Quick Look: Arcade Archives: Round 06

Does Jeff keep buying these because Hamster keeps releasing them or is it the other way around? Either way, here's the latest batch.

Sit back and enjoy as the Giant Bomb team takes an unedited look at the latest video games.

Jeff explained Mahjong correcty. It's a rummy style "card" game for 4 players. I play it often.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahjong

The game in this collection (that we all know) is often called "Turtle" or "Mahjong solitaire"; it uses the tiles from Mahjong. Other than that, it's unrelated.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahjong_solitaire

And like with most "card" games, there are a ton of different variations based on where you are playing and who you are playing with. Traditional Chinese Mahjong is very similar to rummy. American Mah Jongg (also called NMJL, or Jewish Mah Jongg) is like the bastard child of rummy and hearts.

Yeah, there are tons of differences between different variations. Chinese versions usually have bunch of extra tiles compared to what I usually play, which is Riichi Mahjong - the Japanese variation. Not even getting into house rules and whatnot.

Years of looking into shady arcade Mahjong games have taught me not to trust people who know Japanese Mahjong.

I absolutely adore these types of "we're just going gonna sit down and play a bunch of old shit" videos.

@yummytreesap: I swear to god that he did, and not only that, he played it with/at Dan before. Are we from some alternate reality where this game came out earlier and was already in one of these Arcade Archives videos?

Maybe! I don't explicitly remember it as being from an Arcade Archive video—I've watched GB play so many old games by this point that my memory is fairly fuzzy—but I swear this happened. I must find it.

I'm sure @jeff has researched it himself since recording this, but Gaplus was also known as "Galaga 3," not "Galaga '88."

"Galaga '88" — the next in the series — came out a few years later in the arcade, later arriving on the TurboGrafx as "Galaga '90."

So, the Galaxian/Galaga timeline is:

• Galaxian

• Galaga

• Gaplus/Galaga 3

• Galaga '88/Galaga '90

Then sundry sequels/remakes/"arrangements" that I lost track of.

Has Jeff played The Legend of Kage on this site before? I swear I've seen it in the past and I don't really know of any other video game site that I'd see it on, so this would be my best guess.

(also the first music is better)

I'm 99% sure that he's played the Famicom version on a livestream at one point...

I've got some Black Bamboo, but I keep it in a large container. You do not want that stuff in the ground, grows all over the place, invasive.. Also, it is related to the grasses.

I used to be obsessed with Legend of Kage as a kid. I had a childhood friend who had this game and pretty much every single time we visited I demanded to play it first for a few years there.

Square-Enix also released a Legend of Kage 2 for the DS. It was a pretty decent action game. Several playable characters, tons of moves and spells, huge feeling levels with lots of verticality. The game also felt really long. And I think the bosses were pretty brutal.

Do people actually think Volleyball is difficult? I always sucked at sports in school and I sucked at serving but the actual play itself i found easier than any other sport in school, even won the school tournament.

We really need a Kunio-kun sports based livestream/video on this site. Also I love whenever soccer is mentioned Jeff twitches up and something along the lines of "what, no ones talking about that what". But anyway I still need to play that kunio-kin hockey game.

@danryckert You were right about unlocking a 3rd costume in Tekken. If you 100% the Galaga(?) game in the beginning, you unlocked Devil Kazuya and could select it by pressing start.

There was this gnarly Kunio-kun PvP brawler game that played kind of like an NES Power Stone. It controlled like River City Ransom, but it was an arena fighter with multi-tiered arenas like in Bio-Freaks and shit like that. It felt pretty progressive and played kinda well, didn't really see that kind of game in that era.

Quebec (that's what we use in Canada I dunno if this one is different), Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu.

Funny, I was the exact same way, but with SERVING. I was an unathletic and unassuming punky kid who put in minimal effort needed to pass... especially in gym.

But once I rotated into serving position, I would routinely get aces until we won. At best, the most athletic/showy/ballsy dude on the other team would dive on the hard floor and get a hand on the ball, but basically never keep it in play. I'd hit it so hard, and at such an angle, it was basically impossible for them.

In my head it was as easy as "ok, I'm tall, I'm basically looking down over the net. Toss the ball in the air and just punch the ball towards the gaps between people." And I found it remarkably easy to make that happen. The school did a "Candy Cane Tournament" all December every year, and people got pretty invested. Pretty hilarious when you have jocky football and basketball players suddenly looking at you with puzzlement and probably at least some respect. That candy cane was probably the sweetest one I've ever tasted.
