Game looks kind of jank, but for a taste of Dark Alliance on 360 PLUS downloadable price point, I'm totally in for this.

I played this at PAX East.  They put in some funny text at the end of the demo that said I should just go buy the game because the developers were starving.  I thought it was a nice touch.

The end.

Definitely generic and safe but I'm glad someone out there is doing a competent, downloadable-only action-RPG for the console for $10-$15.  That is if you're already done with Torchlight...

This game looks like it has about as much to do with D&D as... no, it has fucking nothing to do with it.  This is as far away from actual D&D as you can get.  I mean, really?  Did they have to cut out like, 95% of the depth of the game, remove the vast majority of classes, races, etc., and then base the game on the absolute most generic of  D&D campaign settings?  Sigh, Atari.  Remember when you didn't just prostitute your license out?  Remember when we had games like Icewind Dale?

Not that this game necessarily looks terrible, mind you.  It's just a gross misuse of a license and yet another nail in the coffin for well-made, deep, full-featured RPGs, now that BioWare have turned into another EA assembly line developer and even indies like Spiderweb are proving they're aiming for the lowest common denominator market.  Obsidian seem to be the last bastion in the West, and even then there's no guarantee they'll be able to ever release something along the lines of Neverwinter Nights 2 again.  What's even the fucking point?  Are there really any D&D fans clamouring for a cheap hack-n-slash version that removes pretty much everything they like about the game?  This is like... this is Poochie-level, marketing-committee-driven shlock at its worst.

Oh well.  Guess I can keep waiting for Age of Decadence.

It took 18 minutes of time (into the video, who knows how long before) and two people insisting Brad use the special abilities before he finally got around to trying them?

And that's how D&D online should've played.

The big question is when played co-op online, will you be able to leave one anothers side or be stuck within a single screen like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, the Balder's Gate PS2 games, Dungeons of Norrath PS2 games, etc etc.  The way they handled it for local play isn't a bad deal, as in, you dont just stop moving when seperated by any sort of distance, but I'm quite afraid that it will work they same way when played online... which is... well, insert swears.  I don't mind them crapping all over the D&D name (i still play tabletop D&D and dont associate these games with tabletop in any way, shape, or form), but just give me a decent friggin camera angle/ seperate views for each character in one of them.

As an aside, the original PC Baldur's Gate series was amazing, has to rank as one of my top 10 video games ever made, along with The 7th Saga for SNES :P

Quite awesome.  I am exactly like Brad in that I need to check every nook and cranny for treasure chests and loot barrels.  I usually even re-check because I'm always worried I might have missed a spot.   This game looks pretty cool, I'd love to know how long it is approximately.

My favorite world was Dark Sun.  It was very Conan-ish.

I fully understand peoples issues with 4e and in fact I don't really like it myself that much. However it does at least try to solve the completely imbalanced shit fest that 3.5e became with all the supplemental books. It's nice that they try to make classes like fighters and rogues have a purpose other than being some dudes buff repository(read: bitch). All the dudes with CodZillas, world altering wizards or any other kind of multi-classed out the ass mongrel running around in 3.5 kinda made shit loco. However that noble goal is completely crushed by the heaping pile of shit that constitutes what they did to the general lore of the FRs. Dragonborn as a mainline playable race EL OH EL that's the gayest shit ever. Also the cosmetic changes to tieflings are pretty lols as well. "
Sure, when players focus on optimization, wizards and the magical/divine types get all sort of crazy, especially with all the supplementals, but I feel like it's partly the role of the DM to rein that kind of stuff in, as well as the players to focus more on the party than treating it like a competition on who kills the most stuff. Though I guess at best, that results in wizards playing the Batman/God role and controlling the field. But also, I agree, what 4e did to the Forgotten Realms lore is all sorts of silly and moderately confusing. Maybe they should make a Pathfinder game. You know, to target an even smaller playerbase :P

Why do games use the D&D name but absolutely none of the trappings of actual D&D? Come on... the name alone can't hold that much weight. If anything, it's had nothing but negative connotations in gaming since... well, either Throne of Bhaal or Neverwinter Nights, depending on what kind of a gamer you are.

I miss the "here's three gibberlings, now fight for you life and barely come out alive" part of Baldur's Gate 1, where every game that calls itself a role playing game today tosses billions of pathetic monsters at you. It's all about how you level and the tactics you use in combat, not about how many times you can mash a power button on a toolbar while the enemies blow apart in one hit.

Yes, I know this is a Diablo-esque game, but the D&D system barely lends itself to a makeshift version for a computer RPG, let alone a hack and slasher.

Sure, I agree that it doesn't have much to do with the license, but to be fair, there's only so much one could stuff into a downloadable game. Perhaps they could've just listed it as a new IP.

Wait, so "it's a download-only game" has now become a valid excuse for games lacking depth, for nickel-and-diming players via DLC (an extra $10 gets you the next 10 character levels!!11), for effectively bastardising an existing game for the sake of (impotent) mass market appeal, for actively contributing to the trend of all videogaming appealing to the lowest common denominator in a market already dominated by such games, rather than providing a variety of experiences, and for further solidifying the slow death of one of gaming's greatest and most misunderstood genres, only to bill it as "progress", "streamlining" and "innovation"?

I like the look of this game, but I wish dev's would stop attaching respectable franchise names onto these disposable easy access casual games, same has happened with dungeon siege 3.

It doesn't seem to do the games any favours.

Okay...first off, calm down. This obviously means more to you than to me, so I guess it affects you on a more 'personal' level. You got me there. I wasn't trying to start a fight here; if you notice what I put at the end of my comment, you'll see that I suggested that it could've been simply a new IP. Do you at least agree with that statement?

Is it just me or does this game suffer from some of the most terrible pop-in ever witnessed?  Objects seem to change shape and textures change quality just one or two meters from the character.  That sort of thing drives me nuts.

Ba'al is a name for God (both the God and a god) in eastern-semetic religion. it is use on its own (mostly in the bible) or with another name (earth-Ba'al esc). In western-christian/jewish tradition it is often tied up with Satan (as in THE Devil), but if you read the old testament it is more a deity of none-jewish tradition.
