Quick Look: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege

Austin is called on to protect a lot of things from people who want those things. Now, if he could only find a suitable spot to park his gigantic gun...

Sit back and enjoy as the Giant Bomb team takes an unedited look at the latest video games.

Dec. 11 2015

Cast: Vinny, Alex, Austin

Posted by: Vinny

Episode Notes:

A quick correction: At one point, we talk about the lack of weapon upgrades or other progression systems. It turns out that you can buy attachments for weapons, it's just that they're deep in a set of menus you rarely return to and that system never gets a tutorial.

@somejerk: SWAT 4 was fantastic. A remaster or a sequel needs to happen.

As someone who ended up with the PC version without realizing it from buying a graphics card, and ended up sinking like 20 hours into it over a week... It feels goddamn near perfect for what it is.

Yeah, I mean it. I'm not big on competitive shooters. I was never the fastest, or most accurate. I like Battlefield because just being a cog among 30 other players leaves room to mess around and not feel bad about not contributing. But the 5v5 multiplayer in Siege has more tactical depth than I've ever seen in anything, ever. The pace is more akin to a Counter-Strike of Call of Duty, but the amount of thinking, outthinking and overthinking the game space allows makes it feel like a true Rainbow Six game. The maps are the most intricate I've ever seen. Although small, everything has seemingly limitless ways of fortifying, for the defenders, and breaching for the attackers, which makes the multiplayer the most brain crunching thing I've ever put myself through.

Furthermore, something I don't think will ever come across in a video; Siege has the best sound I've ever heard in a game. Ever. It takes directional audio to a completely new level. You can be standing on the ground floor in a house, with enemies walking around on the floor above, and in the basement, and you can still isolate which set of noises is coming from where, and which staircase they're the closest to. And it seems like everything makes a noise, too. I'm convinced that even turning far enough for your character to have to move a foot makes a subtle rusting that you can pick out if you're hiding perfectly still on the other side of the door, and those audio clues are exactly what you need to make use of the insane levels of destruction and the complexities of the maps to make your decision on where and when to strike.

I'm writing a review all of a sudden I guess?

Anyway it's a fantastic game, and the PC version is, without a doubt, worth a 60 if you're into competitive, team based multiplayer. To me, this feels like the new Counter-Strike. This went where CS failed to go.

now I'm gonna actually watch the video

Edit: I hate to be that guy this time, but... Playing the PC version of a multiplayer shooter with a controller?

Edit: Aaa, the misinformation! The weapon progression isn't that hidden! You click on one of the characters you already bought, and then the top menu item says "loadout" and there you can see all of the alternate configurations and stuff you can buy...! Oh my gosh you're in the menu, help, I'm getting defensive over a video about a video game I casually enjoy!

Going by this video alone, it looks like maaaybe 2/3rds of something interesting? I dunno, like Alex was saying, the limited breach/infiltration spots seems annoying. Like it's just a matter of time until people learn the maps and a halfway decent team will defend every time. I guess it looks pretty polished for a $20-$30 game?

Edit: Oh, $60 game? Hah!

@bocckob: I wouldn't take this video as representative of the whole game, Austin doesn't really know what he's doing. Once you understand all the separate mechanics and characters specials the game becomes one of the most fun multiplayer shooters I've ever played

I was going to make a joke about the Thatcher operator disarming mines but Austin beat me to it.

Also if I remember correctly Rainbow Six is the code-name for the guy who was the leader of Team Rainbow.

The MP seems interesting, but I can't over the fact that Ubisoft a) chose to waste Angela Bassett's considerable acting talent to spit out the most generic video-game setup in the history of shooters ("We need to shoot the Bad Guys. Because we are the Good Guys. Any questions? NO QUESTIONS ALLOWED!") and

b)Ubisoft thinks that a glass window is an "Unbreachable Object"

Glass windows, everyone. The strongest substance on the face of the Earth.

There should be some kind of high volume correction in the quick looks. It seems that multiple times, from GBeast specifically, their volume spikes up terribly when they get excited.

Actually... I think it's only Austin's microphone.

Hold on a sec. Did he seriously casually drop "Giggin" ... for the name..while everyone looked on with wonder? Fascinating.

That sounds about right though. On the international counter-terrorism stage you have, if I'm not mistaken I think I read it somewhere: the Fibbies, the Sassers, the Gretl Schmitts Gruber 9 (the family dance troupe), Russian Spandex, and then pop group "Gigginit" from France.

You learn something everyday.

Hell of a lot of misinformation going around here, especially with the people making a big deal about the window not breaching.

The charge that was planted on it was a regular one, not a thermite charge, and the window was reinforced using Castle's barricade. The regular charge would have breached it normally, had Mute not placed a jammer next to the barricade, which rendered useless both the charge and Fuze's cluster grenade that gets planted after. This really highlights where the game shines - the synergy in using two or more operators together. As a counter to that situation, Austin, as Sledge, could have used his hammer to knock through Castle's barricade.

Honestly, if you're bagging the game regarding its content, CS GO has far less content that R6 Siege and it's pricetag matches.

I really like Siege and hope it does well but this statement is straight up false. CS GO has more content if you're just talking maps and weapons at a quarter of the price tag ($15 vs $60).

Beast crew points out that you need to open at least 3 def/atk operators to play. But its not really a must, the recruit is like a BLANK CANVAS/CUSTOM class, that also has breach charges/gadgets/grenades/drones and most of the rifles in the game to pick from. I play recruit from time to time and i have unlocked all the other operators.

Looks like a fun time if you can get the crew together for it. Worried that it won't have a community by next year though, especially if the game is full price all through the holidays. Unlikely I know, but people seem to be right about $40 or so being the sweet spot for it.

Im not really woried about community, the game has tons and tons of replayability. Unlike other shooters that lost their communities like titanfall, i have a feeling that people that already bought the game are going to play this for long long time, also there is 4 packs of free content coming out in 2016. Plus the game is going to be cheaper and cheaper and cheaper, and then a 25$ steam sale...

There's a real stark contrast of opinion between the people who have actually played this game and who haven't.

A lot of miss information and straight up ignorance being thrown around which is a real shame.

I can see what this game was trying to achieve, but this being a ubisoft venture fails to reach its lofty goals as is par for the course. The arbitrary restrictions as to what can be blown up is ridiculous. I'd like to see what a developer like DICE would do with this. Interesting concept though I'd pay $25 for this at most.

Also those glitches were awesome.

I guess red faction guerrilla or bad company 2 are the pinacle of world destruction (so far). I can see how this can be really engrossing but the arbitrary destructible environs, especially in a geame like this, really puts me off. Plus im bad at coordinating with others and will probably get yelled at for sucking/not playing my fucking class.

As someone who loved Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield, the lack of a single-player campaign in this game is really disappointing. Rainbow Six for me was always about planning your attack and making strategic decisions about how you need to move your various Rainbow teams to take objectives. Reducing it to a multiplayer game means that kind of strategy is lost, as well as any overarching plot.

I'm sure this would be fun with friends, but that's it, nothing more. Also, no "Tango down" when you kill terrorists? This ain't no Rainbow Six.

I like the single player and co-op aspects of this, taking my time and doing it right is what i like about playing tactical shooters, if they could expand the missions using these mechanics i might enjoy this game, but the focus on the multiplayer with its brutally short time to kill and long periods where you arn't doing anything kills it for me.
I wish SWAT 4 was updated and available for modern PC's.

@baronsamedi: I have the game (got it as a gift) - it's got a solid core, but I agree with the criticisms highlighted by many - this does not feel like a $60 game. In terms of content it has as much as CS:GO did for double the RRP. All the micro transaction stuff is pretty gross (why 2 currencies?), and the fact that unique operators have to be unlocked can lead to balance issues. Not to mention there's quite a few issues with the hit-detection and getting stuck in places.

With that being said, once the price goes down, I think it's worth picking up and I hope there's a solid player base for it.

Wait, are we supposed to now be comparing FBI to Spetznaz?

spetznaz is a descriptive term, and not actually a military or police unit like, the SAS, FBI and GIGN. It loosely translates to special purpose unit, so using it the way this game does makes no sense at all. But i suppose its not actually wrong either... i wonder which spetznaz group they mean? The prison spetznaz, or the border patrol spetznaz maybe?

I do think people are being very unfair to this game. I Think its great and dont see any problems with the micro transactions or anything. Im not even sure what you would buy and why ?
So many videos and reviews and stuff where the people playing it have no idea what they are doing.
I dont see how the weapon customization is deep in a set of menus that you rarely return to ? im always changing my loadout like i would do on just about any other multiplayer fps.
