The combat looks really slippery, which is my biggest complaint with almost all Japanese action games.

Conceptually it's interesting as hell, exactly the sort of thing I'd want to play. In practicality, constantly fighting against the controls makes investing the time the game requires way too tedious.

That sounds good at first, but then I noticed that only people who don't play MH want this feature. Most of the people who play the game seem to think it would mess things up.

A) There are times where there are lots of things on screen. Multiple monsters, your team mates (who you can knock down by accident) etc. Locking on to focus on one thing would be problematic.

B) The monsters have several body parts that can be cut off, broken, etc. You can cripple the monster or get extra rewards. Lock-on would mean cycling through different areas of a huge monster's body or manually picking which part ot lock-on to.

C) Aiming is part of the game's mechanics and how fast or slow a weapon swings is something that the game is designed around. It's about movement patterns and timing. Adding a lock-on would be like letting you lock-on to other players' heads for effortless headshots in an FPS.

I definitely agree that the game feels very dated in places.  But a lock on feature would really ruin it, as other posters have already explained.

In my opinion Capcom should handle the series like they have with Dead Rising, where they have a Western team develop most of the game and modernize a lot of it, but without losing the style and fundamentals of what makes it Monster Hunter.

I loved me some Phantasy Star Online back in the day and I think Monster Hunter would be right up my alley, but I don't have any of the consoles that I could play it on. I really hope Capcom decides to make one of these for the 360 and  PS3.

This game gives series WoW vibes what with the gathering, crafting and dungeon crawling all for the sole purpose of being able to kill things and get loot just so you can then repeat the process again and again and again... lol

The game can be pretty excruciating with the larger swords since by the time your character swings it the monster has moved out of the way.

Originally this game was gunna be for the PS3 i believe, they announced it for the Wii afterwards due to production costs were too high on the PS3...or something, i really have no idea anymore, it was a long time ago.

That was the rumor, but apparently the major reason was that the wii has penetrated the japanese market much much more than the PS3, and since MH sells like crazy over there... larger user base = More Swimming pools filled with money.

I gotta say though, I'm really sad its not on the PS3. I am a diehard MH fan so I'll probably still buy it on the wii.. but it looks pretty bad graphically. =/ The PSP version will be godly when it finally comes out though.

Also: Not a bad QL, I was really suprised. Some stuff that was kinda wrong, and some game stuff that could have been easily remedied via the tutorials or instruction manual, but im glad to see Ryan started playing the game a little bit before recording, that always does wonders.

@Rhaknar: So you mean people are gonna hate less on Jeff and Ryan for not appreciating the game when it's the full game? Cause that's what I meant :P  (2 pages in there hasn't been any though)

I like MH, played Freedom Unite for about 120 hours solo. I'm still not that good at it though and the way you play it, watching for specific animations in the monsters and use attacks conservatively seems too slow and require too much precision for me too want to learn it, kinda how I like fighting games but never get more than halfway decent at them.

I was way into Demon's Souls and how that game played and found myself wishing MH controlled more like it, so maybe it's not really my kind of game but I'll probably still get it.

I do have a friend who's into Monster Hunter, he's not like Jeff though, doesn't have a Wii.

Another bit of Monster Hunter content on the site, fraught with misinformation!
None of it a huge deal, though.  Ryan was making the game a little harder than it is.  It's one of those games you're going to love or hate, I'm on the love-wagon, but I can totally see why some people aren't.

Well... I feel like if Capcom wants a larger user base then, in the west at least, they need a Monster Hunter game for the HD consoles. Maybe it's different in Japan, maybe it's even different in Europe, but in the US unless a Wii game has "Wii" or "Mario" in the title it there's a pretty good chance isn't going to sell very well.

Game has cool ideas, and I'm glad some of you enjoy it, but a combat oriented game with worse controls than the average mmo means the demo was more than enough for me.

Here's a crazy idea. What if said lock-on would lock the CAMERA to the monster of choice? Like, say, how it works in every other third person game? (Okay, every game I've played except Zelda. Zelda does actually lock Link onto an enemy, not just the camera.) You can still aim independently of the camera, exactly like you would without lock-on. You just don't have to mess with the camera controls while in combat. If a giant beast stampedes you and ends up behind you, you don't have to stop and sloowly turn the camera around to find him again, because the camera will be focused on him.

You'll still be able to fight other things on screen. You can still target individual parts of any monster, including ones you're not even locked on to. You still have to manually "aim" your swings, unless of course your target is right in front of you, you want to hit center of mass, and you're both standing still. Without lock-on, you can still potentially miss in that situation because of clunky camera angles, and that never feels fair or fun. If the enemy is moving and you have to time your swing, or you need more precise aim, then it'll take just as much skill as it would to pull it off without a locked camera thanks to how you can't adjust your aim mid-combo, or even mid-swing.

I've read plenty of explanations for why a camera lock wouldn't work in this game. None of them, so far, actually justify its absence.
