Well there are no Titans in the game. Dunno if that helps.

Anyway it will be a free to play game so no harm in trying it out.

What is this... Giant-MMO-Bomb today?!

More MMO coverage on Giant Bomb today than in, what, several years?

Firefall, eh? Name doesn't ring a bell, if only they'd been promoting it at conventions and events so that more people might have heard of it.

... In the dark dark room... there is a dark dark cabinet... in the dark dark cabinet... there is a dark dark shelf... on the dark dark shelf... there is a dark dark box... and in the dark dark box... there is Firefall.

I remember having some fun thumping in the beta like a year ago or so, but the crafting game was severly lacking. Wonder if they ever got around to making it more interesting.

As for Jeffs interest in the production of the game, he should really read up on the whole Mark Kern situation.

This totally is not the game I thought Firefall was. I thought they were trying to make a MOBA or waved based game just with microtransactions.

I refuse to believe they are finally looking at this game.

This game will be a PAX booth, always and forever.

Maybe I just have a predisposition towards tropical settings and jetpacks from playing so much Super Mario Sunshine, but this seems like a perfectly fine game to play mindlessly while you burn through podcasts and TV shows. I can't see myself ever getting super into it, but for the asking price of zero dollars you could do a lot worse.

I'm gonna try it. No harm in that. Seems like it could be fun in groups. Also, the glider that I know is in the game would make some of the travel that Jeff is doing more entertaining.

Not so long ago this game was actually pretty fun. Crafting and gathering materials was complicated (lots of different kinds, lots of exploring to find temporary caches of what you need, racing to thump those caches before other players found them). Progressing your character required crafting, and XP came mostly from events in the open world (no solo quests). It was an MMO that didn't play like other MMOs, and I really enjoyed it.

Then the developers decided it was too difficult for new players, so they took out most of the crafting and resource mechanics and turned progression into the classic WoW grind-fest you see here. Yes it's easy to learn, but only because there's no depth. There's nothing to keep me playing.

"Easy to learn, difficult to master" is a pretty cool concept, but it only works if your game has both halves.

It's not especially my type of thing either, but I'd imagine that the relaxing and fairly undemanding nature of these sorts of grinds has an appeal. It doesn't take too much concentration, so you can do it while watching TV, chatting to people (the social aspect of MMOs), eating, or other such activities.

It also offers a constant sense of gradual progression over time. I believe there have been studies about how people's brain responds well to that sensation of progression, especially so if they aren't feeling that elsewhere. It's an interesting psychological study.

Personally I do still enjoy the simple pleasure of finding better stuff - but given that so many games offer that experience now it isn't enough by itself to warrant my attention.

I saw a lot of Borderlands in this game. That is what occurred to me. Interesting what Jeff was saying and speculating as to it's future. Fire-Fall really didn't look bad to me, accepting the art style and all. It would seem odd that a developed world would be a calculated throw-away. Granted there are seemingly templates for MMo's. But I've never played one of these games....

Wasn't the beta for this game covered by GB some years ago? Perhaps it was another that looked very similar

@jeff Re: the Destiny Beta with the ?? enemies, I just assumed Bungie made those enemies invincible to impede progress into areas they didn't want you seeing/exploring yet. I tried to quickly bike it out through an area dense with that level of enemy, hoping to zoom past them to explore further. My vehicle was promptly as asploded by them every time, taking me with it.

Meanwhile, to the game at hand...

I can't believe this has taken so long and in all those years they didn't come up with a more streamlined solution to displaying your health and jet pack meters; two onscreen for each seems both excessive and inelegant.

Honestly, this looks more appealing than from what I've played of Destiny. The really high jump height you can get to, no ADS, actually sci-fi weaponry rather than typical military stuff for a sci-fi game. Neither games seem to have interesting quests or AI or story, though.

Game looks really rough. As soon as I saw Jeff pull out a tank size mount I knew this game was in trouble. Also can someone explain the tiki stuff? I get its a tropical world we are colonizing/mining, but I don't understand the tiki resort stuff.

@beachthunder: A game for people burnt out on Titanfall? More like a game for people who don't have an XBone, or people who prefer multiplayer games where the games are won by the people who spend the most on DLC. In other words, it's like Titanfall for the Candy Crush Saga crowd.

Regular MMO mission structure leads to monotonous gameplay.

Environments look nice to me though!

Really dislike premature negative attitudes in quick looks though, less negative further in though.

Yeah I played beta last year and thought the sandboxy idea of mining, crafting components, and the way you progressed your battleframe were neat. there just wasn't enough reason to keep playing. Now seeing they stripped a lot of that out took away what made it unique. Too bad too because I would really like to play a PVE focused online shooter on an mmo scale, in theory.
