Ooooh boy, I've been waiting all week for this.

By the way, have they turned off squad auto-leveling? It might be an idea since it's pretty darn useful to ensure that you have NPC companions who have good tech skills for unlocking crates and terminals and stuff.

Been replaying this along with these guys and I'll be interested in seeing how Alex deals with the combat system... Forgot just how terrible it is compared to the rest of the series.

I love how much of an open mind Alex is coming in with. Mass Effect is such a special universe/series to me, but there are definitely silly things and shortcomings you sort of just have to accept at face value. It would be so easy to nitpick the games, especially ME1, to death. Being able to let those things slide to appreciate what it does right is the key to enjoying the games, and I'm really happy Alex seems like he is coming in wanting to invest and enjoy the ride.

I always used a custom one and this one is not that bad either, I don't see what the problem is at all, it's a decent character creator in my opinion.

Hey, I know this has probably come up in the comments for previous videos, but it still feels like it's worth saying again, since it was actually discussed in the episode:

You'll never run into a situation where there's a Charm option with no Intimidate counterpart, or vice versa, so you should probably only invest in one or the other. Since you're playing mostly Paragon, I'd go with Charm.

And you should definitely keep it maxed out, if you want to get a lot of use out of it--every chance you get to put a point into Charm, do it. You'll still have plenty for the other skills.

fellas you called your yakuza series Beast in the East, why do you insist on shoehorning the name of the game into this series

I guess what I'm saying is, I'm Commander Shepard and this is my least favorite name on the website

Intimidate is so much more fun though!

The jerk/unnatural facial movement is not so prevalent with the default models.

@gkhan: Eh, it depends on the situation. My favourite Shepard was about two thirds Paragon, one third Renegade - I built a personality for her and just roleplayed, instead of picking things based on whether they were P or R - and I got a fair bit of use out of the better Intimidate options when they were available - which was surprisingly often for only having the Renegade bar about half full - but I liked a bunch of the Paragon ones too.

Man, I can't believe how shit the PC hacking minigame is compared to the Xbox version. The Xbox one was trivially easy from what I remember.

In your JOURNAL you can tab across to the ASSIGNMENTS tab - you've probably got a few open side quests there. When you guys were confused about what updated when you scanned your first planet, it would have updated the assignments tab.

Same with the Codex, there's secondary codex entries on the tab over.

A little tip from me is too save a lot. The checkpoints in this game can be quite brutal.

This has encouraged me to also fill my 'gamer hole' of never playing thru ME. I had only really just created my FemShep and said goodbye to Jenkins. I'm so glad that Alex wants to dig into the conversation options. I'm finding that to be my favorite parts of the game. Now, on to the show!

BTW +1 to "Alex Effect"!

I'm glad they turned the film grain off, it really did hurt the video quality.

Also - and I really DO love the film grain in this series - the effect looks terrible on a 4k TV for some reason. I played the games many times, but as soon as I started up ME1 on a new TV, I had to switch it off, it's just way more pronounced. And I do have my TV calibrated and have all the post-processing off in the TV settings. Playing on One X via backwards compatibility by the way, so the game obviously still runs in 1080p.

I love the Mako and exploring planets or scanning them. As a sci-fi fanatic the idea that you can just land and explore multiple planets was insane, especially in 2007/8. Sure a lot of the objectives were similar but it felt really cool to have a pretty sizable galaxy to explore. I think I did 100% of all ME games except Andromeda (still like that one but didn't have time to do 100%) and all of them were a blast. Like 8-10 years later one of my dream game ideas happened (NMS) but I'm still happy I experienced the masterpiece that is the ME Trilogy. I hope someday we'll get another space opera game or game series from any dev.

Alex, thank you so much for the Vince McMahon "She's gonna... She's gonna be a Spectre!"

Huh, I think this Shepard looks way better than default FemShep. I think they improved her model in the later games but it always looked kinda off to me, at least here. Plus I like seeing people's custom characters, makes it feel like I'm watching "Alex's ShepShep" in action rather than just anyone else's.

@vinny@alex Medi-gel and omnigel are separate things. Go hog wild.

Also, you can use a sniper-scope-type thing in the Mako by clicking in the right stick while you're holding LT.

Aww, they were so close to triggering the "infamous" sex scene with the consort. You know, the one that made Fox News talk about the "seXbox?"

Also, I'm pretty sure you can't curve powers in Mass Effect 1?

You might have covered this already but;

1. Those licenses you can buy let more stuff show up in the store.

2. You can also break unwanted items down into Omni-gel instead of selling them. I only played the XBOX version, so I never saw the PC hacking mini-game, but it seems like it sucks, so the Omni-gel might be useful for just skipping it. Plus you need it to repair the Mako.

@flstyle: I think they said Alex is playing with a gamepad, which is making the cursor move left and right when he presses up on the stick. Or he's getting confused by pressing the stick in the toward the center of the rings instead of just up. Using the keyboard arrow keys is much easier.
