birdman in this equation? Some great guests for sure. These dudes crack me up every time. Glad to have Jeff back to bring some much needed salt and pepper to the steak that is the Bombcast. Maybe some butter too. What the hell am I even typing?

I really wish we could've gotten through this without bringing up Rami Ismali's article. Screw that guy. He wants to talk about patch cert when he couldn't get even basic fixes through Sony cert once. Say what you will about whether No Man's Sky delivers on peoples' lofty expectations, the dev team responsible plans to support it and implement as much cool stuff as their budget and fragile game engine can muster. I'm not denying that the cert process for patching games is convoluted. However as well as one could articulate how hard the process is, Vlambeer should put their money where the mouth is and service their damn customers. Maybe some indie devs just suck at programming...period. All I know is that Nuclear Throne first patch on PS4 is currently in cert for like the fifth time and I fully expect it to fail as it has failed for 8 months straight. But who knows, I might be eating my words in the next few days, or 8 months.

Thanks as always for the podcast. Apologies for the vitriol.

During the later part of the No Man Sky discussion the only thing i could think is that i would love if they hired a very pro-consumer editor

Yeah, for me the big problem is that they tend to make a lot of excuses and exceptions when they personally know developers, but on games where they don't personally know anybody they'll just hang it out to dry and say "it doesn't matter why it's broken, as a consumer I just want my game".

The difference is that No Man's Sky wasn't broken on release.

Really? Are you going to tell that to the people that bought the disc and don't get the day 1 update?

Or the people who bought it on the promise that even though rare, you could still find and see other people?

Or saying that it's out of their hands with all the things people "think" the game was going to be. That's pure bullshit, it was all 100% driven by marketing and vague developer statements specifically to give those ideas.

The fact that GB normally doesn't even look at Survival games at all, despite the massive audience. And they constantly say how they "don't get it" and think it's a waste of time. For the few that they do try they barely spend enough time to figure out the most basic of controls to look like idiots on a Premium-only stream. Yet here for a game that they have had the developers show them multiple times over the years they have on release night 2 multi-hour streams of the staff playing them and an hour of the Bombcast dedicated to it.

And you can't say it's only because it is a big release, because MILLIONS of people are playing ARK right now. And Rust. And Subnautica. And Dead by Daylight. And Minecraft. And H1Z1. And all of the others survival games that have the many of the mechanics in addition to way more depth and variety even in Early Access.

that's the issue i take with anything pro-consumer. it eventually ends up becoming a witch hunt with loads of supposed oppressed gamers crying out for developer blood. it gets blown way out of proportion and loses the plot entirely. it's just a needle swing hard in the opposite direction that doesn't help anyone.

sure there are other big survival games, but this one is ostensibly aimed at the masses. it would be foolish to think GB wouldn't cover it (e: i wouldn't consider jeff's stream official coverage of the game despite being on GB's youtube channel as it wasn't posted on the site). survival games in general are estoteric and niche, even the biggest ones. they are huge time sinks, as an outsider it seems like for fans of these games they're basically the only game they play for months on end.

i also feel a lot of people are listening to a different bombcast than i am. they repeatedly, particularly jeff, bring up their caveats about the game, its longevity, and how it sucks for the relative few who aren't online and can't get the full experience.

this isn't a black and white situation in any way.

I agree with you on this mostly because they don't have the time to put into it. They are huge time sinks. How long does it take someone on Ark to because self sufficient? How can you put a quick look at the very beginning of it and not get ganked or raided or people knowing their gamer tag and just being completely stupid during their stream?

Yes they are popular. Yes there is a crazy dedicated player base. But, just like Eve Online, they just don't have the time to commit.

I was kinda sickened by the lengths they went to defend No Man Sky. Like it can do no wrong.

"Its a small team, you cannot have that big expectations!" Well then don't sell it for 60 dollars and market it as if its the biggest and most unique game ever. There are games for 20 dollars with way more content on Steam, also survival open world games with procedural generation.

Also I think the entire marketing campaign for the game has been full of deceit. Like they were always very cautious about showing or even talking outright about the game. Every sentence has always been intentionally vague. And now we have caught Sean Murray outright lying. He said the game has multiplayer, two people met up and they cannot see each other. Its an outright lie.

@bugberry: "The differences between the planets being how much grass and what color is it." -Brad

That's not $60 worth of content. This isn't The Witcher 3, or Battlefield 4, or Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. This is an indie game being sold for full price. I will not give it the benefit of holding it to an indie game's standard when it's being sold for $60 retail. You don't get to have your cake and eat it too. With that said, I'm waiting for the PC release and I really hope it's an awesome game. I'm scared it'll get repetitive and boring fairly quickly however. No one will really know until it's out for a couple days and people can sink 20+ hours into it.

@rvone: If you read the first three paragraphs you would see I directly addressed your question there.

No Man's Sky is broken on release for multiplayer. It is broken on release for anyone not connected to the internet because this is not an online-required game. It is broken for those that are buying it based on the misleading marketing.

You really didn't, and you are inflating the term 'broken'.

Nothing like a full priced indie game to bring out the entitled, whiney gamers. Don't think the game is worth the price? Great, don't buy it. But pontificating endlessly and getting upset at other people for buying and enjoying the game? That's just sad.

It's pretty silly to expect them to have formed coherent opinions of NMS after only playing it for a few hours. I'm sure they're have more useful things to say by next week. As ever, buying games you're unsure of before critical consensus has settled down is kinda dumb.

I only use my Xbox for one game, but I can't help but think Jeff's issues with it are partly because he's not as familiar with the console? I own both current gen consoles and they feel largely the same to me as of this past year. The guide is definitely slow after boot up to cache, but fine after that. Also, instead of pressing the guide button, going to dash, and then left on d-pad, double tap the guide button to go straight to the guide.

Echoes my thoughts. I'm a preview member for Xbox One and while each release generally gets 4 out of 5 stars by other members, I continue to rate it a 3 but only because of the initial boot up slowness. While I find it unacceptable, it is fine after half a minute at most. After that, the UI is speedy enough. The overly negative chat primarily from Jeff that lasted a few minutes was awkward, including the dead silence from the developers on the podcast.

Rami Ismail of Vlambeer Games (Nuclear Throne, Luftrausers) wrote an enlightening article discussing Day 1 patches and the cert process for console games.

I mean, to make your life easier, you should probably view Giantbomb as the Entertainment Tonight of the games industry.

I know Boyes left Sony but man, I had to second guess that sometimes with his constant spinning.

Trying to convince everyone they don't actually want cross platform play. And GB crew just agreeing.

Just wish Jeff was as pretty as Mary Hart. Brad is a more handsome John Tesh.

I don't care who made a game. If I know I'm going to spend hours and hours playing it, then $60 is more than worth it.,

I would rather spend that then spend $15 on 4 games I'm playing for a few hours.

@cagliostro88: My issue is that whenever we talk about modern games having these patches that are huge and radically impact your gaming experience no one brings up the fact that at the launch of the XB1 consumers and media alike ripped that whole always online idea apart, but when you look at the modern gaming space if you're not always hooked up to the internet you'll run into some pretty big issues playing a lot of AAA releases. It's like built in DRM. Imagine someone doesn't have an online connection or has very stringent data caps and they put in NMS - what kind of experience will they get compared to someone that downloaded the patch? Is that fair? Is that O-K? Should we just say "well game development is hard" or what I've heard said before "well we should be happy they keep working on it even after it went gold." But is that continued workflow at the cost of people that won't be able to make use of it because of their particular circumstances.

I too would like them to explore these issues from the side of the consumer rather than the developer. Yah it's a small team, yah they had to work their asses off, but hey so did a lot of other people in order to earn the money to buy their game. Oftentimes I feel like the paying customer is the least important part of the equation at the very bottom of the totem pole. It really very often feels like we should all be happy we even get these games and shut up and just hand over our money.

Trying to make something big (and every game, not just No Man's Sky, is big in some way) work for everyone while executing on the initial vision and having a perfectly projected budget is almost impossible. You can iterate and iterate and iterate and iterate and iterate until the cows come home, but you eventually have to ship something, and you need to hit the biggest targets possible and try to fix what you can down the road.

if someone can't play, then someone can't play. It sucks, but that's what it is. The paying customer *as an individual* IS the least important part of the equation.

Damn this new numbering system... TO HELL. Seriously though... dates or bust.

I don't understand it either. The content of the bombcast is more relevant to the date the episode is released and not the order that they are released. Dates are much more appropriate in this situation.

About the last topic: Cross play between games.

Adam and Dave kept mentioning that it doesn't offer anything and brings convoluted menu's and solutions to games. Yet people seem to like the idea behind it. Apparently Rocket League implemented this recently. How is this implemented? Are you tied to a psyonic account or something? Is the crossplay as messy as it was described here? Is it possible to group up with someone using a different platform?

I tried Tap Tycoon on Jeff's mention, and now tried Egg, Inc. I don't quite agree with his assessment of the... goodness of the paid stuff. These incremental games are all about setting stuff up so it goes while you don't play, and then come back to an amassed wealth. Egg, Inc. limits that to two hours without checking in. After two hours, you don't get shit. You can pay 5 bucks to extend that, or spend a sizeable amount of the golden egg currency Jeff talked about to increase it by 6 minute increments. That's really shitty. Good game otherwise, though. I like the systems, and the premise of it. Shame that it has that paywall dragging it down, at least in my opinion.

And yeah, the comments for the audio and video versions should be merged somehow. Feelin' like a second-class citizen over here.

@onemanarmyy: I think that they ended up summing it up well. For something simple like Rocket League, it might be possible and fun. But when it comes to getting your friend lists assembled and chatting and stuff, it would be a pain.

Destiny is a good example - for me and my work friends, it was a chat room with shooting. What I wouldn't want to do is have to create a new friends list for that and then use a 3rd party voice chat app to talk.

I think people like the idea in the abstract without necessarily thinking about how much work it takes to get the connectivity beyond just game data working.

@thebooya: Yeah, why would you want a larger pool of players across platforms to play against. When I play rocket league on PC and see someone who's playing on a PS4 or Xbox One, I scoff and immediately Alt-F4 out.

Even if we don't get cross platform chat, game invites, etc, at least put us in the same pool for matchmaking and as the idea of cross platform grows, maybe next generation, every other bell and whistle could come along.

But hey, glad to see where your allegiances lie.

@tunacat: Just because it doesn't have a huge variance between it's locations doesn't mean it's less worthy. Not every game of the same price has $60 worth of levels or $60 worth of playable characters. For the people that like the kind of game NMS is, $60 is worth it to them.
