Quick Look: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege

Austin is called on to protect a lot of things from people who want those things. Now, if he could only find a suitable spot to park his gigantic gun...

Sit back and enjoy as the Giant Bomb team takes an unedited look at the latest video games.

Dec. 11 2015

Cast: Vinny, Alex, Austin

Posted by: Vinny

Episode Notes:

A quick correction: At one point, we talk about the lack of weapon upgrades or other progression systems. It turns out that you can buy attachments for weapons, it's just that they're deep in a set of menus you rarely return to and that system never gets a tutorial.

Rainbow Seige Six!

I though Two was the best, Three through Five just didn't iterate as you'd expect a AAA game would.

@melotraumatic: I'm with ya man. I'm really loving the game despite its flaws. It's the first game in years where randoms online actually use mics to communicate and coordinate attacks.

I've played about 15 hours of the game and have really tried to give it a chance, but you really, really need to communicate with others to have any fun, even minimal chat with strangers is better than absolutely no planning.

The downside of that is that other people playing games like this are the worst. The amount of homophobia, racism and sexism getting thrown about is absurdly high. I just can't do it anymore.

When the game is at its best it's magical. The flipside is some angry dude shouting in my ear "FUCKING MOVE YOU FUCKING TWAT!" (It turns out that moving would have gotten me killed) I know that the Tom Clancy games bring about a certain type of player, but people take it insanely seriously.

I've had incredible games, and the most intense 1V1 moments, but the bullshit is too much to deal with. You really need a couple of people to play with to get the most out of the game. It's a real shame.

@austin_walker there are actually weapon unlocks (like sights, suppressors, etc.), you have to go to the operator menu and then click on the operator who you want to go to and select loadout and then the weapon you want to buy stuff for.

But they don't tell you about that so I can understand why you would think there were no weapon unlocks

Was going to post this, they are really well hidden, but they are there. Maybe this should be in the video notes?

@gunstarred: bummer. I haven't experienced any of that on xbl. In fact, I've added about 5-10 new friends since the game came out and I very rarely add or play with people I don't know. My experience with random people has been pretty positive for the most part.maybe I've just been lucky.

@mems1224: I was playing on the Xbox too, and there have been super nice people, some people that have taught me stuff I didn't know, but that has most definitely been the exception. The worst players also tend to be from the UK.

I'd think they would be better off sending in Sam Fisher or, worse comes to worse, Gabe Logan.

Frankly, Battlefield Hardline had half these features, more destructibility(Granted not as granular in some cases) and giant maps along with a full features singleplayer and people shat on it.

Not sure why this gets a pass.

@phoenix87: except unlike battlefront they're adding all future maps for free and 8 new operators that you can purchase with in game money or real money. Also unlike battkefront, this game actually has depth and complexity

@jedo: I know people have a lot of nostalgia for Rainbow Six games but trying to say that firefights in the old games were anywhere close to realistic is pretty funny.

Also this has the most "tactical planning" you can have in a game that also involves 9 other people.

This should have been a side-game in Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer.

edit: man that chat. the glitch was hilarious though! all in all a funny QL. not my type of game but I agree that the reinforcing is visually and audibly satisfying.

Yeaaaaa this doesn't seem like the Rainbow Six game I want or what I was hoping they were doing with this new one. After that initial unveiling of the game, I was hoping this was going to be full on destructibility, to the extent of collapsing the entire structure, and then work around that. Missions to stop people from doing it, using it as a tool, drive a vehicle through a wall etc. Complete freedom to approach the situation as you wanted.

This seems quite limited and corny.

Also would've liked a bit more of the sim-y-ness of the older games. Slower, more tactical combat. Crazy weapon detail and options. Huge selection. Tons of ways to do things etc.

I pretty much only played these games for Terrorist Hunt mode. Had a lot of fun doing local and online co-op terrorist hunt in Raven Shield and Vegas.

I don't really agree with Alex's 'only one currency' thing in all cases. F2P games almost always have two currencies, one to pay for minor system interactions, one to pay for the premium crap. Credits vs. Platinum in Warframe, for example.

What annoys me more is when full price games like this also have that in the game in a way where stuff is flat-out locked behind paywalls. Something like Battlefront's credit system (though I don't think you can buy credits) is more palatable because it's just a general unlock currency.

Ahaha, did Austin get disconnected from a single player game right as he was saying 'sometimes this game can be really...fun'?

This game is a ton of fun. I think people are looking at it the wrong way a lot of the time because it's called Rainbow Six.

Many critics seem to not understand this is just like Counter-Strike.

If you do not like tactical, slow-pace, multiplayer shooters with skill ceilings then this is not for you.

The situations are just there to do 2 things, neither of which are supposed to be anything resembling a SP campaign:

a.) Tutorialize you on maps, functions, and operator specialist abilities

b.) Give you tons of free Renown to unlock operators

It has some technical issues which are looking to be addressed in a patch in the next week or so before Christmas vacations hit.

I really don't think people are differentiating between not liking a TYPE of game and it being a bad game. Most of the people I know playing it are CS:GO players and they're having a really good time. Honestly, if you're bagging the game regarding its content, CS GO has far less content that R6 Siege and it's pricetag matches.

It makes me sad that people are having an extreme amount of entitlement and malice towards this game that is the best one it's genre in a decade and has a great DLC policy.

dead in 6 months. content gating with f2p mechanics in a full priced game is absolutely ridiculous.

played about 10 hours in the beta, and oddly enough, just like battlefront, I feel I've seen everything the game has to offer.

I mean, the price model isn't all that different than what Overwatch is going to do. They're essentially just charging for the characters and the game comes with 20 operators.

Do you have the same problem with Call of Duty? This game gives you far more options to gain points for unlocks where you don't have to grind as much.

Man, this seems like such a bummer.

I'd heard all of these descriptions of what this game would be like. A fairly closed environment that would be malleable, allowing players to make their own approaches and come up with new strategies on the fly, providing for a constantly changing high-tempo game-play experience.

Nothing here recalls that analogy.

Seems to me they just dressed up a bunch of doors and hatches out of any other multiplayer shooter, have you use inventory items to actually open them.

There's a real great idea here, but boy, this ain't the game to execute on it.

Also, I know I've already made this point, but the thermite charge didn't open the window? The THERMITE CHARGE didn't open the window?! I'm unreasonably angry about this.

Everything I wanted from a game like this, SWAT 4 did ten years ago, other than graphics most of it better too. I was really hoping when I first heard about this that it would be a reasonable number of generic maps/buildings/scenarios that the game could then randomly populate with enemies and objectives (bombs, hostages, etc).

My dream hostage rescue type game would have a robust scenario generator, small enough maps that you could actually work in environment destruction and finally a decent dress up simulator equipment selection.

I'd like to pick this up at some point as someone who has enjoyed the Counter Strike games throughout the years but wouldn't mind a new spin on things which Siege seems to contain with its destructible walls/floors and variable roles. Once they resolve the network issues and patch the most common bugs I'll probably get on it - when it hits a sale. Now, the price doesn't bother me in terms of the seemingly endless value conversation but rather as a student I tend to not throw my money around too carelessly.

I think this game is better than any Call of Duty or Battlefield game, easily. The matches that I've played, especially the highest difficulty of Terrorist Hunt, are incredibly challenging.

Honestly, the fact that you can upgrade your operators seems completely intuitive.

Some of the best MP in a shooter I've played in AGES. I play with one or two friends and the rest randoms (sometimes all randoms), and by the end of the first round anyone who doesn't already have a mic in usually does at that point. Everyone I've matched with has been focused and ready to coordinate to win. It reminds me of the days when voice chat for online MP was in it's infancy, and you'd meet and talk to all sorts of people for 5-10 mins, and then get a new group. Nowadays everyone's usually in party chat and nobody is on voice chat, this is a nice change from that.
