Metal Gear Scanlon: V - Part 10

According to Drew's profile they have over 10 more hours of MGSV in the can, so it'll be a while until they can take any advice ;)

Anyways, solid episode.

I LOVE how Drew looks like he's ready to punch Ryckert at the drop of a hat in this episode. He looked so irritated with the back seat gaming!

Well this wouldn't be a metal gear scanlon without some false information from Dan :P the powerful stuff sure is just a "story thing" xD

There is plenty of stupid in this episode, mainly in the form of misinformation. Even if they did figure out the container was the thing, Drew couldn't do anything with it anyways, so lose-lose for everyone.

Can't help but think that in truely idiotic moments like that, Jason should chime in to save us all from going grey early.

Otherwise not too bad an episode. Some cool stuff does indeed happen.

Yeah, there was a weapon in the back of that vehicle he could have gotten. My favorite of the missile type weapons personally.

Love the bit around 27 mins when Dan's bad advice stopped Drew getting a weapon that would have made this mission a hell of lot easier. If Dan shut his mouth and Drew played it as he was going to (which he relies on Dan's lack of knowledge waaay too much) he would have had a better experience.

I still get the feeling that Drew knowing how long an experience this game is is motivating him to rush this game and not work things out for himself.

I can't begin to tell you how many missions I died because D-Horse jumped down a ravine and killed Big Boss. I would have main missions all but wrapped up and looked around for extra prisoners or resources to extract and then D-Horse would jump, Boss would die and the mission would start over completely. Wish D-Horse was a little less fearless.

hmmm, i didn't know all this happened. I shut down the transfer pump down then planted C4 all over the oil/water separator (no one calls in "oily" in the environmental or petro field) left the base, blew it up and mission complete. Never had to deal with the walkers

Yeah okay. I don't think you need to pick it up to unlock it in development. It just ticks of an objective and makes the mission easier + you can keep running around with it after the mission as long as you don't go back to the ACC.

It's not like it would have been a huge deal if Drew got it, but it would just have been a fun moment that was ruined because Dan didn't let Drew explore.

Drew: "I don't think they even knew I was here..." He immediately gets spotted.

The comic timing of this series is amazing.

Glad to see there's yet another episode where Dan leads Drew astray due to straight up bad info. It's almost comical at this point. I'm just gonna say it. I think MGScanlon V is bad and I wish you'd do a demo derby every week instead or something. Or bring in someone who actually appears to have played this game instead of Dan - he says he's played it but I don't fucking believe him because he knows literally nothing about this game. Which is fine if Drew wasn't constantly falling back on his "advice".

The FAKEL grenade launcher is a good investment. Later on you can mount it under your assault rifle if you have the slot for it ( After unlocking weapon customization)

Tho it might be the same for other grenade launchers...At least you can upgrade the fakel to shoot different grenade types.

Drew: "Was that the one [truck] that Miller was talking about with something cool in it?"

Dan: "He said it's just carrying something real powerful."

Drew: "Hmm, did I blow it up?"

Dan: "I don't think there...I don't believe there's anything you can retrieve there."

@kippers: Last episode Jason mentioned the entrance to the lab in the base and Dan told him not to spoil things for Drew.

@oni:I keep starting these episodes and then getting 15 minutes in and turning them off. For some reason this particular series is just more frustrating than silly/fun. I GO INTO EVERY VIDEO WITH SUCH HOPE.

But seriously, the Riot SMG is so so bad and the Tranq pistol is so so good.

Oh Dan: Just because you did not see/do something does not mean something was not there, you actually caused Drew to not get something by telling him wrong information. He would have checked it out if you had not pushed him away.

@drewbert Do you feel like your doing these missions for any reason, or just doing missions? Skipping all the tapes and having breaks does it just feel disconnected to you?

With the atmosphere Drew is experiencing this game in and the pressure of playing it for an audience, I don't see any way that he'll come away having enjoyed the narrative. There are a metric fuckton of tapes that have tiny bits of important story beats buried in minutes of exposition. You sort of need to dedicate yourself to listening to that stuff if you want the full takeaway. Also Dan isn't not helping, he's actively giving misinformation. It's a dense fucking game and Dan has only played it once, as opposed to the other games he has clocked multiple times, so it's understandable and not really Dan's fault. I'm just saying that this whole thing isn't really built to be played with haste.

I haven't even played this game yet and it was obvious to me that there was something very important to retrieve. I don't understand how these guys don't know it, or, if Drew is supposed to be playing himself, why does Dan tell him not to check?

How does Dan drink so much soda and beer and not weigh 300 pounds?

If Dan just defaulted to saying "play how you want to play" when Drew asks him some questions, everyone would have a better time. Drew has great instincts. He should trust them.

I don't know how Drew gets all those head shots. He's a really good player and fun to watch.

I lost it when drew blew up the supply truck with the rocket launcher in it and dan said "there was nothing in there". Hopefully they won't blow it up again when they get to mission 34 which is the same mission just on a higher difficulty.

If drew wants to extract containers and vehicles he should really look at the requirements for them because he's going to need stuff.

Drew is going to have to get over the whole not doing side missions thing because at some point the upgrades are going to get so expensive that the story missions won't cover the expenses anymore and he'll have to do the side missions if he wants to keep upgrading stuff.

If you keep bringing dudes back to the base the game will eventually start letting people with the lowest stats go. So there's really no reason to not always be fultoning dudes.

@quantris: Not so much for the misinformation stuff, but I think it'd legitimately be a fun change of pace to add Brad and/or Jeff to the mix for an episode here or there. I don't need or want them to replace Dan, but it'd just be fun to get several people on there with different play styles who can also chat idly while Drew concentrates.

@superjoe: Dude, I would absolutely listen to a community podcast where they play the Beastcast's corrections music and correct every piece of misinformation in this series. Not so much because it frustrates me to hear it but because that just sounds hilarious in the same way that the Kojima tracker is.

Guys I have something to confess: I really hate "Maneater", like even before Drew and Dan made it tiresome I really got to hate that song through MGSV.

Rather than Kojima tracker, there should be goober/goob tracker.

At this point the number of times Dan and Drew have said it must be higher than Kojima's credit count.

Drew, you might want to interrogate dudes more often. You can get useful intel about non-goobers and items. You may also want to go into cover more often as well; instead of just crouching behind objects, actually press up against them. It'll make you harder for enemies to spot.

Well...at least @Drewbert did some really cool action-guy stuff this episode.

If drew was using the tranq pistol instead of the shitty horrible oh my god please stop because it sucks so bad stun smg he'd have been able to sleep that guy silently then done the same to the other. Zero risk, maximum efficiency.

Damn you dan for making drew play with such an inferior awful loud, stupid, weapon. lol But then maybe I'm more just annoyed it encourages a less stealthy play style which I guess has never been drews thing ah well.

metal gear scanlon is the series that made me subscribe and really get in to giant bomb, so it feels bad to say this, but i'm done. it's too frustrating to watch this installment.

dan is constantly telling drew wildly incorrect information and steering how he plays. it goes against the entire stated purpose of the series and neuters the most compelling aspect of it! watching drew experience the games in his own way as a first-time player, experimenting and comprehending and reacting to all these crazy systems interacting used to be wonderful.

i don't understand how dan played so much of this game and yet fails to understand basic things, but that's beside the point. if he would just let drew play the damn game and stop trying to influence him (without even realizing it, it seems) it wouldn't be an issue AND we'd get the hilarious moments when dan learns something new and beats himself up over it.

i know i'm far from the first to say any of this.

The thing Dan is thinking about where they pronounce missile correctly is The Hunt for Red October. Dan commented on it in the Films and 40s podcast where they watched it.

Drew should really question what Dan says more often rather than implicitly trusting his input. Listen to what Miller and Ocelot have to say! They're not just telling you stuff for no reason, "I think it's like a 'Blow these guys up due to a story type thing" shut up, Dan. That whole 'what's in the circle' portion was excruciating to watch too for the same reason. Other than that this was a fine instalment.

Why is everyone so frustrated? This was an exciting episode! Who cares if he missed a weapon?

@rethla: Dan seems to always read the comments to videos he's in, so I'm sure he'll catch it.

@alexdelia: he also made drew hunt for an intel file for like 10 minutes in a mission with no intel files, even though it was clearly marked CONTAINER on drew's map, he chose to ignore it and make him keep looking, as if it would be hidden somewhere.

all dan does is break up the flow of the game when he tries to help.

In this series, Dan has become the equivalent of a siri that tells you things before you ask. The result is a dumbing down of Drew's play. He doesn't figure out anything because he is fed [mis]information constantly.

That being said, I'm still enjoying it :D

I guess I care because I wanted to know what was in the truck.

I hope I don't sound too negative. It's more about wanting to help Drew play, I guess and want him to do as well as possible with the game.

Maybe it sounds silly but I'm emotionally invested in this game after the entire series with Dan and Drew, so I care about it.

I can see how these comments might sound more negative then maybe intended.

By the way, what was up with all the images in the helicopter? That stuff was awesome and I'm glad they shoes it on the video.
