Quick Look: Mafia II

So I caved, ended up buying this game. I have lots of dough, have a week before my semester starts so why not. I have to say, after 6 chapters (I think roughly halfway through the game), it's.... awesome. Like really, really good. No there isn't a giant open world with tons of stuff to do, but you aren't going to give a shit unless you come into this wanting Crackdown. The story, which is the main draw, is really well done thus far. I can't expound on this too much in a comment on a video but really this game does not deserve the critical thrashing it got from some reviewers.
 
I'd say anyone who likes the open-world crime games for their stories and characters, not the general mayhem and sideshit, should check this baby out.

I don't know what Brad is talking about, the shotgun does kill in one shot almost every time and you can get into fist fights whenever you want to...disappointing Brad...
 
And refusing to go down in a hail of bullets just do we cant chalk this up on the TTD boards...weeeak

I bought the game yesterday and am loving every minute of it. Yes, the first missions can seem mundane (like the one shown in this QL), but you actually get to find out how it is to start at the bottom and work your way to the top, instead of starting at the top immediately. 
 
And, to be quite honest, I'd rather steal cars and deliver cigarettes than go bowling.

It asks the question, does this game need to be an open world?

I don't think the term open-world necessarily has to translate to sandbox. I'm fine having an open-world game that's not a sandbox game if it's other elements are competent. Lord knows we have seen many sandbox games that plays up that notion, but is otherwise poor in its delivery of its other features.

The look of the world is really nice -  at least from what I can gather from this video.

Grand Theft Phonebooth!

I must say I like the simulation driving mode in this game. This and GTA4 are fun to just drive around in... except for the boring cities.

Seems a lot of people don't really get the open world part of this game. In games like GTA and Just Cause, the open world is the entire point of the game, it's the main focus. In mafia 1 and 2, the open world serves as a backdrop to the plot line. A seemless experience in a big living city. This game series is closer in spirit to games like Max Payne than GTA, really. It's a story driven game with added immersion from the open world.

Try Godfather 2 made by EA, it's 100 times more fun then this game.

@Max_Cherry: Replying to an old comment but sure, this was the time when giantbomb didn't have the subscriber based model like they are using today. Showing boobs (I know how silly this is but it's true) could've hurt the website
