I got way into ships sometime around last week, and found that mnemonics are pointless when you can just learn the etymology behind words.

Starboard comes from being the side that one used to steer a boat on. Most people are right handed and have stronger right arms, so the steering mechanism would be an paddle on the right side. Because of word changes, this one might not be the easiest to remember on its own... But if you remember one, you'll get both right, so let's look at port! Why port? Because that's the side of the boat you'd dock against the port, so the paddle wouldn't get in the way. It's basically the same reason that dictates car movement today! Except you'd steer on the right, and so park on the left. If boats had lanes, I suppose they'd drive on the left one for this reason.

Anyway, your arm's sticking out on the right side, so you keep the port on your left side.

I get why devs are using procedural level generation but it is just killing games for me. Instantly lost interest in Rebel Galaxy as soon as the guys pointed out that the systems are randomly generated.

It is pretty much the only instance in which Ebert's criticism of games as art holds true: you can't really have authorial intent when the author merely developed a bunch of generic assets and fiddled with an algorithm until it distributed those assets in a somewhat realistic and/or interesting way. It is only slightly less creatively bankrupt than chucking a bunch of unity store assets together and submitting them to Steam Greenlight.

Played this game at PAX South - I even got a free t-shirt for stopping by the booth. Good to see that the game is still holding up well.

Alright ... is it just me or does the interface look really really bad?

It looks a lot better when you're not rapidly flicking in and out of menus for no apparent reason like Vinny is in the QL. It's a very PC game, so the menus do get kinda dense, but they're also straightforward and informative. I'd call the UI "plain" but it's not at all bad.

Only thing I'm down on interface-wise is forced gamepad *or* m/kbd. On the plus side, native DS4 support on PC.

Port is actually the left, Starboard is the right side. I grew up on fishing boats and remember that boat traffic is generally supposed to pass Port to Port when headed in opposite directions. Which is basically the same way car traffic is set up. In the U.S. at least..

Also boats headed back home from sea, when passing buoys with either a red or green light. You keep the red light on the right side of the boat when returning to your home port. This was taught to me as the "Red Right Return" rule. It can be very important in certain narrow channels and passages as well as being neat general knowledge.

Port is the left side, starboard is the right side. The bow is the front, the aft or stern is at the back. :)

Did I hear the battlefield hardline trailer music? Seems like the soundtrack has the most personality out of everything going on here, but still looks like a neat game, but not that different from all the rest like this.

Probably the best version of these games from what it looks like.
