Man. Brad gets really close to spoiling some stuff near the end of this, and also, it astounds me when people play like that or how Jeff describes. When you have all these awesome tools like skylines and Vigors and tears, why are you just walking around shooting people in the face like you do in every other game? Why aren't you lifting a guy up with Bucking Bronco and then throwing a fireball at him? Why aren't you grabbing guys with Undertow and throwing them into the air and shotgunning them like a skeet shoot? Why aren't you riding the skylines and opening up tears to rocket automatons and then pouncing on distracted enemies?

I DON'T GET IT.

First of all, why would you watch a QL for Infinite DLC without having finished the game? To your second point, Brad didn't take any of the salt infusions so he was pretty limited as to vigor usage. That bucking bronco and devils kiss combo you mentioned probably would have bottomed out his salts to kill one guy.

@president_barackbar: I've finished the game. It was just crazy how close he got to spoiling the ending, but the other guys kept pulling him back from it. Kind of tense. I don't think finishing the game is a prerequisite for watching a quick look of DLC that has nothing to do with the story and is all combat-focused, though. If you didn't pick up Infinite and now you're watching this because hey why not, it could convince you to buy the game; I don't know. Why spoil the ending for no reason here? But anyway, that wasn't a big deal to me. It was just a weirdly tense moment.

And yeah, he didn't have much in the way of salts and they're kind of impractical sometimes, sure, but still, you can use the skylines and hooks and open tears all day long without using a single depletable resource. And besides, Elizabeth will usually just toss you more salt or health if you start to run out. I guess I just hate watching people play it as blandly as possible, ignoring all the fun and crazy options it gives you, and then complain about how bland the combat is. If you're playing it like that, then it's only bland because you have a bland play style.

I had the same graphical issue. Setting high quality light shafts in the ini fixed it, though took a slight fps hit. In the file "C:\Users\[name]\Documents\My Games\BioShock Infinite\XGame\Config\XEngine.ini" search for "UseHighQualityLightShaftRendering=False" and change to true.

The game doesn't encourage any of it. The combat isn't that exciting, and the story bits are all most people are playing for, so you find the quickest most effective means of progressing. Unfortunately the game never puts you in any situations where just blasting fools in the face isn't the most effective solution. A lot of shooters suffer from this same issue, and it's why so many of them are boring as hell.

On a side note, I was ready to dismiss this DLC as soon as I heard about it. After seeing this, maybe I'll give it a run. After all, I already bought it. Not like there's much else to play this week.

Remember that they all played as a Soldier in ME2, ignoring the manic fun of the Vanguard. Patrick and Ryan were finally able to give up their prejudice of fun with ME 3, at least.

People generally gravitate towards the simplest solution that works, in shooters. If the game doesn't require or encourage a certain play style, lots of people won't just choose to make things more complex for themselves.

I opened tears a lot to help myself in combat, and I occasionally used the crow vigor, but mostly just ran around and shot dudes. I'd only really use the skylines when they were necessary for survival (like against the giant metal dudes), or when I needed to get to another platform for ammo or whatever.

The main game on 1999 mode hasn't been all the difficult, but now that I'm at the very end where you take control of Songbird, it's a little more difficult. I lost about seven times so I just quit for now. I have to make use of what I have, and that moment can be easier or harder depending on what you have I assume. As for this, I don't really want to play this, but I do want to return to Rapture, so I'll get that DLC.

Apparently there are audio logs that you can find during the Horde mode from the Luteces' that explain the story some more.

Eventually we're going to move past audio logs as a story telling device, right? Because I'd really really like that that happen.

There's a difference between encouraging the use of a mechanic or play style and requiring use of it. The game doesn't require you to play in any specific way, and you can fault the game for that if you want, but if you're just looking at every combat encounter as an obstacle to get to the next story beat and trying to take the path of least resistance, then you're not going to have a fun time even if the game requires you to use certain mechanics.

BioShock Infinite is a shooter. The combat is the main mechanic of the game. If you're going into it wanting to bypass all the combat and get to the next story beat, that's not the game's fault. I wanted to experiment with all the powers and the skylines and all the other crazy mechanics of the game. I wasn't looking at enemies as something to put down efficiently and move on; I was looking at them as the subjects of my experiments.

You can toss people in the air, incinerate or electrocute them, turn them into an ally, use dangerous roller coasters mid-battle to escape from or gain an advantage over enemies, or even rip tears in the space-time continuum to pull in help from other dimensions. That's very exciting to me.

Just because they don't force you to engage with every single mechanic (read: the necessary freedom to allow people to develop wildly different play styles) doesn't mean it's boring or bad. It just means that a lot of people chose not to engage in all the incredible things that make the game thrilling to play simply because there were more efficient ways to deal with enemies. If it's not fun, who cares if it's more efficient?

BTW guys, Irrational's Community Manager has stated that both parts of Burial at Sea will be worth $15 each, so if you buy the season pass, you save $10 and get this for free, assuming you wanted both chapters (Which I do).

Fuck some of you guys, Bioshock Infinite's combat was some of the best I've played and I love shooters. Hard gave me plenty of reason to use powers and this game really just perpetrated the recent trend of, "if you care about gameplay, bump it up." It seems like a bunch of people who don't play FPSs decided to play this one and critique it baselessly. I had the same experience Jeff had watching this and remembering how rad this game was.

I play plenty of FPS games, and I thought the combat was mediocre at best.

It was functional sure, but there was nothing special about it, and the weapons didn't really feel like they had much punch.

Plus it was super easy to cheese your way through most of the encounters with a couple vigors, they really didn't give you much of a reason to experiment. I for example spent most of my game just spamming the murder of crows upgrade that turned dead enemies into traps, you could just stunlock entire groups of enemies with no real trouble.

Please give us the choice to change video quality manually. Literally every minute my quality changes, resulting in the last two/three seconds of video & audio replaying. My internet connection can handle 1080p streaming (maybe only 720 at peak times) elsewhere on the web, so naturally it is pretty infuriating seeing this player fuck around between a pixelated mess and crystal clear so very often.

I think we can all agree on two things.

1. This DLC was probably made because it can be made relatively quick to just 'get something out there'.

2. Opinions widely differ on Infinite's combat. One thinks it's bad to mediocre, others thought it was great.

I thought the combat in Infinite was really cool. I played on hard and 1999 mode. Perhaps that had something to do with it, because you can't really 'spam' vigors to win in those modes. You need to combine.

But either way, if you're not (that) into Infinite's combat then this obviously isn't for you. But if you were this DLC is pretty great. I bought the season pass yesterday when I read what Infinite's DLC was going to be.

@silvertorch1: You clearly did not read my comment since I also wrote I didn't care much for this DLC. This is not about what I like or not. It's rather about people complaining because it's not want they want it to be even though they also will get some awesome stuff too. We got battle focused content, we got story focused content. Everyone is served. Why complain?

It's subscriber only. All GB's videos are on YouTube anyway, which defeats the object. Flicking back between the two sites is an unnecessary hassle. I don't believe that should be hidden behind a paywall, and that non-subscribers should have to tussle with a deeply-flawed 'auto' streaming system.

Seriously? You're complaining about maybe having two browser tabs open at the same time because you don't want to pay the guys a pittance for their excellent content.

Wish I had such trivial problems to worry about.

I am a subscriber so I have no idea if the non-subscriber streaming is somehow crap. But in his defense, he shouldn't have to subscribe in order to get a good working stream. If that is what the issue was.

This was a great Quick Look; a classic in my opinion. It made me miss Ryan a lot though because I couldn't help but think of him chirping along with Jeff the whole time. A wave-based survival shooter as BioShock DLC though? Somebody at TTWO must have done this for the share price. Combat is not the reason I play BioShock, and that statement is likely true for the majority of players.
