Quick Look: Dead Island

I really want to like this game, but it just looks so rough around the edges. And pretty much everywhere in between. I'll get it at a bargain price.

Brad, you can move over to the driver's side in the car, at least on the PC version you can.

Another game that only garnered passing interest is now on my to buy list thanks to a Quick Look. I love Giant Bomb.

This actually looks pretty damn good, I'd might pick up.

So far, it's a great week, since the three games I expected to suck - Resistance 3, Driver and this - turn out pretty fun.

The arm-breaking thing... Eurgh. Not my kind of game but I can imagine the appeal.

I need to play this. It looks like a lot of fun.

analog controls on PC: x-padder (googlebing) and or x360ce.ini (code.google.com - googlebing) for analog controls?!

For all the haters out there: this game is less buggy than your typical Bethesda release.

OK, this QuickLook has convinced me to buy this game.  I was especially happy to hear that the optional analog control option turns out to be useful after you get over the learning curve.  Some other reviews have suggested that the analog control scheme was awful, but I guess it must be because the reviewer didn't invest enough time to learn how to use it properly.

I have no allegiance to Techland, I don't owe them anything. I'll get it on sale in a few months, but thanks for your input.

This looks like Borderlands but with more melee than gunplay, zombies and ass kicking.
And I like what I see.

Condemned (IMO) has some of the best FPS melee ever, Condemned 2 as well, though not so much as most of the latter half of the game had so much shooting in it.

Red steel 2? riddick? Zeno clash? fruit ninja?

I had no expectations at all for this game, positive or otherwise. But it looks really cool.

Got the game for PC today  and I love it !!
 
The game plays a lot better with the 360 controller than it does with M&KB (imo)
mouse movement feels a bit weird . 
Most importantly , a next/prev weapon on the scrollwheel + keybinds for weaponslots would be a nice and welcome addition in the next patch !! 
The quick inv ui works and its o.k but ,  at the very least give people the option to assign keys to the quick weapon/inv slots.
 
So if you want my advice (which you probably don't)..hook up your PC to your HDTV and play with a 360 controller .

This looks a lot like Farcry 2 with the large open world and first person driving.

I have an extraordinary big backlog of games so I was really only intending on getting games for multiplayer reasons this winter as I feel its useful to get in day one if you plan to stick with the MP for awhile. With the overall plan being to pick up more single player focused games next year, once I've started working my way through the backlog.
 
After watching this video twice, I have the urge to get this right away even if I can't persuade anyone to play coop with me - despite the slew of sealed games I currently have on my shelf and all the untouched games I have on Steam.  
 
A dilemma, indeed.

There are a lot of cool looking things about this game, but the melee combat looks really slow and unsatisfying. Like, Left 4 Dead is hundreds of zombies at a time that all explode into guts when you hit them, but this game seems to have small groups and unsatisfying hits.

More like Hitting Guys With Stick Island.

I really hope the quests get more interesting.  The game looks fun but combat alone ain't gonna do it for me.

See?  Quick Looks can be great and informative when you've played them for 25 hours before hand! 
 
Unlike just picking the game up and playing it blind.  

The bugs Brad mentioned bother me. I think I'll wait it out a bit.

About 2 hours in, and I friggin love this game. Playing on the PC, maxed, and runs great for me.

You can concentrate on specific limbs with digital controls also. The only difference is analog lets you angle your swing so if the zombie is moving around more you can be exact. I don't think it matters much, though, I usually get the right amount of gore that I want with digital. But, about that trophy....

This this this. The analog controls would work great. I might even pay to see a downgraded Wii version, after Red Steel 2 proved that you can have good melee controls.

Was pretty fun when playing it at PAX, hope it'll be just as great on a console.

I've watched 2/3 the QL so far. I want this f'n game! It does remind me of Borderlands. DAMN it I have too many games already....

This seems neat! Not something I would normally be interested in, but you never know.

I just noticed 'Nail'd' baseball bat, and it's from the developers of Nail'd. hohoho

The game has it's issues, but it's fun as hell rolling with a full 4 party and wailing on everything. The loot and upgrading system is quite addicting too as its my first time playing a game with that kind of system.

God I can't wait for this.

They can be. All four can be the same character during the same co-op.

I should buy this, but with Dues Ex still sitting there unfinished and a whole bunch of Gears on my plate(need to play 1 and 2 before 3 drops in 2 weeks) I don't think I have the time thanks to work.

Thanks to this quick look I'm getting Dead Island this weekend, and tradeing in Dues Ex: Human Revolution to get it. I just finished Deus Ex:HR on the hardest difficulty setting, and theres not much replay value. Frankly I was left dissapointed with Deus Ex: HR, the enemy A.I. was lacking compared to the decade old original, and it was missing that extra layer of open world chaos the first one had. In the first Deus Ex I remember being able to let loose bioengineered creatures against enemies and having Halo like three way battles. The emptiness of the Deus Ex: HR enviroments is a dissapointment too. Too many cookie cutter, do nothing NPCs standing around, and all these apartment buildings with only two or three rooms you can enter.

We must know who booted The Shoemaker!!
