Quick Look: Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell

Never got passed the first hour of Saints Row IV so I'll give this a miss until they get back to the roots of SR.

I've never understood this sentiment. Aren't the roots of SR a GTA clone cash in? SR2 started to develop the humor more, but SR3 really stepped out of the shadow of it's forefathers and became it's own game.

But you have to agree this and SRIV are worlds away from SR3 at this point. The most ridiculous moments in SR3 are not even close to the normal stuff you do on SRIV and Gat Out of Hell.

I loved SRIV. And I had to play it on the 360 so I had multiple hard locks and crashes but I still really liked it. And I was looking forward to replaying it on the PS4 because I was hoping it would run more like the PC version but it doesn't seem like it does which is a complete bummer for me.

Saints Row: The Third - Giant Bomb GOTY 2011

Not liking the expansion and DLC practices in these games one bit. Deep Silver has not exactly impressed me so far either. This seems pretty lazy. At a msrp of $20 it becomes downright disgusting.

You'd be surprised, quite a few people think SR2 is the best SR game. Especially since GTAIV stepped away from the crazier early days of GTA.

Why is Shakespeare in hell?

It's a shame that it doesn't run very well. Digital Foundry looked at the PS4 version of Saints Row 4 the other day and it seems like that's kind of rough too, running with an unlocked framerate that's all over the place.

@justkamtoo: Ditto. I really liked 1 and 2. Third took me 4 attempts to wrap my head around that game and I just didn't care for the expansion...err 4.

This looks pretty terrible.

Press Y to jump to shore while in a fountain, the same "Hold Y to disable x" animation they recycled through SR4 like a hundred times, same powers, same blurry circa 2010 textures and 5 FUCKING HOURS TO COMPLETE THE GAME? Fuck this.

I've been kinda bummed about this from the announcement that it wasn't 3 & 4 remastered.

I just want to say that I never liked Kinzie. Never.

Also I kinda want to play this but man, the color scheme is seriously killing me. I hated the eternal night in SR4 and this is even worse.

You do know that this is a $20 game, right?

I'm okay with playing as Kinzie but I'm wondering if the boss/player character is featured in any cutscenes and such?

Because I lost my SR3 & 4 saves to the Steam "cloud save" feature so I'm wondering if I'll be losing out by not having any local saves from the other games.

Also are you able to play as the boss when you rescue the boss?

Really curious about this.

I'm pretty sure the boss isn't playable, but they can be imported and appear in cutscenes since they're a part of the story.

I feel like i've just seen everything in this game, if the content is all just "side missions" then i'm ok.

@simkas: You saying there's enough here for 20 bucks? I guess if you're into short obvious cash-ins then it's probably ok.

Also still having trouble running a game that looks this bad at a decent stable framerate on the new generation of gaming (tm) is fucking hilarious.

I for one had a ton of fun with SR4 and will deffo play this. Looks cool. Also good that they didn't regurgitate Steelport once again.

I don't like 99% of this (and Saints Row: The Third and 4 are some of my favorite games), but I have to admit, that chair weapon made me laugh every time it showed up.

I don't know, man. If SR5 is just a crazier SR4, I'm not sure if I'm down with that. They can't just keep ramping up the crazy for forever. I'm honestly not sure what I want out of this franchise anymore, I might just be done with it even though I really liked SR3 and 4.

This DLC just looks ugly to me, I absolutely hate the look of it.

i probably won't be playing a saints row game in which i can't play as female voice 1 saints boss, tho

@amyggen saints row x freespace. take the fight to the homeworld of whatever those aliens were called! with option to play as either a not-x-wing or a giant japan robot!

I donno if 5 hours is too little or too much for you, but, like Dan said, that was his time after doing tons of side stuff. The main story in SRIV would only take you like 2 or 3 hours if you only did story missions. This is obviously going to be smaller, since it's only 20 bucks. Don't know what people were expecting, but this is just about what I was.

I think he means that he'd rather play a GTA-style game (SR3), than a Crackdown-style game (SR4). At least, thats the way I feel about it... SR4 really didn't click for me at all.

I feel like the only reason this wasn't just sr4 dlc is so they could sell it in a box and jack up the price. 5 hours is damn short and 90% of the content seems to just be reskins of old stuff.

So eh I'll wait for a sale.

This is running on an Xbox One? I could have easily believed this was on a 360 judging by the performance

I don't know where they go from superpowers in the next game, but from watching this more of the same just isn't cutting it for me. Maybe I just don't like the setting?

Ideally they would implement the red faction destruction stuff so although you would be limited to normal weapons the impact from them would be far more impressive. I picture actually bringing down buildings and bridges and having them affect (for some period of time) the way you traverse the city.

I had a blast playing Saints Row 3. Saints Row 4 lost a lot to me when vehicles became useless. I liked modifying cars, or driving stupid hybrids of death. I enjoyed that Saints Row 3 was somewhat grounded in rules that fit its universe. Saints Row 3 felt like you were wrecking havoc on a living, breathing city. Saints Row 4 felt like you were doing it in some shitty simulacrum of Saints Row 3. Which, is what they were going for. But pulling out the life and colors from 3 also made the setting of 4 kinda crappy.

Another Saints Row in modern times would be rather boring. I like the formula of the Saints Row series; but the setting is tiring. A game as wacky as Saints Row but in a fantasy setting with swords and magic or in a sci-fi setting with laser swords and space magic would at least give the world a different look and feel.

I also wished they had stated up front which platform they were playing this on, as I refreshed the video and wondered if something was preventing it from playing in HD.

I was hoping Saints Row 5 would fulfill the promise of the end of Saints Row 4. The Saints becoming time traveling jackasses wrecking the past.

IMO if they go back to cars I won't be playing the sequel. I just can't go back to driving in open world games.

Yeah, doesn't seem like they did much with the game on current gen consoles. SR4 on a PC looks WAY much better, you just need to watch the latter part of the SR4 QL to see that. 60 fps and much better-looking in general.

@bakermikeromeo: There is no clear-cut definition to what it is, but here is a video that shows how the sign got started during one of their 2010 E3 after-hour shows. After the stream took place, "<>" slowly became a purposely meaningless and comedic gang sign to show comradery between us Giant Bomb duders.

You might often see "<>" appended by "GLHB"--Good Luck Have Batman.
