Any day I'm re-reminded of Captain Sawada and his incredibly goofy super move, that's a pretty good day.

The sphere grid level up system is not new to this game.

I haven't watched the who video yet, but it's funny how so far most of the things Dan thinks are new additions have actually been in other Ratchet games... I totally get why he wouldn't know that (there's been a ton of these games over the years) it's just ironic since he's acting like these are selling points or something like that.

That upgrade system really does look like a sphere grid! Fun fact: Ratchet and Tidus are the same person.

Hm, this looks really...wrong...

It looks like some sort of Unreal Engine tech demo. I'm thinking this sort of thing:

Loading Video...

i.e. cartoony characters that have somehow appeared in a far too realistic environment...

I agree with what you're saying, but that's a bad example given that nothing in those environments are Mario-like, and the fact that Mario is animating so damn poorly might be the biggest point of contrast.

Played some last night for about an hour. Glad to have a R&C game on PS4 even if it feels a bit off to me. The graphics are nice I guess, but the story and the characters just feel so weird to me. I guess because it's starting over and it's going to take a while for me to adjust to that after 9 games. It's definitely trying to be a generic pixar movie that's for sure.

Well, the main point is that Ratchet and Clank game seems like two unrelated games running at once - there's the detailed, yet mundane background layer; then there's the whimsical characters dancing around layer.

I loved those first three games. I do agree with Jeff though, playing them all in their day, by the time I got to the third one I was a bit worn out at that point [although it probably was the peak of them] so I never actually finished that third one. Still those original three are perhaps one of my favorite video game series of all time. I could go for another good Ratchet game, even if it is a reboot. Sounds pretty awesome.

Well, in case you didn't know for realsies, Naughty Dog did consider making that "gritty" and realistic reimagining of Jak & Daxter. There's some concept art of that floating about, which looked...well, interesting at least. Maybe if this takes off, they'll try that again since Uncharted got wrapped!

...oh wait, I want a Savage Starlight platformer instead!

@forteexe21: I can't really figure out why NO ONE seems to remember Into the Nexus. It was a real good ratchet game.

Probably because it was 2013 so everyone was obsessed with The Last of Us and GTA V, it was budget priced, and came out right before new consoles launched. Which is a damn shame, its my personal 3rd favorite in the series, right after UYA and CiT.

Also this looks great and I'm super excited to dive into it once I'm done with Dark Souls 3.

Kinda like this, eh?

To answer Dan's question about that one cutscene where Ratchet encounters the Snagglebeast, that's actually an in game cutscene. Which I think Dan being confused on whether that cutscene was in game or from the move shows how brilliant this game looks graphically.

I've always admired the Ratchet franchise and its good to see Insomniac back at it in making really fun and meaty R&C games again!

I've never played a Ratchet game and I have question. Are these games actually platformers? That's always what I hear people refer to them as, but like 99% of any footage I've ever seen of them has just been Ratchet running around shooting things.

I love platformers and it would be nice to play a new one, but I've never been able to figure out if Ratchet is something I would enjoy or not. Based on all the footage I've ever seen I would say no, but so many people seem to like the series that it's always kind of stuck in the back of my mind.

@soapy86: The first game was mainly a platformer that had guns in it, but since then the guns had been more emphasized in sequels. Ratchet: Deadlocked, for example, was just a third-person shooter. I think people like to call these games platformers because of how the earlier games played and that it has a lot more of it than typical shooters do. It strikes that delicate balance of exploring an environment and shooting things that other video games don't really do the same way.

Overall, I'd say the series is under the broad "Action-adventure" label because it's kind of its own thing that no specific genre term can accurately describe it. And, I think that's where its appeal lies. It's its own thing, and nobody else really makes games like this.

The Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted series are the reasons I, primarily a PC gamer, bought a PS3. Looks like they will also be the reason I eventually buy PS4.

The poor quality of the PS3 HD collection still pisses me off. Those games deserved better than the scrubs at Idol Minds.

@sweetz: Really? I rather enjoyed the first 2 games when playing them in that collection (Haven't played UYA). I guess if anything, I hated the menu layout as it has a little screen showing the game you can play and most of it is artwork from All 4 One.

This game isn't "based" off of the upcoming movie. It's meant to be a reboot of the original that also ties into the movie. Sometimes I wish the GB team would just spend a LITTLE bit of time on google. It would help them seem so much more informed... Surprising that Dan actually kinda had it right then Jeff went and screwed it up.

Dan said there hasn't been a big Ratchet & Clank release since A Crack In Time, but he's forgetting about Into The Nexus. EVERYONE forgets about Into The Nexus, I swear to god I have never seen less coverage for a popular video game series in my life. It's like that game never existed.

@mocbucket62: They were playable, but chock full of cosmetic and audio bugs. Music didn't loop correctly, Ratchet's helmet (in 2 and 3 where he had armor) was weirdly oversized in cutscenes, there were missing textures in a few spots...and more. Individually not a big deal, but they added up.

Here's a more exhaustive list.

I've played many PS2 -> PS3 HD remasters (Ico/Shadow of Colossus, Metal Gear Solid cllection, Beyond Good and Evil, Okami, God of War collection, Jak and Daxter collection) and they are all pretty much spot on or improved ports of those games. The R&C collection is not quite on the same level of disaster as the Silent Hill HD collection, but it definitely does not hold up to the quality of work done on other remasters.

I'm a massive ratchet fan and this game seems utterly amazing.

I'd obviously have preferred an entirely new story and set of levels etc but considering how poorly the original game has aged its nice to see a new version of it that is vastly improved and will help get other people in to the series. Also oh my god is this game gorgeous, nicest looking current gen game I've ever seen.

It keeps driving me nuts every time they discuss this game, and mention how R&C hasn't had a regular game since Quest for Booty, or Crack in Time....There was Into the Nexus on PS3 much more recently which was a standard Ratchet game. Just because they didn't CARE about R&C since then doesn't mean they didn't exist.

Yeah, the whole time I was watching I kept thinking every time they brought that up "are they going to remember Into The Nexus this time? Does NOBODY remember Into The Nexus? D:"

About the weapon wheel; I remember in previous games you would cycle between multiple weapon wheels while in the weapon swap menu. In Tools of Destruction, the first one for ps3, I think you got up to your 4th wheel. So don't think that just because they filled up that wheel there are no more weapons!

Obviously Goldeneye set some standards back in the day; but this seems like a really high production value, super-fun game =)
