Giant Bombcast 55/2015

This week, Simon says "Bleed... and then listen to our chatter about Dan's adventures in San Angeles, all about The Order, the Kirby curse, award-winning middleware, the magic of unaffiliated local TV, and the many endings of Red Dead Redemption. OK, you can stop bleeding now."

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

Demolition Man is very loosely based on Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. The main character is John the Savage and the San Angeles city is similar to the World State in the novel. Brad knew something was up.

Birdman is a great movie, but I can guess why Alex doesn't like it. I don't know if the Bombcast dudes would like it. Whether or not the Birdman is the Hannah Barbara Birdman is not really important to the movie. And also Micheal Keaton has said the character he plays is nothing like him so I think the connection is written in for similar reasons to why there's a movie about a door that goes into John Malkovich's head. It has similarities to reality, but isn't actually real. Whatever that's called.

It's good Dan watched Demolition Man finally. That's a fun movie. And yes, it was written originally for Sandra Bullock's character to be his daughter, but for whatever reason (probably test screenings? I forget) they made it ambiguous instead.

I don't understand the email calling Red Dead Redemption's "final" ending the Hollywood ending. Like that ending isn't the bad guys getting away with it. John fought so hard for his family to have a normal life and that got screwed up by his death by the law. John's son, Jack, hunting down the bastard that murdered John makes Jack a murderer and an outlaw. Sure the bad guy dies, but it essentially costs Jack his whole life as well. He is pretty much following in his father's footsteps which again, is what John tried so hard to work against.

That ending is one of the most depressing I can think of. When the title card came up I just stared blankly at the screen. The irony of the word "redemption" coming up after that scene hit me really hard. And I still don't know if that is what I was supposed to feel. Like most people describe the ending as super badass, right? Am I missing something or do people just have a giant revenge hard-on?

I agree with your assessment. I found the ending to be tragic. Horribly tragic. Throughout the game, John Marston is fighting to have his family live as normal a life as possible, and he wants his son to not be like him, to grow up and have a better, brighter future. Everything you do it to try to secure that future and to return to your family. At the end, that is shattered. The poison of being an outlaw has infected the bloodline of your family and your son is now a carbon copy of you. It's just absolutely black. If anyone thinks this is a good ending for John and his family, especially his son, than I wonder if we even experienced the same story. In the end, it is good that the people who used John are given their comeuppance, but at the same time, John would have never wanted it to be perpetrated by his son, not in a million years.

I have no idea if we still need the spoiler tags for a five year old game, and a super popular one at that, but there you go. :D

I'm the type of person that likes the "dark" endings, so I enjoyed how it all wrapped-up.

I'm also totally on board for this samari-based Red Dead sequel.

@mr_creeper: Oh don't get me wrong, I enjoy dark endings.

I wouldn't say they are pleasurable in a normal sense, but I find that any ending done well can be satisfying, whether it's a schlocky Hollywood happy ending or a dire, grim noir style ending. Again, as long as it is done well.

I think Red Dead Redemption's story wrapped in a satisfying way. But I wouldn't say I enjoyed it or jumped out of my chair cheering. It was contemplative and left a lot for the player/viewer to think about. I think that that was what made it successful.

All I know is that I do not want a GTA 6 as Rockstar's next (major) release. I'd love if they give RDR the treatment they did GTA V on it's PC, PS4, and XONE releases, that'd be an instant purchase.

That being said, a Seven Samurai (and other similar films) inspired Rockstar game sounds sensational.

Bummer about that Phantom Dust news. Xbox is doing next to nothing to appeal to non-dudebro gamers this gen. I guess they're just trying to double-down on that base in their desperation to not die an early death against Sony?

Well meh! I'm hardly going to feel bad about snubbing you this cycle, Xbone, when you so blatantly snub demos with more eclectic tastes than sports games, fps, and AAA actioners.

Inside and Cuphead looked kind of appealing at E3, but there's no way in hell I'm spending even a discounted $350 price just for that.... And this new backpedaling on Phantom Dust only serves to reinforce that instinct all the moreso.

That $700 price tag for a living room PC just to stream to.... @drewbert

Here's my $300 build that I put in the living room, also for playing ripped DVDs from my NAS.

I threw Binding of Isaac at it just to play with it and the CPU never went over 20%. Just turn the theme to Windows Basic, which turns off that horribly optimized Aero taskbar crap and a ton of resources are freed up.

Though waiting to see if Razer can come through on their promises to get it right with the Forge TV then that may be the best way to go. I'm honestly surprised that Valve is pushing ahead with this living room PC thing since Android alternatives are showing up to do the same job cheaper and possibly better.

Glad I don't base my playing decisions on reviews. The Order reminds me a lot of Ryse. Decent enough but not amazing gameplay, though the setting and world are right up my alley. These are my popcorn movie games rather then Call of Duty or Gears of War, just as I'd rather watch Centurion rather then Demolition Man (which is better then most of the crap Jeff peddles).

I'd love to see Brad and Dan do a play through of Zelda 2. I feel like Dan's going to do it anyway at some point, so might as well do it on the site! I myself haven't played the game either and I probably won't, but I'd love to see a complete play through.

Seeing John's son travel down the same dark path into hell as his father was extremely effective and haunting.

There was an extra ending in RDR??? What the... I remember going to the lawmen's office in the city when I finished the game, to get some revenge, and being somewhat dissapointed nothing happened. I figured it was just a way to finish up all the sidequests and collectibles. How did I miss an actual mission :(

@bisonhero: The spoilers end at roughly 2:45:00. They still talk general things after this (like potential sequel ideas) but there are no more spoilers.

@tomba_be: Like they said on the cast, it's not an actual mission. It appears on your map as a Mysterious Stranger encounter (I think that's what they were called?). And it's just by some random river in Mexico, so it's not something you would expect.

I don't understand your point. Dan points out that Minish Cap is underrated, which I would agree it is. No one ever talks about it when mentioning Zelda games and he thinks it's a very good game. This, by definition, means that it is underrated.

Also, that e-mail calling the handheld Zeldas mediocre? Link's Awakening is legit my favourite in the series. The tightness of level design and world layout and responsiveness of everything, it felt like a perfect game when I was a kid. The licensed CD-I games are legit objectively bad though.

@dan_citi: They definitely wouldn't do GTA VI next. They only ever did semi-annualized releases of the game back in the day. Just going down the list of IPs:

  • GTA? Nope. V is still getting updates and supposed to get story DLC, as well as Rockstar saying they like to have a good amount of years to craft everything.
  • RDR Sequel? Maybe. It did out perform and was a huge critical hit.
  • RDR Port? Probably not. They said the studio that did it had issues with PC. But who knows? Maybe someone like Bluepoint could do something?
  • LA Noire? Max Payne? No. Pretty sure those IPs won't be back for awhile simply based off of sales figures, the long and costly development cycle of both, and critics/fans' disappointment.
  • Agent? Manhunt? Table Tennis? Nope. 1 because it's been in development hell & is pretty much dead. 2 & 3 'cause those aren't really the type of games Rockstar makes anymore it.
  • Bully? Most likely no, but my heart refuses to acknowledge it.
  • Midnight Club? I could definitely see it in development, but don't really know if Rockstar would still do a straight racing game again. Especially with the amount of competition going on in the genre.

I'm putting my money on a bunch of GTA Online DLC & a story-based DLC for GTA V, then a new Read Dead, and probably a new IP.

here is my big question about Daylight Saving Time. Why doesn't all of America simply agree to move to DST and NEVER change back. Like....why is the need to drop back in November? We could all just change to DST and we would still keep our time in relation to the time zones of the world....it's just that we would permanently stay in DST. Then in the summer it would still get dark after 8M....yet in the Winter it would only get dark as early as 6:15 PM or so.

What are the drawbacks to this?

@dbene: Our state legislature is trying to change to permanent DST. The biggest hurdle with not doing a time change in the winter is children's bus pickup time in many areas would be pitch dark in the middle of winter. It's a pretty big safety concern for rural areas of our state.

On the flip side of the coin, Arizona stays on standard time all year. This is a power and heat issue, in Phoenix when its 110-120 outside you want the sun going down as early as possible to reduce cooling costs(people getting home right in the middle of the heat of the day is a big concern) as well as being comfortable. Changing them to permanent DST would probably be a no-go as they simply don't observe DST to begin with. You could fix that by drawing them in to another time zone but that gets kinda funky too.

There's no good one size fits all solution. Except Swatch Internet time.
