Quick Look: Need for Speed Payback

Good to hear they fixed the difficulty and rubber-banding issues from the previous game. On the last one as soon as you crashed you might as well just restart the race again because you would never be able to catch up to the first place again. It's also good to see that now the game actually pauses when you want to pause it, unlike the previous one.

Sadly, the rest of this game looks like a disappointment and a step down.

It actually looks remarkably similar to Forza Horizon.

im sorry but this is exactly what burnout paradise was, terrible voice acting, terrible controls and a bunch of garbage races with no life to it.

Perhaps this shouldn't have been "enhanced"... That framerate is not great.

I'm into good action driving games, like Driver San Francisco. Give me another one of those please. Based on the first showing of Payback I was thinking this might be one (and that mission looks cool), but it appears to primarily be a worse Forza Horizon. Just with a poorly written story, or at least bad dialog.

I really hope that wont be the case. Both their last two games Need for Speed Rivals and Need for Speed were good arcade racing games, and I really hope to see them going back to something similar.

Yep as I said in the forum thread also this looks so boring, and bad but not bad in the fun way. The Voice acting is beyond horrible.

Chalk me up as another who wants PS2-era NFS back. Most Wanted was for me, like many others here, a game that was just damn *fun* -- the way the "wicka wicka wacka" rave-music would transition to a driving orchestral score when the cops jumped on you, the cinematic camera angles when you drove through the "crash zones" (or whatever the hell it was) to lose the cops...man.

I would EASILY pay up to $40 for a NFS Most Wanted/Underground/Carbon Canyon re-make/re-mastered pack on current-gen consoles. Nudge nudge, wink wink.

That voice acting is spectaculary bad/bland.

I think Need for Speed Underground 1 still remains as the only NFS game I played a whole lot. Arcadey racing felt good and I even liked the soundtrack (back then at least). Played Porsche some too, but that was mostly to marvel how good it looked on my brand-new PC back then.

It's not, you get enough currency that it's a non issue and I wouldn't let a trivial thing like that turn you off from a terrific game/series.

Sorry, didn't mean to make it sound like I was bashing on Horizon. I literally can't play it since I've never owned any of the Xbox family and my brother is selling his 360.

I'm just kind of baffled that a feature that's absolutely free in other games is linked to cash in these modern racing games. Maybe that's the "old" gamer in me talking, but gotta say, not a fan at all.

Porsche Unleashed for PC is kind of a hidden gem of Need for Speed. It's not for everyone, but I enjoyed learning about Porsche and racing lots of different point to point races. Those interested, beware, the PS1 version is a different game by a different dev, and is not worth it.

How do you take a year off and come out with a game that's worse than the already terrible game you had before?!

Oh dear, I see the Plague of the Lootboxes continues into Need for Speed. Typical EA I guess. I don't understand how this game can look graphically worse than Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, which was released in 2010! But I swear the graphics look no better or even worse than Hot Pursuit did on the PC. This just looks so... boring. I worry that Need for Speed might be reaching the end of the road.

I get a feeling EA shoehorning frostbite into EVERY game they make now is a very bad decision. It was said frostbite had issues handling a game like Mass Effect in Andromeda and this game just looks off in terms of the actual driving. I could see frostbite being hard to translate to a racing game as well considering it was meant for first person shooters.

My favorite part was when the cops were keeping up with a 200mph prototype super car. Maybe they should just be stealing the cop's cars. There's way more of them.

I was just going to ask the same thing. I should probably just Google it but it HAS to be her. Same haircut (oddly enough) and everything.

I don't often post because I have been slacking on video games, but I did get that Forza Horizon 3 Hot Wheels thing, and I must concur: there is nothing whimsical or ridiculous (or vaguely Sonic-esque) about drifting a Rolls-Royce Phantom around an enormous shiny blue plastic loop-de-loop at like 300 km/h.

That game is a must-have for any person who is/was into cars on a sort of shallow, aesthetic level. I didn't even have much Hot Wheels stuff, but I love driving and certain flavors of absurdity, and the folks making that game understand what a good time means to a fake-as-fuck gearhead.

The Need for Speed game in this video is basically the life of Razor Callahan, played from his perspective, and thus revealing that jerks are only conditionally funny, and in minuscule doses at that. Looks nice in spots, though. Driving is uninspired.

Call me crazy, but there's something about this game that seems like it would scratch an itch that I have for these games. The drag races and drifting stuff looks like it's straight out of NFS: Underground, so I guess I'll see if this gets the nostalgia flowing?

When this game is under 20 bucks, of course.

Before this quick look I was mildly interested in the game. Now it's a hard pass. It looks kind of fun, but it's killed by the loot boxes and that shitty "You'll play it how we want you to play it" cutscene jank. That fuckin Benny Hill semi truck was just... I mean, come on, really? It's hilariously bad. And can loot boxes fucking die already? Easily the worst trend in gaming right now.

Seeing what his car was at the beginning and him crashing into a tree really hurt even if it isn't real. Only 547 GNX were ever made.

I really like the idea that these dudes went and registered some vanity "PAYBACK" plates just to do crime.

Otherwise, this game looks like it controls like garbage.

This game looks like a heavily modded PC GTA 4 or maybe a bit worse.

I'm sure it plays way better at least.

I wish EA would just kill this franchise off, can't think of the last one I enjoyed. This seems like another terrible entry, the driving looks so stiff. If you need a good open world racer with a lot going for it just get Forza Horizon 3 or even The Crew which as problems but is still a fun time.

Also what's going on with the framerate?

I enjoy Jeff and his critique and there is nothing wrong with complaining about a game he doesn't like. But I always find it out that he hates a game, bitches about it, but then goes to say he'll keep playing it.

He's an incredibly experience, smart, likable guy, but holy shit, some times I wished he loved games again.

Christ I miss Burnout, I wasn't a massive fan of Paradise but I'd take that over this any day. That said I have no faith they could make a good modern Burnout.
