So weird that a lot of people think SteamWorld Dig was the first SteamWorld game. No one remembers SteamWorld Tower Defense.

Would just like to note to @jeff and @benpack after the brief e-mail discussion around FFXIV that you can jump right into the latest expansion now if you're willing to cough up a little extra dough.

With the launch of Stormblood they added "jump potions" you can purchase from the Mog Station (a.k.a the real money shop) There are ones that let you jump past all the story gating of ARR and Heavensward and get right to the new expansion. They also sell potions to get a specific combat class leveled up to 60. (which was the cap in the previous expansion)

They are however a tad pricey at $25 for the Main Story Skip and $25 for the Class leveling potion. Which would put you at $110 when you add in buying the complete edition of the game w/ the new expac so that's still probably a turn off but they do have options for people who aren't bothered by throwing a little extra money around to catch up.

That being said they also expanded their trial greatly so if you just wanna jump in and fuck around up to level 35 you can do that for free. Sorry for the wall of text! Just wanted to point this out though!

The 1991 Toyota Tercel was my first car and lasted fifteen years. There are times where I miss driving standard but all the fancy stuff in my 2013 Toyota Corolla make up for it.

I'm pretty sure they said the word "cool" close to a hundred times during this show. Just listen to the Destiny section alone.

There are more descriptive words out there!

Man that Forza take is a bummer. Project Cars wasn't doing it for me and Gran Turismo has been a hot mess since 4 so I was actually thinking about finally getting into Forza.

It is still really bizarre to hear them dismiss MMOs as this ancient thing that is no longer relevant, when Destiny is mostly adaptation of systems that have began appearing in MMOs in the past 5-10 years.

Like I have blindspots of genres I don't play, but I still have the context. The raids, public events, personal story quest, and many others are all pulled straight from modern MMOs. (That's not a complaint, I'm playing Destiny when it comes to PC. I love Bungie and that beta ran so well) There are less MMOs than there were during the boom, but the ones that come out and succeed are very good and have massive, active player bases. They are kind of the last place to go for people who want challenging group content that isn't a shooter or MOBA.

@brad@benpack "Automata Theory" is a field of study in computer science. When I got my CS degree, one of the senior classes was "Automata Theory". It's traditionally pronounced ah-tom-a-ta, as you would say "automaton", not ah-tow-ma-ta. I think Brad is spot on that who ever did the English localization and voice direction simply wouldn't know the accepted pronunciation the word either.

There are still good "arcade-style" shooters coming out in the present day, but they're often either under-the-radar releases, indie projects, and/or "overpriced" if you don't intend to take advantage of the near-limitless replay value that they offer.

Here are some games that could line up with your tastes, @brad, ranging from cheap to bigger-budget productions:

From time to time, I hear you guys talk about "bullet hell" games like they're some impenetrable masocore thing, but it's not like that at all! It's better to think of it as a different "style", in the same way that Street Fighter is different "style" of game than Guilty Gear. In fact, many bullet hell games can be quite approachable and forgiving, especially if played on easier difficulty settings. While there are more bullets on-screen, they're usually much slower and easier to react to than games with lightning-fast bullets.

That said, here are some great approachable bullet hell games:

One thing I will point out that all of these suggestions have in common: there's almost never any "campaign mode" or "story content" to speak of. These are arcade-style games, and they're designed to be played repeatedly with the aim of self-improvement, ultimately beating the game with as few continues as possible (ideally, none at all!), or to delve into the often insane depth of the scoring systems to challenge yourself for higher and higher scores. If you play these games with the mindset of a game with "runs" like Spelunky or Downwell rather than something that you play through once and then never touch again, it may make more sense.

Brad, Brad. Brad? Brad. Please stop insisting that the Switch doesn’t have any games released for it, we’re not in March anymore, there are over 100 games out for it. Are you asking for exclusives? There’s a bunch of those. Indies? Also plenty of those so far. There are also some bad releases, like any other platform. It’s got plenty of games for a seven month-old console, please stop being so derisive.

Casserole in French means pan! That all it means. Thus cooking something in such a pan has ZERO transitive property on what it is called. A cobbler is a cobber! A lasagna is a lasagne! A tuna casserole is an abomination - not because of the pan, but because it is a gross ingredient casserole.

Brad: "Its called 'SpeakerHat'"

Jeff: "Shit. Why didn't I think of that"

See Jeff? You just don't have that kind of savvy corporate instinct. That's why you'll never be a bigshot running a dummy corporation that's clearly a front for some kind of Mafia, like "Atari" has to be now :)

(for real though, I bet they are. Like the Gizmondo or Infinium Phantom people. Its been awhile since some shifty, shady, obvious money-laundering operation decided to try to fool people they were legit by using a "video game company" as their public face)
