Quick Look: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege

Austin is called on to protect a lot of things from people who want those things. Now, if he could only find a suitable spot to park his gigantic gun...

Sit back and enjoy as the Giant Bomb team takes an unedited look at the latest video games.

Dec. 11 2015

Cast: Vinny, Alex, Austin

Posted by: Vinny

Episode Notes:

A quick correction: At one point, we talk about the lack of weapon upgrades or other progression systems. It turns out that you can buy attachments for weapons, it's just that they're deep in a set of menus you rarely return to and that system never gets a tutorial.

@ript: Because they haven't tutorialized it, at least not through the first four "situations," nor through any UI queues that would draw my attention to the operator screen beyond just purchasing new operators.

If you like co-op Terrorist Hunt but don't want to drop $60 on Siege, get Insurgency. It is one of the best PC shooters I have ever played, has full Steam Workshop mod support, and a hell of an active community. The adversarial multiplayer is very good, too. It regularly goes on sale for $5 or less on Steam, and it shows up in bundles as well.

No microtransactions, either.

Looks like it could be fun if you can get some genuine cooperation going. CS still seems like a better time.

Ehh, but the destruction stuff could make for some great tension and spectacular rushes, even if it has its own arbitrary set of rules. Calling it Rainbow Six sure makes me wish for more involved planning and campaign.

Also, something about the whole "kill that dude" thing makes me really want to play a new SWAT game where you don't just shoot people dead.

I don't know if anyone else has said it already, but as far as I know the 'Six' in Rainbow Six is a common military designation for the leader of a unit? I haven't ever read a Tom Clancy book, but I'm pretty sure the titular 'Rainbow Six' was actually the general who oversaw the whole of Rainbow Team and not an operative himself.

In this case that might make Angela Bassett the 'Rainbow Six', but I doubt that was really considered too deeply in the development of this game.

@baronsamedi: It's definitely a team-based tactical game which rewards good communication, but there are some significant issues with hit-detection and random bugs that haven't been addressed from the demo builds (clipping and sticking to walls as an example). Or it's UX being not the easiest to navigate. If they flesh those issues out, I think it can be a truly fun title. Also...why no offline LAN?

I do think people are being very unfair to this game. I Think its great and dont see any problems with the micro transactions or anything. Im not even sure what you would buy and why ?

So many videos and reviews and stuff where the people playing it have no idea what they are doing.

I dont see how the weapon customization is deep in a set of menus that you rarely return to ? im always changing my loadout like i would do on just about any other multiplayer fps.

It's light feature-set for it's full price is what's been called out - had it been priced more along the lines of it's peers CS:GO or Insurgency, I think a lot of those issues could be forgiven, but for $60 with not much outside of it's main online mode and then adding in not one, but two currencies to extract more money out of the player makes for a poor value proposition - no matter how good the actual game could be.

I'll never understand weapon 'skins'. Also its slightly depressing to me how often on the final kill cam, they are just holding down the fire button well after the enemy is dead. You can just feel the teen rage.

Has nothing to do with teen rage. Its just fun to do.

Just to clarify (re: the conversation at 17:36, the "6" in Rainbow 6 isn't doesn't have anything to do with the amount of nations/continents or anything like that, but rather John Clark (the main character of the book) is the "Rainbow Six" or the director of the Rainbow organization. The Deputy Director is Rainbow Five. So the number is a sort of ranking designation.

That's cool! Thanks for sharing!

@dezztroy: they should probably call it fsb alpha group. It's one of those things that probably don't seem weird to people not in the know, but it would be akin to naming the groups sas, gign, gsg9 and the army(refering to an american door kicker unit).

This game is a ton of fun. I think people are looking at it the wrong way a lot of the time because it's called Rainbow Six.

Many critics seem to not understand this is just like Counter-Strike.

If you do not like tactical, slow-pace, multiplayer shooters with skill ceilings then this is not for you.

The situations are just there to do 2 things, neither of which are supposed to be anything resembling a SP campaign:

a.) Tutorialize you on maps, functions, and operator specialist abilities

b.) Give you tons of free Renown to unlock operators

It has some technical issues which are looking to be addressed in a patch in the next week or so before Christmas vacations hit.

I really don't think people are differentiating between not liking a TYPE of game and it being a bad game. Most of the people I know playing it are CS:GO players and they're having a really good time. Honestly, if you're bagging the game regarding its content, CS GO has far less content that R6 Siege and it's pricetag matches.

It makes me sad that people are having an extreme amount of entitlement and malice towards this game that is the best one it's genre in a decade and has a great DLC policy.

I fully and totally agree with this. If you think this game is for you than it's for you. Ignore all the haters, this game has some great qualitys if you know where to look.
