Quick Look: L.A. Noire

The fuss over the face stuff is fairly overblown, especially when you know how they did it. When Brad says "Sometime it looks almost like video of a real face..." that is exactly what it is.

They take a 3d video of the actor and stick it on a standard 3D mannequin. I don't think it's even a modelled face with animated texture, it looks like it's literally video.

It looks a lot better than the hand animated or mocap'd stuff you normally see, though in this case it feels like the quality gap between faces and the rest of the models is too great, especially the photoreal faces contrasting with low poly, boxy ears.

Hopefully I can ignore it and enjoy the game.

I'm so getting this...when it drops in price.  I freaking Love Noir.  I was so excited when I heard that this was coming out for the 360 as well. 

So, don't ruin it for me!

One little thing that made me laugh and say "cool" in this game (among other things) was having my hat fall off during a shoot out and Cole reaching down, grabbing it, and putting it back on when I walked back to it. It's little things like that that make me smile.

This video annoys me. Why do a Quick Look if you're not willing to show off the game?

This is the worst Quick Look ever. Brad just annoys the hell out of me. How could you spoil a game in the tutorial mission? Just stupid...

Yes the facial animation is great, but other than that I really don't think the graphics look that amazing.

Please don't do a quick look if you're just going to avoid playing the game out of fear of spoilers. Anyone who is that scared of them won't watch this. This quick look is frustrating.

Would have enjoyed this game more if it weren't for the "do this thing for five minutes, wait I don't want to show you this, here's five minutes of something else, wait I don't want to show you that either" format. I know you're trying to keep people from being spoiled Brad, but I kind of wanted to see some of this game.

As far as the game itself goes, the facial animations being leaps and bounds better than the body movement animations really bothers me, and I like Phoenix Wright and all, but I don't see what is so amazing about this game. Maybe I'll rent it and give it a try just to try to figure out what I'm missing.

This falls into the uncanny valley because everything that isn't a face looks mediocre.  A person's believability is about more than shifting face wrinkles.

hahaha I love the graphics, faces are great, but man look at that thumb when he is in notebook review mode (holding the pencil), its so stubby it made me laugh!

Also, i am just curious, the game obviously looks way cooler and unique than Mafia 2, but one of Brads biggest complaints in his review and giving it 3/5 was "an open world with nothing to do". Why does he like it here but not in Mafia 2? I loved Mafia 1 but didnt play Mafia 2 based in a large part on that review, but then here in this game he doesn't seem to mind an open world that seems exactly the same set up? maybe just the base game is that much better to bring it to a 5/5 instead of Mafias 3/5? Makes me want to try mafia 2 just to compare them now!

If you're one of the dudes who think the early story can't be spoiled or that the game was 'not shown off' here, this game isn't for you. Unless I misunderstand deeply, what it has to offer will be of no interest to you.

Is it really animation if they recorded the actors and digitized their performance? As Brad said, the facial "animation" wasn't done by an animator. He also says that it looks like video of a human being. Ryan said that it reminds him of FMV...

So it's not actually animation, it's more like rotorscope. It's impressive and the facial detail is amazing but what's the point of digitizing actors when you could just do FMV? Is it cheaper that way? It would only be significant if that level of detail were applied to fully animated non-existent faces that character designers built from scratch.

Apart from that, the art production is superb; I especially like the caption font and the design of the notebook. Letting you play in black and white makes this game officially awesome. It'll definitely win awards. Also, you know Irish people don't really say "boyo", right...?

They play through puzzles in point-and-click adventure games, I don't really  see how showing off one very early game sequence is anymore spoiler-y. If you're playing through the game, some things are going to get spoiled; it comes with the territory. Really frustrating to see a small part of something and then get pulled away because they don't want to show to much.

Looks like a great game, but I would have liked to see a little bit more of it. I know that would be spoiling it, but this was not a great Quick Look.

The first thing I thought when seeing the interrogation was: HOLY ****** SHIT! It was hard to think this was not a movie. A new standard is born, right here.

I've had a lot of conversations with people lately about whether the adventure genre is really dead or not. I'm happy to see this game being well received. This actually adds a bit of hope for me in regards to the Tex Murphy series which I desperately wish would come back. I'm sure they wouldn't use live action sequences of course like they did in Under a Killing Moon, Pandora Directive, etc. But I'm sure if Chris Jones were sign up for the project he could still be the voice of Tex Murphy. Man it'd be so sweet to revisit that world in a kind of game like this.

Long ago comment, but I'm with him. Every scene of dialogue was a joy to watch. I would NOT have wanted any of it spoiled.

The writing and acting for this game was amazing.

Good QL, but I'm surprised when they cut away they didn't just come back to the Streets of L.A. free roam mode, as that's what Brad wanted to show.
